Chapter one
Hannah’s POV I pulled my red scarf tighter around my neck and smiled at mom  “I’m off to the coffee shop.” She pushed some of her red hair out of her face and smiled. “Get me a cup of green latte.” I nodded and grabbed my keys then walked out. My blue convertible sat half covered in snow like a half paint job. I got in and cleared the windscreen before pulling out the curb. ‘Holden’s’ coffee shop was a ten minutes drive from my house and slightly packed because of the cold weather. I parked my car and walked in. The bell above the door jingled and I took a deep breadth. It smelt like coffee beans and pastry. The perfect combination of the both that warmed my insides. I quickly joined the line, there were four people ahead of me and people kept smiling and calling out greetings to each Other. Mrs Glare a sweet old woman grinned at me. “If it isn’t Hannah Red-tails.”  I grinned at the nickname. “Hi Mrs Glare, you here to visit?” She nodded. “Yup. Genna insisted on me spending Christmas here and I couldn’t refuse, I mean look at the festive spirit here, it’s enough to make the Grinch love Christmas.” Genna was her grown daughter and Mother of my best friend . I laughed “Very true.” She moved away. “I’ll see you later on. Enjoy your day honey.” I waved till she was out of the shop then turned around. The line was already down to me and the barrister was raising a brow at me. I moved forward with a huge smile. “Good morning. Sorry about that.” Lucas rolled his eyes. “Always formal Hannah.” I grinned and rolled my eyes. “It’s called apologizing Luke, get me the usual and mom’s” He winced as he set to work making the drink. “Busy day?” I nodded. “Yup.” We both knew that my mom only drank coffee when she was pretty stressed. We owned a baking business called ‘Flour Heaven’ and were pretty popular. During the Christmas season the orders tended to be more, with Christmas orders and such. Mom was pretty stressed out and so was I. Lucas held out to cups of our orders. “Two pippin hot cups of the best chocolate and latte here on earth ready to go.” I grinned and grabbed them, they warmed my hands through my mittens. “Thank you.” “Welcome.” He pushed his chocolate hair out of his green twinkling eyes. “So..... I was wondering if you’ve gotten a date to the Christmas dance.” Every year we had this huge Christmas party at the town hall and we wore old ball gowns and pretended to still be in the Victorian age.  I shook my head. “Nope. I think I’m gonna skip on this one. Mom and I still have a lot to do, cakes to bake and deliver. I’d probably be too dead tired to attend.” He seemed disappointed. “Oh... um, okay. That sucks.” I nodded. “Yup. Do you?” He shook his head with a lopsided smile. “Nope. Seems like I’ll go with my two hot besties.” I grinned. “Thank you very much and perhaps we could. I’ll go now, see you around??” He nodded with a crooked smile. “That’s for sure.” Once out the shop I walked to my car super fast and got in. The heating made me feel better instantly and I grinned and started the drive home. I parked my car in front of the house and got out in surprise. The house opposite mine that I was starting to believe was hunted was being packed into. A moving truck was right in front and men were moving things in and out of the house.  I ran into my house and straight to the attached bakery at the back. Mom jumped when I barged in. “People are moving into the forgotten house!!” Mom sighed and tucked a red curl behind her ear. “Geez is that why you barged in like that?!” I winced. “Sorry.” She waved it aside. “I know. I was shocked too. They showed up some minutes after you left to get our drinks. It’s probably big city people her to rent it for the holidays. You’ll have to go give them a pie or cake or something. Not only is that good neighborliness, but they’ll hopefully order from us before they leave and spread the word to the big city.” I nodded. “That sounds good. I’ll go change then get back here and join you.” I handed her her coffee cup. She smiled in gratitude and waved me away. “Go get some rest or something. People are still ordering. We’ll start the real baking next week.” I nodded and walked to my room. I threw off my coats, mittens and boots then fell onto my fluffy bed. After laying there for a while I grabbed my phone and called Fayth. She answered on the second ring. “Sorry, was helping grandma settle in. She got coffee and said she saw