My phone rang at two in the morning. I fumbled for it and answered. For a long moment, nobody said a word, just the sound of someone breathing on the other end. I was about to hang up. "It's me, Elliot. I'm drunk. Come pick me up." Victoria Sterling's voice was hoarse, soaked in alcohol. I had been groggy seconds before, but now I was wide awake. I glanced at the caller ID and carefully chose my words. "It's really late. I was already asleep." "You're in love with me, aren't you? If you show up right now, I'll let you stick around even after I get married." I still said no. "That wouldn't be appropriate." Laughter erupted on the other end. Some guy shouted, "Looks like you've lost your touch. You lost the bet. That sports car is mine now." "Weird how Elliot suddenly stopped chasing. Shouldn't he have come running like a happy little puppy?" So it was all a bet. I let out a quiet breath of relief. Then I heard Victoria's voice drop, turning cold and sharp as ice. "Aren't you the one who loves me the most, loves me enough to die for me? Last time I tried to break things off, you pulled that whole suicide stunt. What changed all of a sudden? If you don't come tonight, don't ever bother showing your face around me again." She hung up before I could respond. Moonlight spilled through the gap in the curtains, soft as water. I sighed. Of course I had loved Victoria once. When I first found out she was going to marry another man, I even tried to take my own life. But the person sitting here right now was not the one who loved her anymore.
