MARCH 1941 There was a letter from my father arrived on a Saturday morning and mother sat us down so that she could read out the bits that applied to us. We nodded and settled down in the front living room and Paula wanted to know about the other bits in Dad"s letter. "They are for Mummy only," mother said, grinning. Paula asked why that should be but was told in no uncertain terms to sit there and listen to what concerned her and not worry about anything else that didn"t. Dad was getting on well it seemed and had a bit of a knack for cooking and preparing food that he didn"t know about. He wrote that he had been promoted to Corporal and was starting a training course to prepare him for work in the officer"s mess.
