Into the Land of Bluegrass

254 Words
Eleven. Hours. That's how long it would take to drive from New York City to Lexington, Kentucky. Karis couldn't believe she was heading somewhere so far away. None the less, she found herself cruising down the highway in the same Honda Civic she drove to New York in 7 years ago. Living in the city never called for an upgrade. Still, she had been 23 then and her poor Honda had seen better days. It had been a great seven years in the city. Karis had moved there to be an assistant at one of the top magazines. She had quickly proved herself to the right people and had moved into the position of writer. Karis was proud of how she had earned her promotions using her own merit and not the way some girls had. She was now in line to have her own column in the magazine, she just had to get one more story and she had to get it before anyone else. That's how she found herself heading to Lexington in search of the "farm boy gone millionaire" whose horse had just won the Triple Crown. As Karis drove, she finally let herself wonder about this mystery man. Was he old? Young? Married? Single? Did he know he was the topic of many conversations? Her mind was going in a million directions. She stuffed all of those questions into the back of her mind as she cruised across the Kentucky state line singing the lyrics to Cowboy Take Me Away.
