Ava rushes to the pack house, when she runs in the back door and too her room, no one got to see what she looked like, the ripped shirt and bloody abdomen.
Except Jason whose hand was mid-air about to knock on her room.
“Jason” Ava breathes out.
He turns to look at her and his eyes go wide in shock when he sees the dried blood on her torn shirt, “Ava are you okay? What happened to you?” he rushes up to her to see if she was okay.
“I’m fine, there was a rogue, but I dealt with it” Ava says in one breath.
Jason looks at her, unsure as to what to say next.
Ava initiates the speech, “I’ll just change and then we can head out” Ava slips past him and opens her bedroom door, leaving it open so Jason could enter.
He was hesitant at first, but he watches Ava walk into the bathroom with a change of clothes and proceeds to take a few steps into the bedroom.
“I don’t think we should, perhaps another time, you need to rest” Jason says not thinking going out with two serious injuries was a great plan.
Ava opens the door as she pulls down her shirt, Jason only seeing from her belly button to the top of her jeans.
“Nonsense, I’m fine, besides, I need to get out of the area for a while” Ava insists.
Jason escorts Ava out of the pack house, as they come to the front door Kyle steps in their way.
“Going somewhere?” he asks with a snide tone.
Ava rolls her eyes, “Yes, Jason asked me out for drink’s, and I said yes, so if you’d excuse me, we are just heading out” Ava spoke in a monotone.
Jason remained silent and watched the two people converse, there was something between the two, but he couldn’t figure out what.
Kyle didn’t move, so Ava tugged Jason and they stepped around him.
Even as they walked to the car, Ava felt Kyle’s piercing gaze with every step she took.
Jason was a gentleman and opened the door for Ava which she was smiling about, even though it was only drinks, no one had ever opened the door of a car for her.
They drove away from the pack house into town, Ava rarely went into town when she was here as a child, so she had no idea about locations.
“What’s with you and Kyle?” Jason questions.
Ava sighs “It’s complicated” she replied.
Jason heard the tone in her voice when she spoke and knew not to pry any further.
The bar was in the centre of town and was full when they got inside.
Jason took her to an empty corner booth and a beautiful young waitress was at their table minutes after they got seated.
“What can I get you?” she calls over the loud music and people in the building.
“Beer and whatever the lady want’s” Jason said.
The waitress looks over at Ava with a fake smile, “And you” she calls out.
“I’ll take a beer too” Ava shouts so the waitress could hear.
Rolling her eyes at the order, the young woman leaves to collect the order.
“So” Jason begins “How did you become head warrior at such a young age, and convince the high council out of their sexist past?” Jason inquires.
Ava smiles, “Um, my grandfather was on the high council and pack council until his passing, I was only small when he died, but he had a lot of friends in high places, many of the members would often come to my pack for gatherings, being one of the strongest packs in north America, they would often come to ask for help and opinions on matters. One day when I was about seven the high council came out to view the warrior training session and I just so happened to have snuck my way in. I didn’t interrupt, I stayed in the corner, but everything the warriors did I copied, terribly of course – Jason laughed – my father let me join in on the sessions and eventually when I was seventeen, some of the high council was back at my pack and saw me take down our head warrior at the time Luke, they allowed me to train to be a warrior, a month later we were helping an allied pack with rogues and Luke lost his life saving some kids. The council had me graduated early and I was put as head warrior per the request of my father and approval of 2nd warrior Carter” Ava explained.
Jason was impressed, not only was she the first female in a male organisation, but she was also the only early graduate of the training program too.
“Wow, that’s insane, and I’m sorry about Luke” Jason added on.
Ava shook her head, “It’s okay, its expected in out line of work, it’s the reason we sign up in the first place right, those kids would be alive today if it wasn’t for him, we give up our lives to save others”.
The waitress brought their drinks and left with a glare on her face.
Jason was a handsome man and he attracted a lot of attention in the bar.
Ava was enjoying herself, she was focused on Jason and nothing else, for a short while anyway.
An ache began to grow in her chest, as the moments ticked by it soon became uncomfortable, she tried to hide it but Jason noticed when she began to rub her chest in hopes of making it go away but it didn’t the ache grew until a stabbing feeling hit and Ava was gritting her teeth in agony.
