Last School Year
Rena watched as a group of students walked inside their classroom. She knew their faces too well and their reputation precedes them. A bunch of troublesome boys with no future. Why do they have to be in the same class in her last high school year? She could have enjoyed this last year but here she was, quietly contemplating if she should ask their homeroom teacher to transfer her to another class. She clenched her jaw. Her bestfriends are here so moving to another class is not even a viable option.
This is annoying, she thought.
She felt the whole class stiffened as the tallest guy asked their classmate to give up his seat. Do all these good-for-nothing boys always prefer the seats at the back? For what? For the view? To avoid the teachers? Their classmate gritted his teeth but moved on to another seat without a fight.
"Thanks," said the tallest guy.
Rena paused and regarded him curiously. Who would have thought he could be polite if he wanted to. What was his name again?
"That's Von," said Lia.
Rena turned her head. Lia beamed at her and nudged her arm playfully. "Stop staring. They said he'll date you if he caught you looking."
Right. Von. The playboy. He was caught cheating last year and was said to change his girlfriend every three months or so. And right next to him was another popular face. Alex. He wore a bored expression about his face as he rested his chin on his palm.
"They look so good," Lia went on. "If only they weren't--"
"Troublesome," Rena interrupted.
"I meant to say taken."
"Seriously?"
Lia rubbed her nose. "Nah. I'm just kidding." She looked away and sighed.
Rena thought she was being strange but their teacher arrived and started their class with the usual announcement. New seating arrangement. Each of them picked up a piece of paper and based on the written number, they were assigned their new seats.
To her uttermost despair. Rena found herself assigned to one of the seats at the back. Contrary to general opinion, this place gets more attention from the teachers than the ones sitting in the front seats. It's like the teachers' eyes are magnetized to glance at this area all the time to see if they were up to no good. Rena wasn't worried she'd get into any sort of trouble but still, this wasn't ideal.
But the gods must have thought she's played it safe in all her sixteen years of existence. She stared in disbelief as Alex took the seat on her right and Von on her left. She nodded impassively as the two boys sat down. But a small voice inside her head was screaming.
She must be in hell.
