Chapter 2

The heavy rain hammered against the roof of Alec Mercer’s sleek, midnight-black Maybach as the rear door clicked shut. The interior smelled of expensive leather, cedarwood, and the faint, intoxicating scent of Alec’s cologne. Elena sat on the heated leather seat, still shivering slightly from the rain. Beside her, Alec tossed his wet umbrella into the front passenger side before settling into the seat next to her. His presence swallowed the back of the car entirely; his broad shoulders and towering frame made the spacious interior feel suddenly small, warm, and hyper-charged with tension. "Drive, Thomas," Alec ordered calmly. The glass partition slid up, sealing them into a private, quiet world. Elena pressed herself back into the leather, clutching her damp arms. "Mr. Mercer—" "Alec," he corrected, his voice a low, smooth rumble. He reached across the seat, pulled a soft cashmere throw blanket from a side compartment, and draped it gently over her shoulders. His hand lingered near her neck, his knuckles softly brushing against the exposed skin above her collarbone. Elena’s breath hitched. She expected him to pull away, but Alec’s dark, icy eyes met hers in the dim cabin light, scanning her face with an intensity that made her skin prickle. "You're freezing," he murmured, his thumb lightly stroking the side of her jaw before finally drawing back. "Drink this." He poured two fingers of amber liquid from a crystal decanter and placed the heavy glass directly into her hands. Elena swallowed, her fingers wrapping around the glass. "Why were you outside the Hyatt? Why were you looking for me?" Alec leaned back against his seat, crossing one long leg over the other. "Because three hours ago, Julian Vance walked into my executive boardroom boasting about a revolutionary branding proposal for Vance Media. He strutted around like a king." Alec let out a low, dark laugh. "But the moment I pressed him on the underlying typography choices, the market demographic strategy, and the structural design architecture... he crumbled. He didn't know a single detail of his own pitch." A bitter, familiar ache bloomed in Elena’s chest. "Because he didn't write it. I spent four straight days pulling all-nighters to finish that deck for him." "I know," Alec said smoothly. "I recognized your signature vector design style embedded in the master files. You won the National Design Summit two years ago, Elena. I know your work better than you think." Elena blinked, stunned. Julian had spent years telling her that her work was average, that without his business connections, her designs were useless. Alec leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, bringing his face dangerously close to hers. "Julian Vance is a leech living off your brilliance. And tonight, he threw away the architect of his entire future for a girl whose only achievement is looking frail." Elena felt a flush heat her cheeks—not from shame this time, but from the raw, undeniable attraction radiating from the man in front of her. "He called me... he said no man of status would take a woman of my size seriously." Alec’s eyes darkened, turning to liquid storm clouds. His gaze dropped slowly from her eyes, down to her full, flush lips, sweeping over her heavy chest, her defined waist, and the lush curve of her hips under the wet blue silk. There was no pity in his eyes. Only raw, predatory appreciation. "Then Julian Vance is blind, deaf, and profoundly stupid," Alec whispered, his voice dropping an octave, rich and thick with sincerity. "A woman with your mind, carrying curves like yours, isn't meant for a boy who needs a doll on his arm to feel like a man. You were made to rule a room, Elena. He was simply too small to handle you." The air in the car turned thick, heavy with a heat that made Elena’s pulse hammer against her ribs. No one had ever spoken to her like this. No one had ever looked at her body like it was a masterpiece rather than a flaw to be hidden. "What is your proposition, Alec?" she asked, her voice steadying as a dangerous spark ignited in her chest. Alec smiled, a slow, predatory curving of his lips that signaled trouble for anyone standing in his way. "Tomorrow morning, Mercer Enterprises announces the creation of a new luxury design division," Alec said, his eyes locking onto hers. "You will be named the Chief Creative Officer. You will have a multi-million-dollar budget, a corner office overlooking the city, and absolute creative freedom." Elena’s heart leaped. "And Julian?" "Vance Media’s biggest investor contract hinges on my approval," Alec replied coldly. "I pull the funding tomorrow at 9:00 AM. Without my backing, his credit lines collapse, his clients leave, and his precious new company bleeds out before the month ends." Alec reached out, taking the empty glass from her hand and setting it aside. He grasped her hand, wrapping his long, warm fingers securely around hers. "I will give you the platform to build an empire that dwarfs his pitiful little firm," Alec continued, his dark eyes burning into hers. "I will give you the wealth, the power, and the status he stole from you. And in return, you let me give you everything you’ve ever deserved... starting with watching him fall to his knees." Elena looked down at their joined hands, feeling the strength and authority in his grip. The tears she had cried in the rain felt like a distant memory, replaced by a cold, thrilling fire. She looked up at Alec, a dangerous, beautiful smile finally touching her lips. "When do we start?" Alec’s eyes flashed with fierce satisfaction. He lifted her hand to his lips, pressing a warm, lingering kiss to her knuckles that sent a shiver straight down her spine. "Right now," Alec purred against her skin. "Thomas, change of plans. We're going to my penthouse."
