THIRTY-TWO
“What happened?” Monty asked. “What happened to Charlie?”
James had run back to his place for his car. He picked Monty up in front of the diner just as the ambulance was pulling out of Second Breakfast’s parking lot. The flashing lights came on, and then the siren wailed. “I don’t know, little buddy. I’m not sure.”
“Is she okay? Is she going to be okay?”
The trauma of having seen Charlie faint bothered Monty. It impacted James as well. It was the second time in two days he had seen her pass out. His mind played back their conversation at the hospital. He’d specifically asked her what the doctors had said. She said it was because she had been hungover and dehydrated. No. She hadn’t said that. He had. She just hadn’t corrected him.
She had been keeping something from him.
