The pack house was only ever quiet during the night, Ava’s favourite time, she had chance to think, train more and find ways to build on the small pack land. Ava sat in the bay window of her room; the moon high in the sky on a beautiful clear night. She wasn’t much of a sleeper; her mind was always racing with hundreds of thoughts and ideas. With her wolf senses, everything around her was heightened, the crickets in the grass were heard in Ava’s room; even with the window closed. She could even hear her father in the office. This was unusual. Samuel, though very dedicated to his job as Alpha to the pack, he made sure he slept enough or else it would take his toll. Which was why Ava was curious as to why her father was still in his office at this time of night. Each footstep was silent, growing up in the pack house, Ava learned where every squeaky floorboard was, she made sure to avoid each of them as she walked to the office door. The only light downstairs luminated the hallway that led to the office, the door was ajar. Only one smell was in the office, it belonged to her father, but there were two voices; he was on the phone and to someone Ava hasn’t heard or seen in four years. Opening the door, Ava walks right in without and invitation. She needed no permission like the others in the pack, she was after all going to be working from this office when she becomes Alpha. Samuel glances at his daughter and smiles. She reciprocates as she makes her way to the bay window behind the office desk and sat down. Though she was looking out the window, her mind was focused on the conversation her father was having with an old friend. “I’m sorry Mason, you know if I could send Carter I would, but we’ve been having trouble with rogues recently and they’ve been growing in numbers” Samuel sighs as he explains to his friend why he couldn’t help. Mason was his oldest friend, their fathers were also best friends, Mason was meant to be Samuels Beta at the Night Star Pack, but Mason came of age to shift and met his mate and Sarah being the only child to the Alpha of the Snow Stone pack, he moved to Sarah’s home. They’ve kept in touch ever since. Mason also sighed down the phone, he was disappointed his best friend couldn’t help him out with the bind he was in, he was about to give up when he remembered something. “Isn’t Ava, your head warrior now? Can’t she come and help out?” Mason suggested. At the sound of her name and hearing it in that sentence, she leapt forward and tried to grab the phone from her father’s grip. Unfortunately, Samuel predicted this reaction and moved before his daughter could reach him. Ava aggressively shakes her head, begging her father to deny his friend of that suggestion, she hadn’t been back there in four years and she wasn’t about to go back now. It was still too soon. But Samuel didn’t think the same as his daughter and immediately agreed, “I’ll have Ava head up this week”. The conversation soon ended, and Samuel turned to his daughter who was glaring so much he could feel his wolf cowering. An unusual move for an Alpha. “Couldn’t not help him Ava, he’s my best friend, despite everything that happened between you and…” Ava’s hand raises to his face “Don’t even think about saying that vile ass’ name, I cannot believe you would make me go back to him” Ava fumed. Samuel shake his head, “I’m not making you go back to ‘him’ I’m asking you to help out another Alpha with training his pack”. “Yeah dad, the very same pack that the ass is supposed to take over one day”. Ava was now pacing back and forth; it was the only way to calm herself down in this situation without breaking anything. Sitting back in his office chair, he turns to face Ava who was still carrying a look of dismay, “I know this is going to be hard”. Ava scoffs, “Hard is an understatement” she mutters. Samuel gives a small smile. “I really ned you to do this, they are hosting the games this year and Mason is struggling to get Ky… - the look on Ava’s face silenced his name – to do his duties, he just needs help getting the new wolves in control and training whilst he and Sarah plan for the games”. Ava saw the look of pleading her father had on his face and in his voice. She would do anything for him, and he knew that, which made Ava more annoyed at him for exploiting this fact. “You owe me big time for this” Ava states, her voice stern showing her father she wasn’t joking. Samuel nodded his head and then kissed his only child on the forehead in gratitude, “Thank you, sweetheart, you leave in the morning”. Seconds later Samuel was back on the phone with his old friend telling him Ava was heading out in the morning. Ava left her father in the office with a smile on his face. Ava however was cursing under her breath. She almost slammed her door closed, but it was the middle of the night and there were children asleep. Grabbing the duffel bag and suitcase from the top shelf of her closet, Ava aggressively shoved her clothes into the bags and cases, her mind was wandering, and she knew where it was heading. She needed to re-pack her bag, there was no way she could think straight knowing her bag was in a mess. Each item was pulled out and Ava re-folded them before putting them back into the bag again. By two in the morning, Ava was packed for a two-week trip, no doubt something would go wrong but, she agreed; coerced mostly but there