The end of the world...
That thought seemed to be on everybody's mind that summer. After everything that happened it was no surprise, but little did we know that the horible plague which killed a quartet of Earth's population was only the begining.
The scientists called it the DFA virus, Death From Above, and there was no cure. They struggled for months to come up with an antidote, while people kept getting infected, but to no succes. It started with the older ones and the ones who had other diseases, making it's way to the children and eventually the rest of the people.
Nobody was safe. Everytime you went outside to get groceries or to go about your day, you risked exposure for yourself and the people around you. No one knew where it came from, but it slowly made it's way to every country untill we all went into lockdown. No more travelling abroad, no more leaving your home unless for emergencies. Goodbye school, goodbye parties, goodbye social life, goodbyr fun. It went like this for a couple of months and miraculously it worked. As summer came, the virus vanished like it never existed.
At first, people couldn't believe it. Could what seemed like the Apocalypse be really over? Did God truly forgave us and gave us a second chance at life? Whatever happened we were finally safe, or what was left of us, and life kept it's course. Adults went back to work, kids went back to school to recover the time they lost and everyone of us tried to forget. And i suppose people did eventually, untill the actual apocalypse came.
It was the end of summer when my life took an unexpexted turn. Now i know what you're thinking: "Oh my, that's the night she met her true love, a hot guy with a golden heart" or something along those lines. I'm sorry to dissapoint you, but that's not how this story goes. The truth is much more sadder than that. I guess i was actually lucky, but i didn't see it that way at the moment. I mean who would've?
So it went like this... I was în the car with three of my closest friends. We were going home from our graduation party. After everything that happened highschool was over and all of us were gonna go to college în a month. I know, not much of a break, but we all had enough of that during the lockdown. I was singing at the top of my lungs with the girls while Hunter was driving and trying really hard not to join us. He and Neal were our designated drivere tonight, so they were sober, but i would lie if i said the rest of us were.
"Crap! Someone call the others." Hunter says all of a sudden.
"Why? What happened?" I ask while i dial Becca's number.
"I'm getting pulled over..."
Now that was bad luck. All of us have been illegally drinking and we were surely going to get arrested. There was no way we could get out of this considering that our car probably smelled like an old liquor store. The police officer stops next to Hunter's window and he pulls it down with a big, innocent, smile on his face.
"Hello, officer! How can we help you?"
"Good evening kids! Young man, you were... Whoa..." the officer, probably registering the smell for the first time, took a step back, then he looked all of us over. "Alright. I'm going to need the four of you to step out of the car" he paused for a moment, glanceing in the direction of the other stopped car in front of ours. "Are those friends of yours?"
No one answered him because those were indeed our friends waiting to see what happenes. Needless to say, he took our silence as a yes and headed in their direction while we got out of the car and soon, the rest joined us.
"Ok. I need to check your IDs, and while i do that why don't you tell me where you've been?"
Dead silence. We just looked at one another. It was obvious we were coming from a party because of our clothes, but we couldn't just tell him that. We couldn't lie either, it would only get us in more trouble. The officer looked up from the device he was using to run our IDs through the database when he saw that none of us was uttering a single word. He opened his mouth to say something when his device beeped.
"It looks like it's your lucky day, kids. You're not getting arrested." He said after a few moments.
We all breathed a sigh of relief at hearing that. I didn't know what message he got on that device, whatever it was, but we just dodged a really close bullet and i was so very grateful to whatever force from the skies made it happen.
"However" he continued, and we all froze. "You need to come back with me to the police stadion. There is nothing to be worried about, just a little detour on your way home to film up some paperwork."
"If we're not getting arrested, then what's the paperwork for?" asked Hunter.
The officer's face turned into an angry expression. Oh this was not good... Luckyly Daniel pitched in to calm everybody.
"Dude, stop! Just take the win and let it go." he turned to the officer "We will follow you in our cars, sir. Thank you for letting our little mishap slide. We appreciate it."
The officer nodded in his direction and headed to his car while the rest of us did the same. We rode in silence all the way to the local police station where we were put in an interogation room and told to wait.
"Am i the only one who finds this whole situation a little weird?" I asked the group after 15 minutes of waiting. "I mean, it's like we are in some weird horror movie and are about to get killed. And also, are you guys this tired too? I feel like i could close my eyes and instantly go to sleep..."
"Not that you wouldn't do that every night" Clarisse joked. "But yeah, i'm tired too. And it is werid, what's taking them so long? I want to go..."
I couldn't listen to her anymore. I felt my eyelids getting heavier and heavier, and before i knew it, i made my way to dreamland. Little did i know, that i was going to be there for a really long time.
