SOL “Sally, what happened?” I gasped as a playground monitor brought the small first grader into my office. “She fell off the monkey bars,” the teacher explained. Her jeans were torn at the knee, and I could see the bloody scrapes through the tears. Her eyes swam with tears as she rubbed her face; her hair had little pieces of wood chips stuck into her loose ponytail. “I got her,” I assured the teacher as I grabbed her hand. She smiled and nodded as she headed back outside. With only four playground monitors assigned to any recess period, she couldn’t wait until Sally was all patched up before returning to the other kids.
