JANUARY 1941 Dad returned to his unit at Aldershot after his short leave period and shortly after that he was posted to Colchester. His letters home told us he was learning all about how to shoot a rifle, use explosives and he was having to go on parades but not as much as many of the men did. Working as part of the Army Catering Corps there was constant work in the mess hall and he was learning quite a lot about cooking and food preparation. This was not though, he emphasised, an indication that he would be pursuing a career as a chef or cook or likely to indulge in a multitude of cooking operations in his own home after the war ended.
