The silence on the line was comforting this time, filled with the warmth of unspoken understanding. Jade lay back on her bed, staring at the ceiling, her heart swelling with emotions she’d held back for so long. She never imagined those three words would tumble out of her mouth, and even less that Jack would feel the same. But now, everything was different. Everything was out in the open.
Jack broke the silence, his voice soft but filled with a nervous energy that made her smile. "So... where do we go from here?"
Jade chuckled, wiping away a tear. "I guess we figure it out one day at a time. I mean, this changes things... but maybe that’s okay."
"Yeah," Jack agreed, "I don’t want to rush anything. Let’s just... let it happen naturally, you know?"
Jade sighed in relief. "Exactly. I don’t want to lose what we have, but I also don’t want to pretend these feelings don’t exist anymore."
"Same here," Jack said quietly, and she could almost hear him smiling through the phone. "But I have to admit... I’ve wanted this for a long time."
Jade’s heart skipped a beat. Hearing that made her feel like everything was finally aligning. She couldn’t stop herself from smiling. "I think I have, too. I just didn’t realize it until now."
They talked for hours, laughing about their shared memories, teasing each other about the moments when their feelings might have slipped through without them noticing. It was easy—just like it had always been—but with an added layer of excitement now that they both knew how the other felt.
Eventually, the conversation wound down, the late-night hours creeping in, and they both grew sleepy.
"Hey, Jade?" Jack asked, his voice quiet and sincere.
"Yeah?" she replied softly, already half-asleep.
"I’m really glad you told me. It feels... right."
Jade smiled, her heart fluttering at his words. "It does, doesn’t it? I’m glad, too."
"Goodnight, Jade," Jack whispered, his voice gentle.
"Goodnight, Jack," she said, feeling a sense of peace wash over her as she hung up the phone. For the first time in a long time, things felt right.
The next morning, Jade woke up with the sunlight filtering through her curtains, a warm glow spreading across her room. She sat up, her mind immediately replaying the events of the previous night. Had it all really happened? She reached for her phone, scrolling through her messages, and smiled when she saw a new one from Jack.
Jack: Morning, beautiful. Hope you slept well. Let’s grab coffee later? :)
Jade grinned at the screen, her fingers moving quickly to type a response.
Jade: Morning! I’d love that. See you at the usual spot?
She hit send, feeling a flutter of anticipation in her chest. Today would be the first day of whatever this new version of their relationship was, and despite the uncertainty, Jade felt a sense of excitement bubbling up inside her.
As she got ready for the day, her thoughts drifted back to Jayden. She wondered if she should reach out to him, apologize again, or maybe just leave things as they were. He had been kind to her in the end, and she didn’t want to hurt him further by dredging up their awkward goodbye. Maybe it’s better to just let things be, she thought, though a part of her still felt a pang of guilt.
Later that afternoon, Jade walked into the familiar coffee shop, the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee greeting her. She spotted Jack sitting in their usual corner, a wide grin spreading across his face as soon as he saw her. Her heart did a little flip, and she found herself smiling uncontrollably.
"Hey," Jack said, standing up to greet her.
"Hey," Jade replied, feeling a little shy, which was new for her when it came to Jack. But she liked it—it was the good kind of nervous.
They sat down, and for a moment, they just looked at each other, both of them grinning like fools.
"This is weird, right?" Jack finally said, laughing.
Jade laughed along with him, nodding. "Totally weird. But... I like it."
"Me too," Jack agreed, leaning forward slightly, his eyes never leaving hers. "So, what happens next?"
Jade thought about it for a moment, feeling the weight of the question. "I don’t know... but I think I’m okay with not knowing. As long as we figure it out together."
Jack smiled, reaching across the table to take her hand. "Together sounds perfect."
They spent the rest of the afternoon talking about everything and nothing, just like they always had. But now, there was something different, something deeper. Every laugh, every smile, every glance between them carried a new weight, a new meaning.
As they walked out of the coffee shop, the sun setting in the distance, Jack slipped his arm around her waist. Jade leaned into him, feeling more content than she had in a long time.
"Want to go for a walk?" Jack asked, his voice soft.
Jade nodded, smiling up at him. "Yeah, I’d love that."
And so they walked, side by side, into the unknown—together.
