Chapter One
Freya’s POV
I looked at myself in the mirror for what seemed like the hundredth time. My bright smile was an indication of the excitement I felt.
It'd been two months since my mate had gone on his usual business trip, but this time felt like an eternity and I had missed him terribly. Being in the human world meant he had to work ,and stay away from me for months, which felt like an eternity at that point.
I couldn't complain, I can't complain, because we needed the money to take care of ourselves and our unborn pups.
Taking one last look at my outfit, which was a sleeveless bodycon in his favorite color, red, paired with the red diamond earrings he had gifted me on my last birthday and my wavy blonde hair was delicately styled into a neat messy bun, adding to my beautiful look. I was satisfied with how I looked and felt.
I headed to the dining area as I awaited his arrival. I put on his favorite music for extra special effects as tonight was indeed a special night. Just the thoughts made my heart race rapidly with joy.
In a few minutes, the door opened, and he walked in. Twelve years it had been, and he still managed to make my heart flutter at every sight of him.
My Almighty Rowan Vale! A Scottish prince but built, smelt and walked like a powerful Greek god, and he was all mine. So exquisitely gorgeous despite looking tired. He was unreal and completely mine to keep and hold…
How much more lucky can I be?
“Hey darling, Welcome home.” I said, walking over to him as I gave him a gentle kiss on the cheek as I was trying not to crush him with my excitement and all that.
He smiled back, hugging me briefly before setting down his briefcase.
“Hmm, you look extra lovely tonight. What is the occasion?”
“Oh, thanks and nothing really. "Just thought of doing something really special for you.” I said, smiling shyly and inwardly grateful that he had noticed my effort.
My wolf could feel that he was in a sour mood, so I kept trying to elevate it.
“You really didn't have to, but thank you, Frey,” he said fondly, making me blush even harder.
“It is good to be home. By the way, something smells really good. You cooked?”
“Yes I did, and it's your favorite” I beamed, leading him to the dining area as I served him a plate of Aberdeen Angus beef, served with a side of roasted garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed wild mushrooms with some Cranachan on the side.
Too much, a stranger might think, but I felt it wasn't enough for my Rowan.
“Wow, this must have taken a lot of effort to prepare. Thanks again, you spoil me so much. "What would I be able to do without you?” Rowan asked, and I blushed.
“My pleasure, your majesty.” I bowed mockingly. “Enough with the pleasantries, Eat!”
We sat down to eat, chatting lively about his trip and my day.
But as we ate the meal in our lively chatter, my wolf couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. He seemed distracted and slightly tense, and his eyes kept drifting away from mine as we talked.
I inwardly scolded myself for always being so pessimistic and that he was just tired from his trip. We finished dinner and I poured us two glasses of wine.
“I have something to tell you.’” We both said at the same time, laughing out loud as we realized the coincidence.
“You go first.” I gestured to him with a soft smile, but as I stared into his eyes I felt a deep sinking feeling in my chest. My wolf whimpered, signaling that something bad was about to happen.
His expression was serious and heavy, with guilt and sympathy. The next few words he was about to utter were going to change my world, as I have known it for good.
“So I met Daphne on my trip,” he said, stopping as he stared deeply into my eyes.
I couldn't read his mind as he had blocked the mindlink from me, heightening my curiosity.
“Ohh that's great news, how is she doing? "" You must have been really happy to see her,” I replied, trying to sound as polite as I could be at the mention of his first love and childhood friend.
“Ummm yhhh but…that's not all, Frey. ”He replied, his voice suddenly looking low.
“She’s coming back, and I think it's high time we got a Divorce. I can't stay away from my mate.”
I felt like I'd been punched in the guts as the word divorce kept ringing loudly in my head.
All I could do was stare at him, as I got lost in the feeling of emptiness that plagued my mind.
“Freya,” he called with a hint of concern in his voice.
“Are you alright?”
“Sure.” My voice came out so cut and sharper than I had intended, heavy with emotions and words unspoken.
He frowned back at me, his once concerned gaze now filled with confusion and surprise.
“I know it's a lot to take in, but I promise to make the whole process quiet and easy, and I assure you that this will never stop my duty towards you as a brother and friend.”
“Bullshit !” I said as I let out a sardonic laughter. At this point, I sounded crazy. Maybe I was. I couldn't tell.
“When do we sign the papers? I want them as soon as possible”
“Wow, you sound very cold. You know, this is nothing personal right and, according to our signed agreements, this was going to happen eventually.”
Of course! How could I have forgotten that I was merely a pawn in his sick game to appease his grandmother! All the time we spent together, the moments we had shared, especially that drunken night before his trip that had changed my life for good, all meant absolutely nothing than just an agreement .
“Let me know when I can get the papers, so I can run it through with my lawyers.”
“My assistant will bring them tomorrow. " Let me know if you need anything okay?” he said softly before announcing his early departure to bed.
This was my cue that dinner was over, and I began heading towards the guest room instead of the master bedroom we shared.
Unexpectedly, he blocked my path.
“And where do you think you are going?”
“Away from you, and to be precise, the guest room, obviously we are to be divorced, and I wouldn't want to be in the same bed with someone else's mate,” I said, stepping away from him.
“Don't you think that's a bit too much? Look I know this must be so hard on you right now and shocking too.” He said softly, holding my hand..
“But I still want to be here for you like I've always been. Don't make me worry about you”
“Of course!” I scoffed, snatching my hand away from him in anger and hate.
“It's always about you, Rowan, just leave me the heck alone and let me go to bed in peace! Also," You don't get to tell me what to do, OK? " You just lost that right.” I snapped, as I made my way once again to the guest room.
He again moves to block me, this time holding me by the neck.
“Ohh yes I do! And you know why? " I am still your husband and, until the papers say otherwise, you are MINE. Is that clear?”
“Yee…. Yes it is”, I stuttered, completely flustered by his possessiveness.
“Good girl”
And before I could argue any further, he lifted me into his arms and carried me into our room. I move to take the couch, but he drags me back into his arms, pinning me to the bed.
“Don't move another inch, you don't want to know what I could do to you.”
I could feel his wolf's dominance creeping out, and I got stilled to avoid triggering it.
He whispered into my ears with a tone so dangerous that it left me stunned in silence.
In a couple of minutes, I could hear the steady beating of his heart against my back, which meant he was asleep.
I was finally alone. Alone with my thoughts, my worries, my fears…fears of now and the future. What is going to happen to me and our child?
I subconsciously rub my belly as fresh tears stream down my face. Do I tell him? But how? I'm not even sure he remembers that night we shared. What if he thinks I'm trying to trap him into staying with me?
No! I won't do that. I'm stronger than that and my child deserves better than a cold, distant father who is in love with another…
Neither do I want a mate who would be in love with another.
