JANUARY 1941 I remember the beginning of that year as a sort of settling in process. At first it was a case of getting used to a new house even if it wasn"t our own to keep. Then it was getting used to a new environment, a different way of life and all against a background of war, cruel, vicious, evil war, raging through North Africa, out in the Atlantic as our Royal Navy ships battled to escort merchant vessels safely and the personal life and death struggle of the civilian population in Britain as the German Luftwaffe tried to bomb us into extinction and the RAF Fighter Command fought to end their destruction and gain command of the air. It was getting used to a new school for me and the start of Infant school for Paula although my main memories are not of the classroom but sitting out
