Chapter 1
"Myrell!" I heard a series of knocking at my door accompanied by a really loud voice. Who would that be? Too obvious to tell. I jolted out of bed and with eyes still closed, walked straight to the door. “Mom, what’s wrong?” I asked. Though it sounded more like a complain than a question. Who would be happy anyway? She just ruined my sleep! Also, the fact that she’s knocking on my door like she meant to destroy it. “What’s wrong? You’re asking me that? Do you know what time is it?” She was shouting at me. I looked at how her mouth moved and wondered how she never get tired of nagging. It’s too early to have that energy. "Mom, it is not healthy to shout at your daughter as early as this morning. Don't you know that according to the study by psychiatrists at a hospital affiliated to Harvard Medical School, shouting can significantly and permanently alter the structure of the child's brain," I told her. I just read that last night at the internet, it’s really useful. I’m busy digging some trivia and facts since I finished reading all the books at my shelves and even the ones I borrowed from the library. I'm a fan of science and I don't really believe in things that can never be explained. Well, except God, but on mythical creatures and spirits? Nah, unless they can present to me a reliable data that states that they do exist. To see is to believe anyway. "Stop lecturing me with the things that I don’t know and start moving instead!" she replied. Among all the people around me, my mom is the hardest one to convince. "Mom, it is not called lecture, it is a fact. There is a big difference between the two," I said, "and I'm still sleepy. Everything that is taught in school can be read in books too. So, what’s the use?" I stepped back and was about to turn around but her big arm prevented me. Yeah, I have a chubby mother, but she is still beautiful inside and out. Where would I inherit my good qualities, right? “Do you want me to hit you with a stick? Rohama, you are already in your senior years and still, you’re too lazy to go to school. You prefer staying at your room and read the whole day. Do you want me to call someone so you and your books could get married?” she stated. I stared at her intently, straight at her brown eyes. She was serious as her face never moved a muscle. If that was possible, maybe she has done it a long time ago. Mayi Myrrel, my mother is a tough woman and I’ve witnessed that so many times so winning over her is a hard task. But, is there anything wrong with it? I just loved books since they are really informative, especially about science. I just find it so amazing, the technologies and experiments, they are indeed the best! I don't actually read fantasy like myths or legends. There is no proof that they exist, no trace of evidences only guesses and imagination. Come on, people should face reality and let not children believe into something that doesn't authentically subsist. They are just the work of man's imagination, webbed and told creating a massive fallacy in the minds of some who just keep on accepting everything they heard. Shallow thinking, isn't it? And they say, people like us who don't believe in fantasy tend to have a boring life. Huh, little did they know that we love solving mysteries that is undeniably existing rather than spending our time in such fictitious matter. "Can I skip class today? I’m not feeling well,” I told her. I crinkled my eyes since I felt it getting tired. What time did I sleep last night? Almost one in the morning, no wonder I feel worn out. I got engrossed with the book I'm reading. It was about adaptation thingy entitled 'Selfish Gene' written by Richard Dawkins. "It’s your first day of school, why won’t you attend?" she asked. I clicked my tongue and simply rolled my eyes. What is there in school that I should be excited about? I don’t belong there. They say I'm weird and creepy because sometimes everything that flows out of my mouth is too hard for them to comprehend. They usually talk about themselves and how pretty they could get. It wasn’t a place for me, I’m like a stranger. I only we have enough money, I would never study there. "Mom, Don't you know that brilliant people tend to be lazy because they would rather spend much time thinking than doing?" I said. I’ll try one more time maybe she’d let me go this time. However, her wrinkled temple made me realize that I don’t stand a chance. "Tsk, I'm dead serious mom, newest research came from Florida Gulf Coast University. People like us do little physical effort because we are bound to think and not to do. Kidding, the last sentence is just a joke but believe me mom," I pleaded. Yeah, it may sound odd why I don't like going to school, I just don’t feel like it was a place for me. People would stare at me like I'm an alien. I just learned everything from the books I’m reading and I wanted to share it to them, but they’d always get the wrong impression. It turns out that I am boasting my intelligence and I am underestimating them. "uh uh, not today, Rohama. Go get yourself ready cause I am not taking any of your excuses,” she said. The next thing I heard is a big heavy footsteps walking away. I heaved a sigh, and another, and then another. I did it a couple of times. Tsk, why am I born like this anyway? I can't find my own circle of friends or maybe, I'm destined to be alone. Tsk! Scratch that, destiny doesn't exist too. I looked around my room and found it a mess. My things are scattered everywhere. I’ll just fix that tomorrow. I have no friends that goes for a night over so no need to arrange my room. Oh, here comes self-pity again, so even before I over think, I took my towel and undies and went straight to the bathroom. I’ll shower before my mom comes back and really hit me with a stick. After taking a bath I went straight to the dining area where our breakfast is already served. In reality, our home is just an average kind of house. We have three small rooms, one for me, one for my mother and one for my older brother. There is only three of us, I considered my dad dead a long time ago and I don’t want to remember or even talk about him. "Mom? Noodles?" I asked. My eyebrows are meeting at the middle upon seeing the food that is serve on our table. Hey, I’m not picky but this is not healthy. "Do you have anything to say again?" she responded. "Mom! Noodles contains high amounts of sodium, food additives, petroleum by-products, bad cholesterol and no fiber and nutrition at all. This won't do good to our bodies, especially our stomachs," I explained. Her temple creased, and she looks more like a bulldog. "Rohama, we don’t eat instant food every day, it was just today so stop over reacting. You won’t die so start eating!” it sounded like an order and I think it was really an order. "Do you make a list of the food we are eating? Can you insert the vitamins, minerals and even bad cholesterols. . . " I stopped speaking. She was staring at me badly, so I started eating instead. I'll just drink a lot of water after this to cleanse my body from all the bad stuffs.
