CHAPTER 23 “If I do take this prostitution job, won't I have to worry about getting pregnant, or worse Stds?” Janet asked, taking a stab at her strawberry on her pancake. Jason took her to their favorite place for breakfast, IHOP. “That’s why you get people screened. We have the little machine down in the basement area. A drop of blood is all you will need to test. As far as pregnancy is concerned, I doubt you will be able to do anything like that with you being cursed and such.” Janet laughed a little at his joking tone. “Like you’re not cursed. I don’t see how you’ve been doing this for so long. s*x is exhausting.” Jason smiled, thinking about his s****l encounter with Alyssa. “It can be pretty fun with the right person.” He replied, cutting his pancakes. Janet leaned in closer. “Tell me, have you met the right person?” Jason put down his fork at his sister’s anxious face. “Maybe. I’m not sure.” She sat back in disbelief. “What? How come you don’t know? I see something behind that smile, Jason Sanders. What is it? You tell me right now.” She grabbed his fork with his bite of pancake on it. He laughed as he tried to reach for it. “Fine. Yes, I did meet someone.” She placed his fork down on his plate. “She is unlike any other woman I ever met. She’s super silly, caring and sweet, shy and naïve. She is innocent and pure.” Janet took another bite of strawberry. “She does sound wonderful, but does she know about…” She hesitated to say, but Jason nodded. “It doesn’t work with her.” He shrugged. “What do you mean it doesn’t work with her?” “I mean I came with her Janet. It was weird and rejuvenating.” Janet almost spat out her lemonade she started to drink. “What? How is that possible? The curse stated…” Jason held up his hands. “I know what it says, but I did with her and her alone.” “How is that possible?” She asked, leaning over the table again as if trying to keep the secret between them. Jason shrugged again. “I don’t know. Dan claims he went to the voodoo princess and she told him there were no loopholes.” Janet sucked in her teeth. “You talked to Dan about it, seriously? That motherfucker tells so many lies he doesn’t even remember which are true anymore. You should’ve gone to the voodoo princess yourself.” Jason looked down at the table. “I’m afraid if I do she might recast the curse and then I won’t be able to come at all again.” “But if you’re wrong? What if Dan has been lying to us and she really isn’t a bad person like he says. I will go with you if you’re afraid.” She said in a teasing tone. Jason chuckled. “Maybe.” He took the bite of his pancake, then a sip of water. “So where is this wonderful fantastic woman?” Jason sighed then. “It’s complicated. We got into a little fight. She thinks I just want her because she makes me cum.” “Well do you?” She asked, taking a sip of her lemonade. Jason winced back. “No. of course not. It may have started out that way, but I didn’t know what was happening to me. I never felt the way I do with her, sexually or not. With that being said, I have been f*****g up severely. My job, these crazy women, and last but not least of them all is Dan. He doesn’t want us together so it’s been difficult for us to even see each other.” “That’s Dan for you. He f****d up his love life, now no one can be happy. He doesn’t want you to quit and if this girl is everything you say, you will have to if you want to keep her. No real woman wants to share her man with the world.” Jason smirked at his sister's advice. “What?” She asked, with a laugh. “Just look at you giving your big brother advice.” Janet hit his shoulder. “You’re only five minutes older than me, but seriously you need to fix it with her. f**k Dan and what he wants.” “How? I’m new at this.” Janet took a bite of her pancake before talking. “Send her flowers. Chicks love roses.” Jason nodded, taking in all her advice. “And hell, pay a bill for her or something. That will win me over.” Jason laughed. “I will do that, thank you for your advice.” They grew quiet as they ate their food until Jason spoke a couple minutes later. “Sometimes I feel I don’t deserve to love her. I don’t deserve to have someone like her.” Janet leaned over the table with her butter knife in her hand, pointing towards Jason as a threat. “You listen to me, Jason Sanders. No talking like Dan, ok? You are worth a good woman because you are a good man. Don’t beat yourself up over your job or lifestyle. Those things can change if you are unhappy with them, but love is a hard thing to come across.” Jason smiled at her non-threatening encouragement. “I’m glad Wilson called you to come by. I needed this.” He admitted, feeling the weight of his shoulders become a little lighter. “No problem. That is what I’m here for.” They hit their glasses together as they laughed. On the way back inside the Sanders building, Jason and Janet paused as a police officer and a familiar man at the front desk seemed to be harassing Melissa. “Excuse me?” Jason