THE KING’S CONCUBINE

ALARA’S POV The day went like there was someone causing it to move faster. Nightfall was set, and it was time for the unprepared gathering King Darius had spoken of. From the way he had spoken about it, it seemed like the most important thing I at that moment. I had been given a well-furnished room to stay in, it was so large that I felt like I wasn’t meant to stay there alone. Two servants knocked on the door soon after and came in without waiting to hear my response. “The King sent us…” One of them said, and then together they presented the items they had come with. There was a nice dress made from silk, a nice necklace with a golden pendant, and two lovely shoes that almost looked like they were made for the Queen of the Lycans. The servants saw that I was struggling to put on the shoes, and they whispered with slight giggles when they thought I wasn’t looking. Curiously, I turned to one of them as soon as I was done and asked; “What is happening tonight? Why is everyone in a hurry?” I had observed for a while, and I heard the sound of footsteps that were marching to one particular destination like their lives depended on it. It was obvious that something very important was happening that night. “The King is going to perform the ritual.” They said in unison, as though I knew what they were talking about. “What ritual?” Of course, I was curious, very eager to know what was going on, but the servants glanced at each other and said nothing. “We have to go now. The King asked us to say nothing to you.” They left, increasing the intensity of my curiosity. For some reason, I felt like there could be a little danger, but then I was reminded of who I was. The words Lucian said to me after he saved me were stuck in my head like they were part of it. “Alara?” A whisper suddenly caused me to turn, but there was no one there. But I felt a presence, a strong one at that. I knew I wasn’t alone in the room, but then I couldn’t see anybody. I scoured, blinked, and wiped my ears to be certain that they were not deceiving me. “I am so glad that you are alive, my child.” “Mother?” I recognized her voice, but I wasn’t sure if she was the one. My mother Lysandra had been dead for a very long time, even longer than my father Blake. “You look so beautiful…” The voice was increasing, but then it seemed like it was coming from everywhere in the room. “Is this really you?” I asked, my heartbeat increasing while my breath seemed like it was decreasing. “I can see that you now dwell among the Lycans. I hope they treat you better than Silvermoon Pack.” “Why can’t I see you, mother?” I panicked a bit, still looking around in search of the particular direction where the voice was coming from. “Where are you?!” I was anxious at that moment, pacing from one place to the other but it seemed like I was in a trance. “I am right in front of you, my child. You are not just looking right.” My mother was right, and all it took was for me to stare harder, but not with ordinary eyes. I gasped! There she was, looking like she was still alive and there with me. In the euphoria of the moment, I tried to embrace her, but all I could feel was air. She chuckled softly while I stared in curiously. “I have been gone for so long, child. Yet you still act like I am still here with you.” My mother still had her smile, and seeing her made tears trickled down my face. “Don’t cry, Alara. Tears is for the weak, and you are a strong one, the strongest I know.” Her words were soothing, but then she was my strength. She was right. I didn’t need to cry at that moment. I was consoled, but I still had so many questions to ask. “Why couldn’t I fight the poison? Why couldn’t I sop them from taking the throne from me?” My mother was silent, and I was afraid that she was about to depart from me. “You are asking the wrong questions, Alara. The future ahead of you is bigger than you think. I must go now, my child. But I will always be here…” “Wait, mother! Don’t go!” I reached out at once, but she was gone, leaving me to ponder on the incomplete words she had spoken. Then I realized that she vanished because someone was walking into the room. “I was certain that I heard more than one voice.” She said, and I recognized the lady from earlier. I bumped in on her on my way out of the King’s Chambers, and she looked like me like I was a slave. She said nothing, but her eyes already told me that she wasn’t happy that I was there in the castle. “ There must be something about you…” She said, moving in circles while I stood in the middle trailing her with my eyes. Yes, she was gorgeous, but her cold demeanor stood right in front of her. I could tell that she was someone special to the King, and she had already seen me as a rival. “I asked the King to send you away, but he refused. Tell me, are you his concubine?” I was offended, but it didn’t seem like he was bothered about whatever my reaction was going to be. “Darius made a terrible choice by choosing you as a bed warmer. I thought he could do better.” She scoffed, rolling her eyes in disdain while she continued moving in circles. Suddenly she stopped, but she wasn’t done talking. “I am Seraphina. Princess of the northern tribe, and King’s future Queen. As long as you choose to remain here, you shall bow to me as future queen.” She drew the battle line, but if only she knew that I had no interest in her King. “Peasant!” She cursed, and walked away stylishly, making sure that her waist wiggled, and her shoes clanged on the hard floor
