Chapter 1
The air inside the VIP lounge of the Grand Hyatt was thick with expensive perfume, laughing guests, and the sharp clink of champagne flutes. Elena Vance stood near the grand archway, smoothing down the front of her dark blue cocktail dress. It was a well-tailored dress, structured to hug her lush curves, but as usual, she felt a familiar pang of self-consciousness. She adjusted the heavy emerald necklace around her neck—a piece she had spent three months of her hard-earned design bonuses to buy as a surprise gift for Julian. Tonight was Julian’s night. At thirty, he was finally launching his boutique marketing firm, Vance Media. What none of the fifty high-society guests in the room knew was that Elena had designed the entire corporate identity, written every single investor pitch, and quietly cleared his $40,000 credit debt over the past three years so he could stand in this room looking like a success. "Looking sharp, boss," a voice cooed beside her. Elena turned to see Chloe Miller squeezing past a waiter holding a tray of oysters. Chloe was small, delicate, and practically weightless—the kind of woman who looked like a gentle gust of wind might blow her away. She was wearing a skin-tight, champagne-gold silk dress that barely covered her thighs, her fine blond hair falling in effortless waves around her porcelain face. Elena offered a warm, weary smile. Chloe had been her best friend since college. When Chloe lost her job six months ago, Elena had invited her to move into her apartment rent-free, sharing her clothes, her food, and her life. "I'm so nervous for him, Chloe," Elena admitted, taking a sip of sparkling water. "If the board members from the Sterling Group sign tonight, his future is set." Chloe adjusted her golden strap, her eyes darting over Elena’s shoulder toward the center of the room. A strange, knowing smirk flickered across her petite lips before vanishing behind a look of wide-eyed innocence. "Oh, Elena. His future is definitely going to be set tonight," Chloe whispered softly. "You’ve done so much for him. Everyone knows it." Before Elena could process the odd tone in her voice, the room went quiet as a spoon tapped rhythmically against a crystal glass. Julian Vance stepped up onto the raised mahogany platform near the front of the ballroom. Tall, jawline sharp, and impeccably groomed in a tailor-made charcoal suit, he looked every bit the rising mogul. He flashed his trademark charismatic smile, letting his blue eyes sweep across the crowd before landing briefly on Elena. Elena’s heart fluttered with pride. All the late nights, the stress, the endless revisions—it was all worth it to see him here. "Good evening, everyone," Julian began, his voice smooth and confident through the microphone. "Thank you for joining me to mark the birth of Vance Media. Building something from the ground up takes vision. It takes relentless drive. But most of all, it takes the right partners." Applause rippled through the room. Julian raised a hand, gesturing for quiet. "Tonight, as I take this giant leap forward, I realize that success is meaningless if you don't have the right person standing beside you," Julian continued, his tone turning intimate. "For a long time, I tried to convince myself that comfort and loyalty were enough. I settled for what was convenient, even when it didn't fit the image of where I was going." Elena frowned slightly. A cold knot began to form in the pit of her stomach. The word settled felt like a stray needle pricking her skin. "A real man needs a woman who elevates him," Julian said, his eyes scanning the room once more, completely passing over Elena. "A woman who matches his elegance. A woman who looks like a dream on his arm when he steps into the spotlight. And tonight, I’m done settling." Whispers began to rustle through the crowd like dry leaves. Elena stood frozen, the heavy emerald box suddenly feeling like lead in her evening clutch. "Chloe, darling," Julian called out, extending his hand toward the archway. "Come up here." Elena’s breath hitched. She slowly turned her head to look at her best friend. Chloe didn't look surprised. She offered Elena a small, almost pitying sigh, then smoothed down her champagne dress and glided toward the stage with practiced grace. She took Julian’s hand, stepping onto the platform and resting her tiny, manicured hand against his chest. Julian wrapped his arm around Chloe’s narrow waist, pulling her flush against his body. He smiled down at her with a raw, intense heat that he hadn't shown Elena in over a year. "I am proud to introduce the true inspiration behind Vance Media," Julian announced loudly into the microphone, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "My muse, my partner, and the woman I love—Chloe Miller." The room gasped in unison. Heads snapped toward Elena. Dozens of eyes—some shocked, some amused, some mocking—landed squarely on her heavy frame standing isolated by the archway. "Julian... what is this?" Elena’s voice was barely a