FIVE YEARS LATER
“Mummy, I'm ready for school!”
Brielle stared at her son, Zane and shivered. How could two people be so identical?
Five years had gone by since she had fled town after eavesdropping on that very disturbing conversation between Nikolai and his crazy wife. Even though she wanted nothing more than to forget Nikolai existed, her son kept reminding her of him everyday.
The resemblance between the two was overwhelming for her most times because all she wanted to do was forget and yet she had a tiny living breathing reminder of him living in her home and breathing the same air as her everyday.
If only she didn't adore the little urchin so much….
“Mummy! I'm going to be late, again,”
She narrowed her eyes at his tone and crossed her hands. “Zane Allan Adams, what's that tone?”
The little boy's eyes grew wide and he shook his head. “Nothing mummy, I was just asking you politely if we could get going.”
She giggled softly and shook her head. He was a handful majority of the time but he was also the most important thing in her life.
“All set?” She heard from behind her and turned. A smile graced her lips as she saw the woman standing there. “Well?”
“Aunt Rebecca, Zane was just telling me he doesn't want to be late,” she added air quotes and the other woman chuckled.
Brielle sighed and let out a laugh. If her aunt hadn't taken her in all those years ago, she probably would have been living differently e.g, her child would have been ripped out of her hands at birth and she'd have been dealing with massive PTSD.
“Mummy?”
“Sorry baby, let's go.”
She stopped in front of her aunt and leaned closer to kiss her. “I love you,”
“I love you too baby girl. Now off you both go.” Rebecca whispered, back and Brielle guided her son to the door. “Be a good boy.”
“Always Grandma,”
Brielle smiled at the interaction between the two as she closed the door behind her and her son. “Today is going to be a good day.”
Just another Nikolai free day. She added in her head as she started the engine and pulled out of the parking lot.
Few hours later, she was pulling into the parking lot of her new college. Zane's school was only a thirty minutes drive away which made it easier to drive him off and get to class in record time. It also made picking him up easy. Keeping an eye on him, which was her top priority, was a piece of cake.
She got out of her car and locked it before making her way to her faculty where she had a lecture in less than five minutes.
Just as she got to the entrance of the faculty, she frowned as she saw a ton of people gathered at the noticeboard stationed in front.
Her frown deepened as she reached them and a sense of dread rose up in her.
“Did you hear?” One girl nudged her as she got close enough and she shook her head.
“What's going on? What is all the excitement about?”
“We have a new Dean and I hear he's the hottest thing to ever work the face of the earth,”
Brielle swallowed and shook her head. This felt like déjà vu reminding her of the day she had seen Nikolai again after their night together.
The setting was a bit different but the excitement had been the same if not more. Girls fawning over another human they thought was hotter than coals.
“See you in class.”
She spun around and watched her informat walk off with a group of girls who were chatting excitedly.
“Today is going to be a good day,” she changed as she joined them, heading to her class that she was now running late for.
****
“Why hasn't he shown up yet?”
Brielle pinched the tip of her nose wishing she could stab her eye so she didn't have to listen to their whining.
Apparently hottie pants had been a no-show and the entire female population was unhappy.
She grinned as she declined in her seat. Perhaps she didn't have to worry about anything after all.
Even if the new dean showed up, he'd be a different person whose name probably started with another alphabet save for N.
“Class isn't holding,” a student announced and Brielle sighed in relief.
More free time to herself. She looked down at her watch and grinned. Zane would be closing in a few hours and she could go wait for him so they could grab some ice-cream.
Pleased with her plans, she walked out of class and made her way to the parking lot whistling and humming a happy tune.
“Watch where you're going,” she heard someone say before she crashed into a hard body, sending her to the ground on her butt.
“Owww,” she moaned in pain, rubbing her elbows where bruises were starting to form.
“Let me see that,”
She froze at the sound of his voice and whipped her head around. “It can't be,”
“Brielle?”
How was it even possible? Why was fate doing this to her?
“Do you know how long I have been searching for you? You just disappeared.” He continued speaking as he helped her off the ground.
Brielle slapped his hand away and glared at him. “Don't touch me!”
Nikolai frowned as she examined her face. “You're unhappy to see me. Did I do something wrong? If I remember correctly you left my house without saying goodbye and then just disappeared. Even your friend didn't know where you were.”
Her heart sank at the mention of Jessica so she hadn't seen or even spoken to in five years. She had left it all behind, including her.
“Why did you run off like that? I thought we had a connection.”
She snorted and staggered to her feet, wincing at the pain in her knees.
“Be careful. You need to get that checked and cleaned.” He whsiepred and she rolled her eyes.
“There's no need to pretend to be concerned about me, cut the drama.”
“I don't understand why you're acting like this. Did I do something wrong? The last thing I remember was leaving you to attend to some urgent matter in the house and by the time I came back you had gone.”
She rubbed her arms as a chill spread across her entire body and shook her head. “I just needed to leave,”
“Without a good explanation?”
She shrugged. “I had my reasons.” she pointed at him. “You shouldn't be here. I was doing so well. Why are you here?”
“I came looking for you and now that I've found you, I'm not letting you go.”
Brielle fumed and slapped himself across the face. “Stay away from me!” She shrieked and ran off.
She got into her car and drove off hurriedly, her entire body shaking.
