Tractors and Ties

736 Words
Holy. s**t. She had not expected this. Out of the cab hopped a man. He looked to be around his late 30’s and she was pretty sure from the way he wore those jeans he had to be a model. What? Where had that came from? Karis never jumped to a dirty thought yet here she was all but salivating at the sight before her. “Can I help you?” he asked with just the right amount of southern drawl. “Um, yes. I am staying in the house down here. Could you jump me off?” He raised one eyebrow. “I mean my car!” she fumbled. He still looked amused but he told her to head back to the house and he would go and grab his truck. Karis took back off towards the house and mentally kicked herself in the face multiple times. Jump me off? My gosh what was wrong with her!  Fifteen minutes passed and she saw a huge black truck barrel down the drive. Sure enough, the same man jumped out. “I’m Gabe by the way” he told her. “Karis.” she replied. While he hooked her car up, she studied the man in front of her. He was tall, maybe 6’4 and he towered over her 5 foot frame. His hair was dirty blonde and his eyes were as green as jade. It was obvious he did manual labor for a living and she had a hard time looking away from his broad shoulders that were unfortunately covered by his long sleeved shirt. Finally, her car was running. She told Gabe thank you and watched as he headed back towards his truck. “Where can I get breakfast around here?” she yelled at the last minute. He motioned for her to follow him, so off the went one behind the other. As they reached the huge gate she had driven in the night before she saw a name embossed on the outside. Parker Farms. What the hell? Parker Farms? THE PARKER FARMS? She was staying at the exact place she came here to find? Odd. Why would that have not been mentioned in the description. She puzzled over this so much that she almost missed Gabe waving his hand out of his window and pointing towards a little mom and pop restaurant. She pulled in as he drove on by. Karis, still puzzled went in and ordered herself a huge stack of pancakes. She ate every single bite and even soaked up the last of the syrup with her final bit of pancake. In New York she never had time to eat like this, and she wouldn’t dare eat this way in front of the stick thin women who she worked with. She had always had a more curvy body and she preferred it that way. She poked out in all the right places and had never been very self conscious until she started working with the 2x4’s, as she called them. Straight up one side and straight down the other. Once Karis had finished and paid, she asked the waitress which way to Keenland Race Track. She had an appointment with Mr. Triple Crown at his office there in one hour. As she drove, she dug in her pocketbook to find her little book that she kept all of her notes in. Walden. That was his name! Walden Parker. She pulled into Keenland and headed up to the entrance. Once inside, she asked to be directed to Mr. Walden Parker’s office. While she waited, she made a quick trip to the restroom. Once inside, she assessed herself. She has made a good choice today with the black wide leg pants. They hugged her in all the right places and paired with the pumps she had chosen they made her look taller than she really was. She had tucked a skintight beige turtleneck into them. The way her dark wavy hair fell over her shoulders gave her a professional, yet tousled look. Yup, she was here to do business. As soon as she stepped out of the bathroom the receptionist guided her to a different room. “Mr. Parker will see you now,” she said as she opened the door and Karis came face to face with Mr. Triple Crown.
