Chapter 1_ The First Day
The iron gates of Westbridge University stood open beneath a bright morning sky, welcoming the steady flow of students into the new semester. Elowen Hartley paused just inside the entrance. For a moment, she simply stood there, taking it all in. The courtyard stretched wider than she had imagined, filled with moving students moving in every direction. Some confident, others distracted, checking phones or schedules. Laughter drifted near the fountain at the center, mixing with overlapping conversations. Tall buildings of pale stone and glass surrounded the space, banners for the new academic year swaying gently in the breeze. Elowen adjusted her backpack and stepped forward. She joined the steady flow toward the main buildings, passing students holding coffee cups or clutching notebooks like lifelines. Most of them looked as new as she felt, and that thought eased her nerves. Westbridge had always sounded huge. Now she understood it truly was. Even the courtyard felt bigger than her entire neighborhood street. Her mind briefly drifted to Hartley’s Bakery. It was her family’s small corner shop, filled every morning with the smell of fresh bread. Her father baked before dawn, while her mother worked the counter with a familiar warmth. Elowen had grown up there, helping with small tasks—packing pastries, wiping tables, arranging displays. It was a life of routine and familiarity. Now she was here, stepping into something entirely different. A sudden clatter pulled her back to the present. A boy ahead dropped his notebooks, scattering them across the path. Two students quickly helped him gather them. “First day nerves,” one said with a laugh. The boy thanked them awkwardly and hurried off. Elowen slowed slightly, then continued. Ahead, the fountain came into view, water spilling into a wide stone basin. Students sat along its edge, chatting easily. The campus felt alive in a way that was difficult to define. Everywhere she looked, something was happening: students arguing lightly over timetables, others comparing notes from orientation, bursts of laughter breaking out in random corners. Then, briefly, the atmosphere shifted. A few heads turned in the same direction near the fountain. Conversations softened as attention subtly moved toward someone crossing the courtyard. Elowen noticed the change without looking up. Probably someone well-known. Universities like this always had people who drew attention without trying. She kept walking toward the main building. Across the courtyard, Sebastian Whitmore moved through the central stone path. Sebastian Whitmore was not just another student. He was the son of Charles Whitmore, a billionaire investor whose name frequently appeared in financial news. The Whitmore family’s influence stretched across real estate, technology, and investment industries, making them one of those names people recognized even outside business circles. But on campus, Sebastian’s reputation wasn’t about his family. He was already one of the most noticed students at Westbridge—tall, effortlessly attractive, and confident in a way that attracted attention without needing to ask for it. By his second year, Sebastian had already become one of the most talked-about students at Westbridge. Some admired him, some envied him, and many simply wanted to be near him. Girls especially. Several of them were already standing near the fountain, pretending to be deep in conversation while occasionally glancing in his direction. Sebastian, however, barely acknowledged any of it. He was used to attention and usually moved through campus with calm indifference. But today, something caught his eye. A girl walking quietly along the outer edge of the courtyard. She wasn’t talking to anyone. She wasn’t trying to draw attention to herself. If anything, she seemed deliberately removed from the louder energy surrounding the fountain and the centre path. Her steps were steady, her posture relaxed, and her gaze remained fixed ahead as if she had already chosen her direction and had no reason to look anywhere else. Sebastian slowed slightly. That was unusual. Most people noticed him immediately. She didn’t even glance up. He watched as she stepped aside for a group of students, then continued toward the building without hesitation. No hesitation. No awareness of him at all. His curiosity sharpened. She didn’t look nervous like most first-years. She didn’t look impressed either. She simply seemed… untouched by everything around her. By the time she reached the steps of the faculty building, Sebastian realized he had been watching longer than he meant to. Interesting. Elowen climbed the steps and entered the building. Cool air replaced the courtyard heat. Inside, students moved through the hallway, voices echoing under the high ceiling. She checked her timetable. Room 214. Second floor. She headed upstairs, weaving through the crowd until she found her classroom. The door was slightly open. A few students were already seated. Elowen slipped inside quietly and chose a seat near the middle. She placed her bag down and opened her notebook as more students entered. Outside, Westbridge continued buzzing with life. And near the fountain, Sebastian Whitmore lingered a moment longer than usual, his gaze drifting toward the building she had entered. He didn’t know her name. He didn’t know her class. But for the first time, someone had caught his attention without trying. And she had no idea.