whisper, but in the sudden silence of the room, it carried. Julian looked down at her from the stage, his expression flattening into a cold, clinical sneer. He didn't drop the microphone. "I think it’s pretty self-explanatory, Elena," Julian said, his voice amplified for everyone to hear. "We’re done. I was going to tell you privately, but you’ve always had a habit of hovering and forcing yourself into spaces where you don't belong." A few cruel chuckles broke out among the upper-class guests near the bar. Chloe feigned a look of gentle concern, clutching Julian’s lapel. "Elena, please don't be mad," she whimpered into the microphone, her voice dripping with fake sweet sorrow. "We didn't mean for this to happen. We just couldn't fight our natural chemistry anymore. You're so... strong. You can handle this. I'm just a delicate girl, I need Julian to protect me. Please... just be happy for us?" Elena felt the ground beneath her heels sway. Tears burned behind her eyelids, but she gritted her teeth, refusing to let a single drop fall in front of these vultures. "You used me," Elena said, stepping forward, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and heartbreak. "Three years, Julian. I wrote your business plan. I paid off your debt. I sacrificed my own work to make you look brilliant!" Julian chuckled dismissively, shaking his head. "You gave me advice, Elena. That’s what desperate women do when they’re trying to keep a man out of their league. Look at yourself." His gaze traveled slowly, disgustingly over her thick waist, her broad shoulders, and her full hips. "Did you really think a guy like me was going to introduce a girl of your size as the first lady of Vance Media? Be realistic. You look like my bodyguard, not my girlfriend. No high-status man in this city is ever going to take you seriously." Gasps echoed through the room once more. The humiliation was absolute, sharp and suffocating. Elena swallowed the lump in her throat. She dropped the expensive emerald box onto a passing waiter’s tray with a heavy clatter, stared Julian dead in his eyes, and walked out of the ballroom without saying another word. Outside, the night air was freezing, and rain had begun to pour in heavy, relentless sheets. Elena didn't call a cab. She walked down the slick pavement, letting the icy water soak through her dress, washing away the carefully applied makeup and the bitter shame. No high-status man is ever going to take you seriously. His words burned in her mind, over and over. She had spent three years shrinking her personality, hiding her talents, and dressing in dark, baggy clothes just to make Julian feel big. And in the end, he had crushed her anyway. She stopped under the glowing neon sign of a late-night coffee shop, leaning against a cold marble pillar, her shoulders finally shaking with silent, ragged sobs. Suddenly, the torrential rain stopped hitting her head. Elena blinked, wiping rain and tears from her eyes. A massive black umbrella was hovering over her, blocking out the storm. Beside her stood a man so impossibly striking that he seemed to belong to a different world. He was towering, broad-shouldered, with silver-toned dark hair pushed back cleanly from a sculpted, aristocratic face. His icy blue eyes were sharp, dark, and intently focused on her face. He wore a dark bespoke coat that practically screamed power and astronomical wealth. Elena recognized him instantly. Alexander Mercer. The ruthless, media billionaire CEO of Mercer Enterprises—the most powerful creative conglomerate in the country. A man Julian had tried and failed to get a thirty-second meeting with for six months. Alec didn't say a word at first. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a crisp silk handkerchief, and stepped closer into her personal space. He didn't look at her body with judgment; his eyes held an intense, dark fascination. "A woman with eyes like yours shouldn't be crying over trash," Alec said, his deep, velvet voice slicing through the sound of the falling rain. He reached out and gently wiped a raindrop from her cheek, his thumb brushing against her skin, sending a jolt of pure electricity straight down her spine. Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat. "Mr. Mercer... you... you know who I am?" Alec’s lips curled into a slow, dangerous, incredibly handsome smile. "I know you wrote the entire pitch deck that Julian Vance tried to sell to my board this afternoon," Alec purred, stepping even closer until Elena could feel the heat radiating from his massive chest. "He’s a fool. He brought me a diamond and claimed he created it himself." Alec reached down, taking her trembling, cold hand in his warm, powerful grip, lifting it to his lips for a slow, lingering kiss that made Elena’s heart leap into her throat. "I’ve been looking for you, Elena Vance," Alec whispered, his icy eyes locking onto hers with burning intensity. "I have a proposition for you. One that will give you the world... and put that little boy on his knees."
