DARIUS’ POV
Seraphina’s blue eyes kept on staring inquisitively, waiting for the answer which I wasn’t ready to give.
But it had seemed like I was obliged for peace to reign.. she seemed like chaos that was ready to rise at every moment.
“King Darius?” Her eyes reminded me that she was still waiting. She flicked her silver hair and took two more steps further. “Who is she? Why have you chosen to keep her here for this long?”
I wondered how she was able to know that Nara had been in the castle longer than when she saw her. That meant that there was someone in the castle who was telling her whatever happened whenever she was away.
“You just came back, Seraphina. Why don’t you go get some rest?”
“I am fine. Just answer the question” She insisted, almost rolling her eyes until she remembered who I was.
“She is nobody, Seraphina.” I lied. “She is no one you should be worried about, and I think you should focus all your attention on some other things.”
She was silent, but that was usually the way she was each time she was up to something. The unpleasant look on her face had intensified, and she suddenly began to mutter under her breath.
“If she is truly a nobody, then you shouldn’t have any problem sending her away. Or is the almighty Lycan King scared of an ordinary peasant?”
“She is not a peasant!” I corrected, vexed by her constant calling of names.
She was stunned. She looked at me for a while to be sure that it was truly me, and I didn’t even realize that I had startled her with my outburst.
“I have never seen you defend anyone like that, not to talk of a stranger. There is something about this stranger, and I am going to find out.”
That was the last thing she said before she left. Her words sounded like a threat to my mate, but I was King, and my decision was going to stand. There was no way I was going to let her influence me even though I knew I was under a firm obligation to do whatever I could to make sure she was comfortable.
I sighed, it was finally time for me to get some rest or so I thought.
A knock came on the door, and I grunted in annoyance.
“King Darius? May I come in?” My Beta’s voice resounded from the back of the door, and I had to struggle to remember the reason why I sent for him.
“You may come in, Asher,” I responded and he came in at once.
“You asked to see me.” He said, but then he noticed the worrisome look on my face, “Are you alright?” He asked, but there was no answer to give to him.
Asher and I grew up together alongside Seraphina. Everyone thought the two of them were going to end up together, but she chose me instead.
What no one knew was that I didn’t choose her myself. Fate just chose her for me, and I had to succumb wholeheartedly.
Asher was not just my right-hand man, he was my eyes and was always eager to carry out any instruction I gave to him without asking questions.
“What troubles you?” He asked, but my feet felt like they were tired of standing and I had to go sit on my throne.
Asher followed at once and stood in front of me. He didn’t seem like he was going to leave until I was ready to speak.
“Do you think I made the right choice by agreeing to marry her?” I was eager for a response, but Asher looked like he was a bit confused.
“Marry who? Who do you speak of?” He returned the question, and all I did was stare back a him.
“You speak of Princess Seraphina?”
I nodded silently and he sighed.
I had a strong feeling that I was asking the wrong person that question considering the past they shared together, but I didn’t have any choice.
Asher was the only one who seemed t understand my plight. Our closeness which almost had no limits had made him a greater part of my life.
“Why do you suddenly have doubts, King Darius? It’s been a year since you and Princess Seraphina were betrothed together.”
The only thing Asher didn’t know was that it was never my intention to agree to the planned union, but I didn’t have any choice. It almost seemed like I was compelled to, but there was no way I could tell anyone.
It was going to seem like I was a weak King, and presenting myself as such was the last thing I needed.
“Seraphina is the best choice of a Queen, my King. The Lycan territory deserves a strong warrior who is from a noble home, and she is the perfect choice.”
I was silent, but there were a lot of thoughts running through my mind.
Asher spoke like he had rehearsed those words, and I couldn’t tell why he didn’t want to be honest with me.
He knew about all the times I had rejected her in the past. Maybe it was because I knew he had a thing for her, or maybe because I just didn’t want to be associated with someone as rude as she was.
“Seraphina will make the perfect Queen for you. This is just your mind trying to play tricks on you.” Asher had a confident smile on his face, but it almost seemed like it was fake.
“Is this the only reason why you sent for me? I was thinking that you were going to speak about Alpha Caelum’s impudence. They say he has no regard for you…”
“That has nothing to do with us, Asher. Maybe when he attacks one of our own directly, but not now.” My countenance was plain, and I was expecting the surprised look on Asher’s face.
“This is not you, King Darius. The friend I know would have ordered an attack on Silvermoon Pack by now.” He was right, but that was a moment of diplomacy.
“We have to be very careful of our actions, Asher. More rivals are rising, and our allies seem to be shifting..”
“I don’t agree with you…” Asher objected. “Allow me to summon Alpha Caelum that way, his refusal to oblige you will show his impudence and we would have a reason to arrange his trial.”
“Hmm?” I gave his suggestion a quick thought, and the nod I gave became a sign of agreement.
“Do what you must then,” I said calmly, and that seemed like the other thing that could make him happy.
