" He rejected you even before he knew of your existence, but don't worry baby; mummy will protect you. I will be a good mother to you. " I said in between painful sobs as I caressed my belly, passing some warmth to my baby.
The journey was long and lonely. I felt tired and famished, but that was nothing compared to the pain in my heart. The pain of rejection and betrayal. The pain of separation from the only people who cared about me, the only place I ever called home, and the fear of uncertainty.
My body was heavy, and my mind was foggy. I felt like I had been walking for ages, yet I was disappointed to notice where I was. I was only a few meters from my former pack's border. I had just crossed the first outer gate, venturing into the unclaimed land, where danger loomed in the shadows of the seemingly peaceful and quiet forest.
Darkness was beginning to creep in, and fear was effortlessly seeping inside my bones. My heart was beating erratically with every tiny step I took. Asher was right. He hated me, and no one else would convince me otherwise. Why would he banish and chase me from the pack in the evening while knowing that I was nyctophobic? Who in the whole pack didn't know how scared I was of the darkness? I would get anxiety attacks in the darkness. Isn't my nyctophobia the main reason why they thought I was weak and useless? Which Alpha would accept a Luna who was even scared of the least harmful things like darkness? Well, I had my heartless father to thank for that. He used to lock me up in a tiny creepy, dark room when I was young. I must have been a blind fool to think that Asher genuinely loved me with all those shortcomings.
' We will be okay!' My wolf, Anya, spoke sadly, and I nearly wetted my pants from the scare. I mean, she had been quiet all along, only to speak when I least expected it. who wouldn't be scared?
'How will you protect our pup if you are so weak?'Anya mocked, and I stood, frozen. Although she sounded mean, she was stating a fact. If I needed to protect my pup, I would have to toughen up.
'Don't mock me, Anya. Without my wolf, I was among the most powerful warriors in our former pack. I was their third lead warrior, remember? Third, just because I couldn't shift! I will defend my pup with my last breath. 'I spoke confidently, taking steady steps forward.
As I walked deeper and deeper into the forest, my fear intensified as the darkness thickened. The walk was rough and gruesome. My mother's worried face reappeared in my mind, reminding me of how ruthlessly Asher had denied me the only chance that I had to experience what true and unfiltered mother's love felt like.
With a heavy heart, I walked relentlessly, with no destination in mind. Every minute that I spent in the dangerous forest was like walking towards the lion's den. Even as a powerful worrier, there was a limited number of rogues that I could take at a time without my wolf. And I was literary walking into their territory, and if my pup and I would come out safely, that was uncertain, and yet, I was determined. With or without a miracle, I was going to fight, and I was going to protect my pup.
As a banished wolf, chances of being taken in by another pack were down to zero and my only hope was to walk into a human territory and even in there, I would have to live in fear, afraid of coming in contact with any werewolf, rogue or pack's. Banished werewolves were like cursed beings, and you could easily identify them with their stinky smell, which would elicit killing instincts from any shifter, and yet, that was me. That was my current life. Never in my entire life had I ever thought that I would one day become a banished rogue, and yet, here I was.
My legs were bleeding and sore from being pricked by thorns and from kicking rocks and trees, but I was grateful that my journey was going on smoothly. Little did I know that I was celebrating too early, and the real nightmare was just about to creep in.
I felt some rustling movement on my right, and when I turned, I saw nothing. Since I could not shift yet, my eyesight was not as enhanced as the normal werewolves, and I was frustrated to see nothing, but seeing nothing was good news, right? well, that was not until I felt the same movement on my left and once again, I saw nothing then, the amount of fear that I was experiencing was enough to give me an anxiety attack but my desire to survive was far much bigger and I forced my unwilling legs and my uncooperating body, hoping to stumble upon some light.
After walking a few meters, the same movements repeated itself, but this time, it was much louder and nearer. As if that was not enough, I felt the movement on my right, left, back, and front.
Although I could not see anything, my gut feelings were right, and it didn't take long before I was surrounded by a large number of shadows.
'They are rogues!' My wolf, Anya's furious voice shot at the back of my mind, but I ignored her. Since we were already surrounded, complaining was not going to help, and I had to fight my way out.
" Wow! Wow! See what we have here?" One of them shouted happily as he approached, and I cringed, feeling their greedy stare all over my body.
By then, my eyes had adjusted to the darkness, and I could make out their features. I was surprised to see a large number of rogues, which was weird since rogues, unlike the pack werewolves, have violent predispositions and can never stay in large numbers or be under united leadership.
No matter how confident I was, the chance of winning against such a large number was reduced to nothing, but I was not going to give up without a fight. I never backed out from a challenge, and I was not about to do it then. I might have been afraid of darkness, but I was never a coward. I would face challenges head-on.
" We don't get to see stinky rogues every day. We might as well feast on this one. " The one who seemed like the leader spoke, summoning the rest closer to me.
" I will go in first. But don't worry. You will all get to enjoy her. " The leader added, and the rest laughed in anticipation, adding to my fury and hatred
" Be good. Relax and enjoy this mighty one's touch. " He shouted as he extended his claws to me, and to his surprise, I lifted my leg, kicking the area between his neck and shoulders, snapping him out of life in minutes, a trick I had long practised since I could not shift.
Fury was written on their faces when they saw their leader's lifeless body thrown to the ground, and they all charged towards me, ready to take my life.
" Who dares to cause havoc in my territory?" A loud and scary voice thundered in the background, and I involuntarily shivered......