“Hey, breathe, tell me what’s going on” Jason said, he held onto Ava as the pain grew sharp in her chest, he didn’t know what to do.
With the pain, her mind link opened and soon her father was feeling the pain of his daughter through the pack link.
‘Ava what’s going on?’ he asks with a worried tone.
‘My chest hurts, I feel as though I’m being stabbed repeatedly’ she cries to her father through the link.
Jason didn’t know what was going on, Ava’s eyes were screwed shut from the pain.
‘It’s you mate link, it went away before because you were away from Kyle, but you in his presence again and it’s brought it back’ Samuel explain with a mixture of emotions. Angry that his daughter was in pain yet again because of that boy and upset with himself that he put his daughter in that position.
Ava groaned and automatically leaned into Jason for comfort, his arms wrapped around her, but it didn’t help.
‘I’m going to kill him’ Samuel growls.
‘Leave it dad, I’ll deal with it’ Ava said weakly.
‘I’m sorry Ava’ Samuel spoke sadly.
‘You shouldn’t be the one that’s sorry’ she replied.
“Ava, are you okay?” Jason asked again.
Ava opened her eyes and looked at Jason, she nodded, the pain was still there, and no doubt remain for a while.
Ava closed her eyes and took a deep breath, slowly the pain subsided into a dull ache, she learned from before how to do that. It was still painful, but Ava was strong and was able to push through the feeling.
“Yeah, I’m fine, it was just…” Ava dint want to say what it was, nor did she have an excuse for it.
“Your mate having s*x with someone else?” Jason said.
Ava’s eyes go wide with surprise.
Jason chuckles, “I might not have found my mate or ever will, but I’m old enough to know what things mean in the mate world. How long ago did it happen?” he asks, he didn’t want to tread on her toes.
Ava sighs “Four years, I managed to reduce the pain over time to barely a twinge” she goes on to explain.
“But being back around Kyle has reset everything” Jason finishes.
Ava looks at Jason shocked.
“I figured Kyle was your mate with the way he reacted when I asked you out, and the coldness he has towards you, also the other reactions of panicking when he learned you were under the lighting for the stage” Jason says.
Ava nods, “Ex-mate, he rejected me” she informs him.
Jason shakes his head in disappointment for his future Alpha.
“I’m sorry” he says.
Ava shakes her head, “Don’t be, I have no feelings for that asshole, he ended it before giving it a chance to start” Ava speaks with bitterness rolling off her tongue.
Jason nods, “Want to get out of here, it’ getting loud?”.
Ava nods and they head out of the bar.
They walk side by side down the street, the street lights illuminating the side walk.
“Thank you for both the night out and the help during that” Ava says, struggling to find a word to describe what had happened because of Kyle.
“No problem” he says.
“Oh, and I’d also appreciate it, if it was kept quiet about Kyle and I’s situation” Ava asked.
Jason nodded but he didn’t understand why “I will do as you ask, but I don’t understand why you would keep it a secret from the pack, they have a right to know their future Luna, whom I might add is a powerful and the only female warrior in history was rejected by their incompetent bone-idled Alpha”.
Ava laughs at the description of Kyle.
“Yeah well, it is what it is, if he didn’t reject me, I don’t think I’d be where I am now” she says referring to the head warrior position.
The pair stop at a food truck and get some food which Jason refused to let Ava pay for.
The rest of the night was peaceful. Jason escorted Ava back to her room when they returned.
Before leaving for the night, Ava turned around and left a kiss on Jason’s cheek, “Thank you for tonight, I really enjoyed myself”.
He reciprocated the smile Ava had on her lips.
“I’m glad you had fun” he said, but Ava noticed he was holding something back.
“Is everything okay?” she questioned.
“Um, I like you and everything” Jason began. Ava knew immediately where it was going and smiled.
“It’s okay, I understand, you don’t feel that way about me – Jason’s shoulder drops with a sigh of relief – I feel the same about you too”.
Ava smiled, she wasn’t really feeling the romance vibe with Jason thanks to the date they just went on, each saw the other as a friend and nothing more.
