Engagement Canceled
PROLOGUE
*PERSPECTIVE*
Chapter One
It was approximately eight o'clock in the morning on a Friday at the opulent Linton estate. The previous evening, the weather shifted and brought forth a storm, drenching the land before the sun appeared in the morning.
The Friday morning was filled with festivities and a sense of eliteness among the groups of people gathered. While everyone eagerly awaited the engagement, Elizabeth Linton, the sole heiress of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lintons, sat in a tranquil room of the mansion. The lady, in her early thirties, was attended to by her entourage of servants, adorning her with the finest garments in preparation for the ceremony.
Despite her captivating beauty and being the granddaughter of one of the wealthiest individuals, owning a prestigious hotel, Elizabeth remained unmarried. This was due to the heartbreaking experience she had in university, at the hands of Scott William. After that, she swore off love but eventually found herself falling for Timothy Bronte.
Said Timothy Bronte had recently been appointed as the CEO of The Mirage Hotel and Casino, adding to his list of impressive achievements.
Once the preparations were complete, Elizabeth made her way to the grand hall where the engagement was to take place. As she gazed upon the meticulous decorations, she couldn't help but exclaim, "This is stunning. I can't believe it's all for me."
Just then, the door swung open. It was Linda Maxwell, Elizabeth's childhood friend. The two had attended school together in Swaxon City, from primary up to high school. When Elizabeth's parents passed away, her grandparents took her to Alexander City, and they never had the chance to bid farewell.
"I can hardly believe she has fallen in love again," Linda mused as she entered, her black eyes darting around the lavishly decorated hall. "This is simply breathtaking," she added.
"I wish I could be the one getting engaged," Linda thought wistfully to herself.
Spotting her friend hiding nearby, she hurried over and enveloped her in a warm embrace. She peppered her cheek with five or six kisses before taking a step back and exclaiming, "Thank God you're here! I'm so happy to see you."
Linda couldn't help but burst into laughter. "You're acting like such a child lately," she teased. "Have you forgotten that today is your engagement day?"
"It doesn't matter," Elizabeth dismissed with a wave of her hand. "Come on, let me show you around." She looped her arm through Linda's and led her to explore the venue.
As they walked, Linda paused to admire the beautiful flowers decorating the hall. "Just wow, this is so beautiful," she gushed.
"Come here, Linda, meet my cousin Victoria," Elizabeth said, introducing them to each other. "Shake hands, Victoria," she instructed with a smile.
Then, Elizabeth gave Linda a tour of the building, showing her all the different rooms and features. They caught up on each other's lives and talked like two sisters who hadn't seen each other in years.
"I think you're running a little late for your engagement," Linda pointed out with a chuckle. "You should go ahead, I'll be right behind you."
As the minutes ticked by, Timothy and Elizabeth prepared to exchange the engagement rings. With a smile, Timothy took Elizabeth's hand and prepared to put the ring on her finger. But then, everything changed as Elizabeth's eyes met Scott William's across the room.
Elizabeth's body trembled, struck with shock and her heart raced in response. She couldn't believe what was before her, unable to reconcile the reality with her own eyes.
"Elizabeth, is this a dream?" She chastised herself, trying to calm her nerves but failing.
"You?" She shrieked, boiling with rage, her demeanor instantly changed as she charged towards him, unleashing a fierce barrage of slaps that silenced the entire hall.
*Minutes later*
The hall was abuzz with murmurs and confusion, none of them expecting such audacity and disrespect from her.
"Unbelievable behavior!" One exclaimed.
"Is this the woman Timothy Bronte wants to marry?" Another questioned rhetorically.
"What are you doing here?" Elizabeth screamed, turning her furious gaze towards Scott.
Bang! Boom! Bang! Elizabeth delivered a powerful kick at Scott, following it up with rapid jabs.
"How dare you show your repulsive face? How dare you step foot here?" She continued to pummel him, with even more force.
A group of people quickly rushed in and restrained her, preventing her from causing more harm to Scott.
"Let me go! Let go of me!" She screamed, but her pleas fell on deaf ears as they held her tightly.
In front of her stood Scott William, her former college mate who had proposed to her at Elysian University, promising to marry her. But he soon abandoned her after discovering she was pregnant.
He left her for other girls on campus, claiming that she had become old and unattractive.
"What does he want after tricking, using, and leaving me?" Elizabeth fumed in her mind. "He allowed me to suffer all the pains and lose my first child. What now?."
"Elizabeth," a voice from behind called out. It was her grandmother, Susan, in her early eighties. She had been taking care of Elizabeth since she lost her parents.
"What is the cause of this sudden change? Why are you engulfed in tears, as if swimming in a sea of distress? You were brimming with joy before, but now..." She paused, turning to face Scott.
"Excuse me, young man. Who are you? And what have you done to Elizabeth to provoke such a drastic change in her countenance?" she questioned sternly.
"Scott, can you please speak? Grandma Susan asked you a question. Have you suddenly lost your ability to hear? I see, you are incapable of speaking, is that it?" she continued with frustration.
"Grandma," Elizabeth managed to call, trying to control her temper.
"This fiend," her temper flared up again as she looked into Scott's eyes. She was consumed with anger, ready to strike him down like a flame if given the chance.
"He is a wicked monster."
"I feel like strangling him to death," Elizabeth said, attempting to grab Scott's neck and squeeze the life out of him, but she was held back.
"Leave me alone!" she screamed. "He deserves to die, not live."
She ran towards Scott, pushing him away with all her might.
"Get out. I don't want to see you!" she yelled.
Elizabeth paused and glared at Scott, her face twisted in anger. She then turned her gaze to Grandma.
"Grandma," she continued, her anger evident in every word. "He tricked, deceived, used, and discarded me," she pointed angrily at Scott.
"Elizabeth, is this all some kind of dramatic performance?" Timothy, who was also seething with anger, mustered the courage to ask, trying to protect his reputation.
He approached Elizabeth and wrapped his finger around her frail bones. "Please, tell me this isn't true. Tell me you didn't have an affair with him while in university." Tears welled up in his eyes like a child scolded by his father.
"Elizabeth," Timothy called out, his voice trembling with emotion.
"Why?" he questioned, tears streaming down his face. "Why did you keep this from me for so long? You know how much I love you, but this....", he broke down, reaching for a handkerchief to wipe away his tears.
"Where is this young man from originally?" one of the disinterested guests asked nonchalantly, taking a sip of wine.
"I don't know," came the reply from behind.
"I can't take this anymore, I just can't. I have been humiliated enough," Timothy declared, digging into his pocket for his car keys and driving off in his two-million-dollar Mercedes Benz.
As Timothy Bronte drove away, so did all the other guests, leaving behind a disappointed and dissatisfied atmosphere.
The entire hall was now occupied only by Scott, Elizabeth, and her grandparents.
Furiously, Elizabeth stormed towards Scott.
"Are you happy now? Huh?" she shouted, poised to slap him, but something stopped her mid-air.
"Don't you even think about it," a voice warned from behind her.
The voice sounded eerily familiar to Elizabeth.
"This voice sounds too familiar," she thought to herself, whipping around to see who the speaker was.
"You!" Elizabeth screamed in great astonishment.
She just couldn't believe her ears and eyes. Why was that person there?