called out, causing the men to turn with Melissa looking up. Then he recognized the men now. “Officer McGee and Rick Hawthorne correct, what do I owe this pleasure?” He asked as politely as possible while walking up with Janet following. Rick acted violently then. “There the motherfucker is! Where is my wife, you son of a b***h?” He grabbed Jason’s collar. “Whoa hold on there. My brother doesn’t know where your wife is, Sir. Please calm down.” Janet touched the man’s shoulder before Jason jerked away. “I told the police everything I knew. You were the last person to see her Mr. Hawthorne so you tell me.” “You son of a…” Rick reached for him again until Officer McGee stopped him. “That’s enough, we can’t assault the man.” He warned. Jason smirked. “And why are you here, Officer?” Mcgee shook his head. “I don’t know how the hell you got Rebecca off your case, but this isn’t over with Sanders. I know you did something to Abagail Hawthorne, just like I know you’re trying to cover up Diamond Terrell…” Jason’s eyes went wide. “How the f**k…” McGee stepped into his face. “Yeah, you didn’t think I knew that, did you? Just know I know everything you and your f*****g clients do here and I will get a warrant to search this place and when I do I will love to get the front row seat to your anal rape performance in jail, s*x doctor.” Mcgee bumped past Jason with Rick, leaving him upset and worried all at once. “Just because he knows about Diamond, that doesn’t mean anything. You didn’t push her or try to kill her, Jason.” Janet said, breaking his train of thought. He looked up at the person who did and the worried look on her face. “That man has something personal against me. Again I have to suffer for something Dan caused.” He replied, with a big sigh. The next day Alyssa opened her eyes as the alarm rang out, causing her to sigh with frustration. Work was unbearable, even more so now that she had to deal with regret and a broken heart. The stresses of work were becoming too much, but she used it as an escape to keep her mind off of what happened with Jason. She did miss him more than she liked to admit. She even thought about texting or calling him a few times, but she couldn’t conjure enough courage to. It had only been two days since she kicked him out of her house. A piece of her regretted the decision to listen to Dan’s warnings. Plus everything he was going through with Abagail and the other women was all a little too much for her. Maybe if she was experienced enough in the dating game she could handle it, but not now. Once she got dressed for work she had enough time left to pay her rent online before she had to leave.  She checked the account balance and there was a zero balance. She looked confused as she checked the last payment and it said the date for the day before. She ignored the mysterious payment for now as she walked towards the door, opening it to see a bouquet of purple lilies and sunflowers on her doorstep. Again, she seemed dumbfounded by the gesture as she picked up the card to read it. “To Alyssa. I am so sorry I couldn’t be the man you needed me to be then, but I’m ready to be that man now. Forgive me because I am new at this. I never had an actual girlfriend, but I am ready to learn if you agree to be my woman. Love Jason.” The words touched her until she couldn’t do anything but smile, but she wasn’t ready to forgive him yet. Her mind concluded this was just another game to get her back in bed with him just for the nut like last time, but she would stand her ground this time she thought to herself as she drove to work. She arrived at work still giving herself more pep talk to not give in to Jason. Keisha saw her while she was clocking in. “Morning.” She greeted. “How are you feeling today? You looked a bit down yesterday and didn’t want to talk about it.” Alyssa forced a smile. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just a lot on my mind, that’s all.” She replied while they walked to her desk. “Ooh, who flowers?” Shay asked, popping up behind them. Alyssa couldn’t contain the smile that spread on her face. “OOOOhhhhhhhh, Alyssa! Are those from Jason?” She teased, poking her shoulders. Alyssa couldn’t speak as she read the card next to the flowers on her desk. “I knew you would need more persuading, but anything worth having is worth waiting for.” She laughed then out loud, unable to contain her giggles. Shay and Keisha stood over her shoulder scaring her. “Can Y'all go get y’all some business?” She joked, still laughing. Shay shook her head. “Nope. We don’t have any.” She replied. Keisha objected. “I don’t know about her but I got some over here. So there ain't no we.” Both Shay and Alyssa laughed. “I just want to thank you guys for my birthday gift. It changed my life.” She admitted. Shay tilted her head. “Oh sweetie we happy we could get you laid. Now maybe you will stop looking at me like I’m such a freak.” Alyssa shook her head. “Never.” She laughed.