The new friends said their goodnights and Jason left Ava to head to his own room.
When she walked into the room it was pitch black, but Ava walked through her room to the bathroom without falling over anything.
When the light lit up the bathroom Ava stood in front of the mirror and just stared at herself.
The pain of Kyle having s*x with that girl Jane subsided on the way home in the truck, but the other pain she carried was growing and Ava thought it was time to take some morphine to help her sleep, tomorrow was another training day and despite the doctor’s orders to rest, she had a job to do.
A few boards creaked under foot as Jesse headed to the medical bay.
Garrett was still in his office when Ava walked in. looking up from his paperwork he smiled, “Morphine?” he asks.
Ava nodded.
“I must admit – raising to his feet and heading to the cabinet of controlled drugs – I’m surprised it’s taken you this long to come back for pain medication” Garrett says.
“Yeah well, a second injury tends to create more pain” she says.
Garrett turns around with a bottle of morphine in hand about to grab a needle when he sees the new bandage with blood seeping through.
“How the hell did you do that?” he asks. Placing the vile down, Garrett grabs a set of gloves and put them on before moving to examine the new injury.
“Doesn’t matter, just check it out for me please and then give me a dose of morphine so I can sleep, I have a busy schedule tomorrow” Ava explains.
Garrett shakes his head disapproving on Ava’s plans, but she didn’t care.
The doctor cleans and rebandages both wounds then ready’s a needle of morphine for Ava.
Once administered he begins to clean up, “Come back in the morning to have that cleaned again” Garrett says and Ava nods, heading out of the door before he could add anything else.
A noise from the kitchen had Ava curious as to who was awake this late in the evening.
The light was off, but the fridge was open, and someone was rummaging inside.
She knew his scent immediately and recoiled in disgust. His back was bare, only walking around in his boxers.
Kyle was too engrossed in the leftover food in front of him that he didn’t sense anyone else about.
Stepping back from the fridge his mouth already full of food, he closes the door with his foot; his hands full of foods he was craving.
His eyes land on Ava stood in the doorway.
She rolls her eyes and turns to head to bed, he was a spiteful man, he knew what would happen to Ava when he had s*x with another, and yet he continued to cause her pain.
When she got to her room, Ava undressed and laid on the bed in her underwear, looking up to the ceiling, she sighed. It was a long day. But her mind was focused on the encounter in the woods.
She remembers the scent they carried like it was minutes ago. It was difficult to decipher their smell was like a rogue, but they were human, which meant they still had a pack. It was all so confusing to Ava.
Ava drifted to sleep staring at the ceiling, it was late, but it didn’t stop her from waking up at four in the morning, eating and then getting ready for a run before her second day of training.
Mason was again sat at the kitchen table reading the newspaper.
“Morning” Ava spoke with a yawn.
Mason looked at Ava with annoyance “You’re supposed to be resting for a few days” he states.
Ava shakes her head, “I’m fine” she insists then leaves the pack house for her run.
Ava was out of breath by the time the last group was training with her.
Mason came to check on Ava and found her laying on the ground breathing heavily, “And this is why I told you to take the next few days off” he says with a shake of his head.
Ava didn’t look at him, her eyes remained closed as she tried to get her breathing under control.
“The more I work, the faster I heal” Ava says. She wasn’t wrong, when Ava trained, she invoked her wolf abilities and those abilities are the ones that gave her speed healing and quick reflexes, among others.
“Okay, I’m going to start rebuilding the stage” Mason said and left Ava to catch her breath.
The sun shone brightly in the sky and Ava occupied herself with the clouds passing by till her breathing was back to normal.
When her stomach started rumbling Ava headed into the pack house to get some food. Yet again Sarah was in the kitchen cooking up a storm.
“What smells good?” Ava wondered.
“Tacos and burritos, I managed to save you some before everyone scoffed them” Sarah says as she hands over a plate of five tacos with three burritos by their side.
Ava took them and sat at the kitchen island, before Sarah even turned away, “Jeez Ava take a breath won’t you” Sarah chuckles.
Ava looks at her and smiles with a mouth full of tacos making Sarah laugh more.
“Oh, how I’ve missed you” Sarah comments.
