The woods
"Shh they might hear us" i whispered to my little sister Lara when i heard voices shouting outside and running horses. she can be a bit loud sometimes. Its hard staying with a teenager sometimes, even harder that we are not staying in a proper house. Oh well after they killed our mother we had to escape from our house near the castle and find our own safety place and we managed to exchange few items and dollars for this shack, well not so safe but breatheable.  "Sarah did you come up with something to eat?" Lara asked as she was roaming around the shack like she was looking for something. "Fruits." i replied. "Oh why did i asked anyway, its always the same thing" she said rolling her eyes and turning back to the wood bench at the corner. " Is that you saying, thank you big sis for saving us AGAIN" i exaggerated, teasing her. "In that case you will be happy that i managed to get us some chicken, well sort of" she said turning into my face with a chicken un-feathered.  "where did you get that, what did i say about going out on your own?" i shouted at her.  "But we have no food anymore sister, and i am grown i can take care of myself" she angrily said as she sat near the small fire preparing to smoke the chicken.  "Hey its fine, i am sorry for shouting at you, but please promise not to roam around again its not safe, at least after what happened to us" i said as i sat near her helping with the chicken. part of me was mad at her for her doings, she could have been caught and that would be the end of us. Its been two years since we left our house to stay here and there isn't much progress, we have no food, no proper clothes and sneaking out every time isn't helping us. At least we still have each other. Tomorrow we might go to the village of orphans to start a new life and we don't know what await us on the other side. I wish mother was alive, she would be proud of me and how i turned up to be like her by taking care of my little sister. Sometimes i wished that we had a brother, maybe he would know and do better than me. I still remember the day our mother got killed, it was so painful and so sad. I never cried that much in my whole life even today it still slap hard. Suddenly i hear steps running around the shack. Quickly we extinguished fire with water and told Lara to hide. its been long since we heard soldiers or people running in these woods. There maybe a criminal they are chasing or looking for us. What if they followed Lara here when she was outside. I shivered as steps grew louder. I walked towards the door to look through spy-holes. I couldn't see clearly because of the trees covering the shack. After a while i saw small piece of red scarf and long brown curly hair in between the branches that are fallen into the ground. I swore that was a woman and hiding something covered with the cloth in her hands. Quickly i returned to Lara and told her to stay where she was until i come back. Slowly i went to the door again but now hiding knife in my pocket. Without making a sound i managed to open the door and found a way to the stranger without scaring her, i was taking chances but i knew i had to help her in any way that i can. "Hi, please don't scream i am here to help" i said as i kept my distance. "Who are you?" She quickly stood up. ..and where did you come from? she continued, scared. "It's okay, i just want to help if i can" i responded showing my hands to her so that she can see i have nothing that can harm her. After some questions and arguments between us she finally agreed to come with me to the shack. I knew i was taking a big risk but i would die of conscience if i didn't help her.
