Just after midday on the fifth day since leaving Bridgetown, The Woodland Rover slid quietly past the guardhouse opposite the end of The Way Through in mid-afternoon, without any particular notice from the two guards on duty. Although it had been used as staging platform for Arquin’s troops to cross the river into Carrador, usually it was a small outpost just keeping an eye on travellers crossing into Kimora from The Way Through. It was not the border guards’ job to police rivercraft, although Sheldrake was sure they would report on anything they considered out of the ordinary.
