Chapter 01
Tessa’s pov
“Have I told you, you look stunning today my beautiful Alpha.” Dean, my mate and one true love, said, pecking me on the cheek as I felt butterflies in my belly.
"Where are you taking me?" I ask purely out of curiosity, blushing like a teenager.
"If I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise now would it love?" He laughs. A smile parted my lips as he led me out of the pack house, his warm hands covering my eyes like a blindfold making it hard for me to see anything but the dark. I breathe in my mate's familiar scent of wood and daisies as it warms up my insides.
"We're here." Dean suddenly halts my steps and slowly retracts his hands from my eyes. "Now open your eyes," he whispers into my ears and I obey as soon as he gives the order. The first thing my eyes saw when they opened was the brand new Ferrari that sat beautifully at the parking lot.
Fucking hell! He got me a car.
"Happy birthday Tessa!" Dean wraps his arms around my waist pulling me closer to him, my whole body tingles from his touch and I could feel my wolf, Lyra, purr in my head. "Hope you like it."
"Like it? I love it!" I turned around to plant a kiss on his lips. "I love you, Dean. I love you so much."
"And I love you too, even more now that you're expecting my pup. I'm gonna be a dad!" Dean grinned with happiness, placing a hand on my belly. I could almost have sworn I felt my baby move the second it felt Dean's fatherly touch.
"I can't wait, little one," Dean whispered. I could feel the change within me. A life was inside of me. This child was of Lockwood's blood. My blood. He would continue my withering bloodline. I couldn't help but remember how happy Dean had been when I shared the news of my pregnancy with him. He couldn't contain his joy. The man was beyond elated, I could see it in his eyes, he'd been dreaming of this day his whole life – to become a father. I knew him better than anyone else.
"How about we go somewhere quiet, just the two of us." Dean said, grabbing me gently by the hand. "I've prepared another surprise I'm sure you're gonna love."
"Ooh I love it already." I smiled, licking my lips. I get weak in the knees whenever he touches me.
"Great, I'll teach you how to drive this new baby." Dean tossed me the keys from his jacket.
"Oh s**t, I can't. I promised Sienna I'd help her prepare dinner tonight." I frowned, tossing the keys back as it dawned on me.
"Well your cousin can get help from the kitchen servants, tonight it's going to be just me and you having the time of our lives. You want that right?"
"Yes, but... I still have Alpha duties to attend to…" Dean places a finger on my lips to shut me up.
"I'm not taking no for an answer my darling Alpha, it's your birthday and you have the right to enjoy it. Moreover, you have Stefan, a Beta who is more than capable of handling the pack affairs for the meantime."
"I guess so," I tell myself after a minute of thinking before moving towards my new car. It's so beautiful. I've always wanted to own such a beautiful car but my father, the previous Alpha of Nightshade pack always had the belief that a woman's role in life was building a home and not behind the wheels so I buried any thoughts that didn't correspond with my father's views. Well, all that changed when I met my mate, Dean. He made me see the world in a different light, made me bolder, more outspoken and a bit rebellious. He changed me for the better. And for the first time in years I got the courage to disobey my father. Although Dean was my fated mate, my father never did approve of our affair. I never once understood why he despised Dean so much with an undying passion. It seemed like the more I tried to amend their broken relationship, the more my father's hatred for Dean intensified. And that's when I left him with an ultimatum, It was either he accepted Dean as my mate or he was going to lose me forever. I knew my father wasn't going to abandon me, his only child, knowing without me the Lockwood lineage would be over. He needed me to continue the family's legacy, so he accepted my terms but only if I promised never to appoint Dean as Alpha when the title became vacant, he rather saw me, a woman become the next alpha than allow Dean lead the pack. That was how much my father hated Dean. I only agreed to carry out his request because Dean asked me to, unlike my father he wanted to put an end to their conflict, he didn't want to put me in a tight situation or tear me further apart from my father.
"What are you thinking of now?" Dean snaps his fingers in an attempt to bring my attention back to him. It worked by the way.
"Uh... It's nothing. So where are we heading to?" A smile stretches out on Dean's face as I ask the question.
"Paradise my love."
****
"Are we there yet?" I asked, feeling a bit anxious.
"We're almost there, love." Dean answered, sparing me a glance before focusing his eyes on the windy road. It's now been over an hour since we left the pack house and I couldn't help but wonder if we made the right decision. I clutched my necklace nervously, staring out the window. Something didn't feel right. Something awful was about to happen. My mind flashed back to the day my father was murdered in a rogue attack, I had the same feeling then. I tried to shake it off, to tell myself it was just my imagination, but deep down, I knew something was wrong. And now, as I rode in the car with Dean, that same feeling was back. It was as if my instincts were screaming at me, warning me of an impending doom.
"Dean... why don't we just head back home." I said, breaking the silence. Dean's gaze flicked towards me, his eyes filled with concern.
"What's wrong? Are you feeling sick?"
I hesitated, unsure of what I was feeling.
"I don't know...I just have this feeling. Something awful is going to happen."
Dean's expression softened, and he reached out to take my hand.
"Relax, everything's fine." His words were assuring but they did little to ease my anxiousness as my nose picked up an unfamiliar scent...I could smell...rogues. Rogues!
"Dean!" I screamed when I saw something rush out of f*****g nowhere. It was a wolf—a silver wolf, running straight towards us at a speed of light. I think it wanted to... crash into us!
Noooo!
