As Emily awoke, her world was a blur of pain and confusion. It was as if her body had been squeezed beneath a mountain, and her head throbbed to the point of bursting. She opened her eyes gingerly, groggily seeking her bearings, but everything around her was dark, relieved only by the smell of smoke and refuse. She could not move. Her limbs were like lead, and her chest ached where her two memories of effort-and each breath was difficult.
