Chapter Five

"Did you see that guy by chance?" Interrupting Annie by accident. "No, who was it?" she asked, becoming curious. "I'm not sure. Nevermind. I'm sorry for interrupting you. Could you please excuse me Annie?" "Yeah, no problem. See you later." She waved as I grabbed Lexis arm, leading her away from flirting with those guys whose names I forgot. "Hey Mira, whats going on? Are you okay?" Lexi questioned, worried about my sudden actions. "I saw someone over here. I want to try and find them again." I explained as my thoughts kept going back to the man I saw, and how he just completely disappeared. Reaching the spot he stood in, looking around, the only other direction he could've gone was down the hallway leading towards the back of Lexi's house. Without thinking, and my hand still wrapped around Lexi's arm, I started towards the hallway. "Hey Mira stop! Tell me whats going on first." Lexi demanded as she planted her feet on the ground. Snapping me from my consuming thoughts. "I'm sorry, I was in my head again. Can we just walk down this hall real quick? I want to see if I can find him." As soon as the word 'him' left my mouth. Her whole demeanor completely changed. She was excited and had a newfound release on life. "Are you lying?" "No.." "Yes!! my girl is interested in a guy! I never thought this day would come!!" "Calm down, please.. It's nothing like that. Can we please just go real quick? I'll answer any questions you have afterward. I promise." "Yes, let's go. I must see what it takes to finally catch my girls attention." Lexi was now pulling me down the hallway. The further we moved down the hall, the further the noise of the party moved from us, slowly enveloping us in an eerie silence. "Why are you looking for a random guy? I joked about you liking him. I know that's not the case. You never like anyone anyway." sighing in disappointment, as she waited for my reasoning. "I—I honestly don't know. I was talking to Annie, when–" "Who?" "One of the three girls that was in that group we just left." "Gotcha, continue." "When we were talking I got this weird sensation. My body reacted to him staring at me before I even realized I was being stared at. It was weird. I see the look on your face. It wasn't anything like that. This feeling was uncomfortable, unsettling. Why else would I get goosebumps, and the hair on my neck stand? Those are fear responses." I reasoned. "Then why would you seek him out down a dark, quiet hallway that barely ever gets used? If the feeling he gave you was fear?" "I– I don't.. I don't know. There was just something pulling me to walk down this hallway after seeing him. I'm not sure if I'm looking for him or something else. I just know I need to walk down this hall, and I didn't want to do it without you." I decided to be honest about my conflicting emotions. We stood in silence for a few seconds before she responded. A small laugh escaped her lips. "I honestly don't know how to feel about you dragging me into unknown danger." she half mockingly said, completely stunning me. I led my best friend into unknown danger without even asking her first. "I didn't think it through, I'm so sorry Lexi. Go back, I'll look myself. I can't believe I dragged you into this without thinking.." I continued to ramble, unable to stop. "Hey calm down, I was just playing. Did you forget this is my house? We're safe I promise." Hugging me, to relax me. "Girl I need you to calm down, your anxiety can stress me out sometimes." Looking back towards the party she continued. "Let's hurry, and rejoin the fun, huh?" A raw, bloodcurdling scream pierced the silence from the end of the once quiet hallway we stood in. Freezing us both in our spots. We could see the fear that instantly filled us to our cores. "L...Lexi... what.. what was that?" Whispering in fear of being heard by whatever is down there. "I don't know Mira.. Be quiet, lets go see." "What do you mean let's go see?" I angrily whispered, trying to control my volume. "That scream was filled with pain, and fear. Whoever that is needs help; we can't just walk away. Besides, this is my home. That scream came from the basement area. We don't use the basement. Why is someone down there? I need to know. You can stay, but I'm going." She was adamant, but I could also see the fear lingering right behind it. Even the brave ones have fear. "I'm coming with you, Lex." Smiling at my newfound bravery. "Good, let's go." Slowly making our way towards the basement. We could hear shushed whispers and a lot of moving around, along with what sounded like something being dragged. It felt like my body inherently knew what these sounds together meant. It was begging me to turn around and leave as fast as possible. Fighting my instincts, I continued closer with Lexi at my side. "We can't open the door, I don't want to be caught. Let's just find somewhere to hide while we wait to see who comes out." Lexi decided the safest plan for us. "Alright. What are we going to do when people come out?" "Make sure to get a good look at everyone who comes out. See if we can find the person who screamed, check on if they're okay. Make sure you pay attention to any and every detail you can so we can relay as much as possible to my parents. They'll need to know if something is happening under their roof." "Okay. Yeah, Mr. and Mrs. Grey won't let anyone get away with anything bad." Realizing we'll be safe no matter what, I settled into my hiding spot and waited for people to come out. About ten minutes went by before we heard footsteps closing in on the basement door, holding my breath in anticipation. My heart rate increased, my palms began to sweat as the door opened. My heart bottomed out at the sight in front of me. Mr. and Mrs. Grey alongside Jax, all walked out of the basement, with their hands, and shirts covered in blood. A feeling I had never felt before, even near my mother who hates my guts. Enveloped my whole being. A feeling I never once would've thought I'd feel around the people I considered to be my parents, to be my family. Primal Fear. Realizing Lexi was going to confront them. I held her back. In fear for me, and for her. Something seemed off. We never should've walked down this hall. We never should've seen this. I felt sick at the thought of them catching us. "Don't do it Lexi. Please. Something's wrong. We need to leave before we're seen." I whispered in her ear, hoping I was quiet enough not to be caught. Looking into her eyes, hoping she sees how serious I am and doesn't fight me on this. Sensing the same uneasiness I felt. She steadied herself and kept quiet while we waited for them to walk away. After a few agonizing moments, they walked off away from the partying kids, just a room away. Realizing we had both been holding our breath, we exhaled and rushed back towards the party. Praying no one had noticed our absence.
