“I saw those photos months ago,” Ken said, his eyes fixed on hers, searching for something false and finding nothing. “Then I found you. A woman in a small town who looked exactly like the one standing beside the man who destroyed my family.”
His voice was low, steady, but there was old anger buried inside it.
“I thought you were bait, Mindy. I thought Santiago sent you to get close to me. To make me trust you. To make me want to protect you. I thought you were there to lower my guard while they robbed this company for millions.”
He stepped closer, slow and controlled, never taking his eyes off her. “That is why I never trusted you. I kept waiting for the moment you would slip. I kept waiting for the polished Maria’s sister to show herself.”