you there?!” I nodded even if she couldn’t see me. “Yup. I got coffee for Me and mom.” “Oh.... that bad??” “Yup. People have been calling to book cakes and she’s been really busy. I’m helping her with the baking though.” I could basically sense her nod. “Yup. Of course you would, gosh you’re the most helpful daughter I have ever met. Good girl best friend check.” I laughed. “Don’t worry. Mom might give me breaks and such so we’ll have time to hang out. You can hang with me while I bake too.” “Yeah that’ll work.” I readjusted myself on the bed. “Hey, you remember that house opposite mine?” Her Voice perked up. “You mean the one we always thought was hunted because it’s been empty so long? Wait, don’t tell me you finally saw the ghost?!” I rolled my eyes with a smile. “Nope, but some guys are moving in. Mom said they’re probably only staying for the season but it looks like they’re moving in to stay, besides if they were staying only shortly they could’ve booked a hotel with little bags or something right?” “Yeah totally. Omg...... this changes everything. No more hiding out there I guess.” I nodded. “Yup. I wonder who they are? Maybe they have kids our age.” I could tell she was grinning from her tone. “A hot son perhaps??” I rolled my eyes. “I hope not. It’d be so weird.” “Weird? More like amazing!!! I’d give anything to have a hot neighbor.” “I’d give anything to not.” Just then, my golden retriever woke up from her little nap and scrampered up the bed. “Hey Lily just woke up, I’m gonna take her for a walk.” “Ok, I’ll go talk to gramma. I’m sure she has a lot to tell me about Las Vegas and her wild life there. Bye.” “Bye.” I dropped the phone right before Lily jumped on me and started covering my face in her adorably disgusting dog sliver. “Hey girl, how was your nap??” She woofed and kept giving me big kisses. I laughed and got up. “Let’s go to the park.” Her tail started wagging wildly and she ran to a corner and grabbed her dog leash. I put on her coat and mittens all over again and picked Lily up before pounding down the steps. “Mom, I’m walking Lily to the park.” “Okay. Be back soon okay?” “Yeah.” I attached the leash and set off with Lily. She happily led the way, stopping occasionally to sniff at a bit of snow. My cheeks were already flush from the cold but I didn’t mind. We had just reached the fourth block when a loud sound came around the end. A red and black motorcycle sped down the road. At the sight, I let go of the leash by accident and regretted it. Somehow, Lily had gotten to the middle of the road and was sniffing the ground. I froze in complete fear and it seemed like time had stilled.  The motorcycle got closer and closer to the unknowing Lily. I finally snapped out of my shock and started running to her. “Lily!!” She raised her head to gawk at me, probably because I looked crazy. I scooped her up and held her to my chest just as the motorcycle guy finally noticed the dog and girl on the road and swerved away.  At that moment, I honestly felt that I was gonna die. I squeezed me eyes close and waited for the impact.  However, all I felt was air as the Motorcycle sharply missed us and ended up capsized in the snow.  I stood in post traumatic shock as the motorcycle driver slowly stood cursing. “f**k!! s**t!!” He tumbled away from his fallen bike and dusted the snow off his clothes. I wondered if I should help him but then, he looked up and his steely grey eyes stuck me in place. I felt a shiver run down my spin and it wasn’t just from the snow. “You!!” He stomped over. I squeezed Lily closer to me and heard her whine in protest. “Hi, I’m sorry—” “What the hell is your problem?!” I grappled for words to say. “Uh–” “Who the hell walks a freaking dog in the middle of a f*****g road?!” I swallowed. “I’m sorry. I accidentally let go of the leash.” I lowered my voice. “You should’ve been watching the road and stopped. You almost ran over my dog.” He huffed. I could only see his eyes because for some reason he had a bandana tied over his nose and mouth and a beanie on his head. I could tell his hair was black though. “Well I’m sorry if I didn’t expect there to be a dog in the middle of a frozen road! God!!” He stalked back to his motorcycle and started dusting and setting it right. I shuffled on my foot. “Well thanks... for not running us over... or something....” He swung his leg over the motorcycle and revved the engine. “Whatever.” Then he took off.
