22 For the next half hour, Sasha and Jayhan had a lovely time leaning precariously out over the rocks, shrieking in mock terror as they nearly fell in, and splashing each other, intentionally and unintentionally, as they took turns in swooshing the little butterfly net through the water. Eventually, due more to luck than skill, they proudly presented a jar with eight little tadpoles swimming around in it for Sheldrake and Yarrow’s admiration. The two adults duly exclaimed and inspected the tadpoles while the children beamed at their achievement. But their eyes, which initially shone with excitement, gradually lost their sparkle as Sheldrake gave them a comprehensive discourse on the life cycle of frogs.