was no turning back now. Four years had passed since Ava was at the Snow Stone Pack and it was her intention to never return. So much for that now. But at the beginning of the year when the high council chose this decades host for the games, Ava knew she would have to go to the territory for a week of the games, and with thousands of wolves present, it was unlikely Ava would have to come face to face with him. Now she was going to be there for three weeks, two weeks longer than originally planned. As Ava looked at the two bags of clothes in front of her and decided that a bag of things to occupy herself with in her spare time would also be useful to the young women. A wandering mind is a dangerous mind and Ava was all too familiar with nothing to distract her. A second duffel was filled with training gear, books, her laptop, and other things to entertain herself with on the near month trip. Sighing, Ava plonks herself down on the edge of the bed and just stares at the wall, her mind was still racing and trying to process what was happening, there was no way she would be able to sleep now. Silence filled the room, only the sound of the clock ticking for every second, it was a calming feeling for Ava as it was the only noise in the room she could focus on. When her mind finally caught up, she decided a run would help with staying calm, also it was the only time she was able to run when she was young. Samuel took her out at night so she could run freely without any of the pack seeing her for her own safety. The was a great time for Ava and Samuel to bond without any of the pack about, and he was able to check the territory to make sure it was all safe and secure. As she got older, Ava did it on her own, her father had too much on to wake up in the middle of the night and go for a run. Hidden from the pack house, Ava shifts into her pure black wolf. The feeling was euphoric as the wind ran through her fur as she picked up speed. To anyone else, everything would be a blur, but Ava saw everything as if it were in slow motion. It’s been a while since I’ve been free to run Alana spoke with glee. Ava smiled ‘I know, I’m sorry, I wish I could bring you out more, but people would ask too many questions’ Alana sighed, I get it, were different, I knew that the moment I came into your life you were different, I didn’t think it would be so hard, especially after… Ava cut Alana off immediately ‘Don’t you dare go back there again, I only just pulled you up when it happened, just because were going back there, doesn’t mean anything, were doing a job then joining the pack games and coming home, we’ll never see him again, even if I did want him back I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction’ The link was cut, and Ava pushed to take over, Alana wasn’t a weak wolf, sentimental mostly and she always saw the good in others. Ava however wasn’t as nice. He broke their heart and ripped her soul in two before he even gave it chance to work, those kinds of people didn’t get second chances. Ava ran for hours, and because of that, dawn came sooner than she thought. Samuel helped his daughter with her bags into the bed of her truck. Ava walked back to the front of her truck and opened the door to her old beat up Chevrolet pickup and turned to her father still carrying a sour look on her face. Samuel smiles and places his hands on both sides of his only child’s head, leaning forward he leaves a kiss on her forehead. “Still can’t believe you’re making me do this” Ava sighed. Samuel nodded his head, “I know and I’m sorry, but you only have to be there on your own for two weeks and then the pack will be there for the games”. Ava smiled, but it was forced, even the pack games she was dreading. Samuel hugged his daughter for the last time for the next two weeks “Be careful on your trip and don’t kill him when you get there okay?”. Ava chuckled, but it unintentionally turned malicious, her wolf was trying to push through, but Ava held her back. If she were to go full wolf, Ava would never gain control until her wolf was satisfied that he felt the same pain she did all those years ago, and then more. Ava was extremely connected to her wolf, especially when her anger grew, it was as if Alana suddenly flips to kill mode whenever Ava gets angry and that in itself was dangerous, so Ava had to keep her emotions in check. Almost a year after the rejection, Ava would wake up screaming in the middle of the night, in the beginning she didn’t know what it was until her father explained it was him having s*x with other wolves. The worst part was when Samuel had to tell his daughter that the ultimate pain was yet to come when he officially mates with someone. “I won’t, but I can’t say the same for Alana, she’s clawing to get out and rip him to shreds”. Samuel chuckles, he understood exactly what his daughter was going through, but she managed it a lot better than he did and she has remained that way ever since, he however always relapsed on certain days of the year that reminded him of the women he once loved. Samuel waved his daughter off as she drove away from the pack house and headed towards the Snow Stone Pack. Unfortunately, Samuel couldn’t go with her there was too much to do at the pack territory to fortify it ready for when the majority leave for the games in two weeks’ time, along with practising for the Pack Games.
