CHAPTER 1
"I denounce whatsoever bond that I ever shared with it."
The words hit me like ice water. His tone was cold and final. Like he was speaking about a stray dog.
An it.
I was an it now.
The blood moon hung above me. Huge, red, and its wicked light just stared at my suffering. Like the Moon Goddess herself was watching and laughing.
Wind tore at my dress as I tried to understand how it came to this. Three years. Three years of "you're mine, Elianna" whispered against my neck.
Behind me, thousands of wolves were laughing and pointing.
Hateful comments poured in, louder than the wind.
"She actually thought he'll accept her"
"She was just a mere distraction"
"Stupid piece of trash"
"Omegas should know their place. Know your worth, girl."
"Leora is better for him. Not some gutter rat"
And in front of me stood the man who promised me forever.
His eyes flicked over me once. Gold and empty like I was already gone. Like I never mattered.
He had just chosen Leora. The only friend I thought I had. The girl I used to share secrets with under blankets. And now he was denouncing me like some piece of used tissue.
My chest ached. It hurt to even breathe. They were all looking at me, waiting for tears, for begging. And when my eyes finally met with Derek's gold eyes.
I didn't know when I whispered,
"Why?"
My voice cracked. I was broken, torn and everything but okay.
He avoided my gaze. He just stared at the ground, at her hand on his arm. Anywhere but me.
Was this really the same man that told me he didn't care about status?
That promised me how tonight would change everything?
That swore "after I'm Alpha, you're my Luna whether they like it or not"?
Something in me snapped. Not with a scream. With silence.
I ran. No destination in mind. I just ran. Past the torches, past the cruel laughter, deep into the woods where the trees were black and the red moon couldn't follow.
When I reached a cliff, I stopped. My knees suddenly went weak and the tears I held back all came rushing. The cold breeze slapped my face but I felt nothing. Nothing could hurt more than this.
A voice I didn't even recognize as mine tore through me. A sob, it was broken, not like anything I thought I had.
And in that moment as I stood up, walked a few steps, I fell.
Not because I didn't look where I was going but because I didn't care anymore.
Because maybe the quiet was better than this noise.
Death seemed like a better place.
There would be peaceful. No Derek, no Leora and no pack.
Last thing I remembered was a loud screech. Not a wolf, not human either. Something old. And then.... white light that burned through my eyes.
___
I woke up with a banging headache and the same loud screech from last night echoing in my head. Almost as if it was stuck in my skull.
Did I say last night?
How did I survive? I fell off a cliff. I should be in pieces.
I was still thinking when I noticed where I was.
Soft sheets and gold curtains. The smell of roses and money and things I didn't own.
"This isn't mine" I said, picking at the bed sheets. My voice sounded wrong. It was too soft, too small.
A knock sounded, sharp and impatient, diverting my attention towards it.
Then Leora emerged, perfect and untouched.
Instinct took over and I was about to scream at her, to claw her eyes out, but something held me back. Something I didn't even understand. Fear? Or something worse?
"Lia, father wants to see you." her voice was dead. Flat like she was talking to a servant.
Without waiting for a response, she left me. Alone, confused and furious.
I walked to the mirror on shaky legs. My legs didn't feel like mine.
"Lia? Why would she call me that..."
The sight frightened the words out of me.
The person staring back at me was a total stranger.
Green eyes not my brown eyes.
Sharper jaw. Paler skin.
Silver hair, but not my silver, this was longer.
Lia Voss? Leora's twin. The spare daughter.
How?
Wait.
I was reborn.
