The Fated Touch
Sera's POV
The cold stone floor pressed against my cheek, chilling me to the bone, but the physical discomfort was nothing compared to the dull, throbbing pain radiating from two distinct spots on my body. The side of my neck burned where someone had injected me with a heavy sedative, and my left eye throbbed mercilessly from the blow Lucian had dealt me right before I was taken.
If I had to guess, my captors were the rebels—the infamous rogues who had been plaguing my husband’s borders.
Maybe my time has finally come, I thought, closing my eyes and letting out a slow, trembling breath.
An unexpected wave of calm relief washed over me. I embraced the idea of death. Whatever they planned to do to me in this dark, damp pit, it had to be better than going back to Lucian. Anything was better than another night in his bed, another night of him leeching the life out of me.
Heavy, booming footsteps echoed down the stone corridor, shattering the quiet.
"Luna Seraphina."
A deep, commanding voice called out, but I didn't answer. I didn't even flinch.
Keys rattled loudly against iron, and the heavy cell door creaked open. Strong hands reached down, hauling me roughly off the floor.
"Come on," the man grunted.
As he pulled me into the dim torchlight, I caught sight of the polished metal badge pinned over his heart—the Beta mark of the Crimson Ridge pack. I had been right.
He and another rogue dragged me across the damp room and shoved me into a wooden chair set in the center of the space. They quickly wound thick ropes around my wrists and torso, binding me tightly—enough to restrain a full-grown shifter if I tried to turn.
A bitter, hollow laugh bubbled inside my chest, though I kept it hidden behind my teeth. They know so little, I thought darkly. I wish my wolf would come out. I missed her terribly. I missed her strength, her voice, her presence. But she had been driven into deep hiding over a year ago, smothered by Lucian's cruelty.
The Beta stepped directly into my line of sight. I stared back, my expression completely blank. I showed no emotion because I simply had none left to give. I was an empty shell.
I noticed his eyes flicker down to the dark, swollen bruise around my eye. A flash of confusion crossed his features, questioning why the Luna of a powerful pack wasn't healing a simple physical blow.
I held my chin high as he began barking questions at me about Lucian's troop movements, his supply lines, and his war plans. I didn't know the answers, so I kept my mouth shut.
Frustrated by my silence, the Beta stepped into my personal space and grabbed my face, forcing me to look at him. Even his harsh grip, born out of interrogation, was somehow gentler than my own husband’s touch.
"Tell me!" he demanded.
I swallowed hard, forcing my voice past my parched throat. "Why would I know?"
He let go of my jaw, stepping back with an irritated huff. "We see the two of you together in public. You're his Luna. I'm sure you're working this together."
A dry, silent huff of laughter escaped my nose. Oh, yes, I thought bitterly. In public, he was the picture-perfect husband and 'mate.' I couldn't blame the rebels for being fooled. Lucian was a master at playing the devoted ruler when the world was watching.
Suddenly, the heavy iron door at the end of the hall swung wide open.
I didn't bother turning my head, but the sudden shift in the room's atmosphere was impossible to ignore. Dense, suffocating Alpha power flooded the corridor, rolling over the stone floor like a heavy fog.
The Rogue Alpha had arrived.
Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed against the damp walls, slowing to a complete stop just inside the threshold. The room fell into a suffocating silence. He didn't move right away. For a long, agonizing beat, he simply stood there. A sharp, dangerous tension filled the air, thick enough to choke on.
Then, a blur of motion cut through the room. A deafening roar echoed off the stone as the Alpha launched forward, slamming the Beta violently against the wall with enough force to crack the masonry, his massive hand crushed around the officer's throat.
"Did you hit her?!" the Alpha growled, his voice vibrating with absolute, savage rage.
My head snapped up in genuine shock. Is he talking about me?
The Beta stammered, his face turning pale as he clawed helplessly at the Alpha's iron grip. "N-No, Alpha! I swear!"
The Alpha released him, letting the Beta drop to the floor in a gasping, coughing heap before turning his lethal gaze back to his men. "Who struck her?"
"Alpha," the Beta wheezed, rubbing his neck frantically. "Dean said... Dean said she came in like that. The mark was already there when we nabbed her."
The Alpha's jaw clenched, his broad chest heaving under his leather tactical vest. "Bring him in here. Now!"
One of the guards scrambled out of the cell to find the scout.
Left in the sudden quiet of the room, the Rogue Alpha slowly turned his body toward me. For the very first time, I actually looked at him. I was able to put a face to the name. Gideon.
The breath caught in my throat. He was the most fiercely handsome man I had ever seen—broad-shouldered, battle-scarred, with sharp, regal features and dark, intense eyes that burned right through the gloom.
Suddenly, a strange, electric flutter ignited deep within my chest. My heart gave a hard, unfamiliar thump.
Is that... my wolf? I reached out to the quiet, dusty corners of my mind, desperately calling for her. Vera?
No answer came. My mind remained silent.
The Alpha glided forward, dropping to his knees directly in front of my wooden chair. He reached out with terrifying slowness, his massive, warm fingers gently cradling my bruised face. His touch was so light, so achingly careful, as if he were afraid I might shatter into pieces.
He tilted my head up, his dark eyes searching mine with a raw, agonizing intensity.
"Who did this to you, mate?" he whispered.
My mind went completely blank. Mate?
I stared deep into his eyes, and a wave of absolute, unadulterated calm washed over my frayed nervous system. The terror that had gripped me simply evaporated. The proximity allowed his scent to reach my nose—rich, warm sandalwood wrapped in sweet, golden amber.
For the first time in an entire year, Vera spoke. Her voice was faint, barely a whisper, but unmistakable as it echoed clearly through my mind.
Mate... she purred, her long-dormant presence reaching out toward the warmth of his hand.
My lips parted, and a soft, helpless gasp escaped my chest.
His eyes darkened, his thumbs gently sweeping over my cheekbones as his voice dropped into an agonizing, desperate demand. "Who?"
"My husband," I whispered.
