When Alpha Reign stepped out of the room, I called my house from the cell phone that she had left on my bed. My family’s landline is the only number I could think of quickly, so I dialed it, listened to the ring, and waited for someone to pick up.
“Hello?” I heard my dad say.
“Hey dad,” was all I got out and I could hear a sigh of relief on the other end of the phone before he spoke.
“Sweetheart I am so glad that you are okay. I was so worried about you,” he said. “Please tell me you’re safe, there are still wolves circling the woods looking for you.”
“Yes dad, I am safe and at Blood River,” I pause and take in a breath. “This is hard for me to say but dad I want to stay here.” I say quickly feeling the need to just rip off the band aid so to speak. There was then a long moment of silence before my dad sighed again.
“Honestly honey I think that’s best, we love you and we want you here, but I have a feeling this may have to do with your birth mother. After you managed to get away the other night, we got a threatening letter and to add to the trouble your brother and I looked around after the attack and we got to thinking. There’s honestly just no way that, that many rouges could get into our territory without help from the inside,” my father replied.
I wanted to breathe a sigh of relief because he wasn’t mad at me, but I was troubled by this new information. “Thank you for the update dad, this is alpha Reign’s phone number so if you need to update us at any point feel free to call.” I said knowing he would worry less if he could reach out, “And dad you should know I am safe here; Silva says we are meant to be here with Alpha Reign, and I trust her judgement.”
“Thanks baby girl that means a lot, I’ll update you if I learn more. Would you like me to bring you some of your stuff?” He asked, “I could meet you at the border, where you crossed at, and give it to you and it would allow you to cut ties with the pack while there.” His suggestion made sense, I needed to cut ties to accept Blood River.
“Yeah, I will see if Reign is willing to take me tomorrow afternoon.”
“No,” he said quickly. “It needs to be tonight after dark, the sooner the better. I will meet you at the border at night fall. We don’t know who in the pack is involved, but it must be someone with some kind of influence, especially to get that many rouges in to attack. Cut ties tonight and accept her pack immediately, they are a large pack and very strong; they can protect you.” My dad was practically begging at this point.
“All good points dad, I will be there tonight. I promise now I have to go I love you.”
“Love you too, see you tonight,” dad said as I hung up the phone.
I now had butterflies in my stomach what have I gotten myself into?
“Don’t worry Vanessa, you are stronger than you think,” Silva encouraged me, and I couldn’t help but smile it was nice to have someone who believed in me and was always with me.
Alpha Reign came back in the room with a big smile plastered on her face and in that moment, I knew that I was leaving the hospital tonight even before she spoke.
“I will be here to pick you up in my jeep after dinner,” she said.
“Thank you Alpha-”
“No, just call me Reign please,” she said, and I could feel a beautiful friendship beginning.
“My dad wants me to meet him after nightfall at the border to cut ties and get my stuff,” I told her.
“I am willing to do that but why the cloak and dagger? And where on the border?”
“My dad says whoever attacked is working with someone in the pack to get me, so I need to do this quickly and in the dark.” I reply and I can tell she is thinking carefully about this.
“Alright, deal, we will protect you. I don’t want you worrying about that.” She replied after a moment of silence, and I could tell she was a little worried but also confident in her answer.
As promised Reign was here in her yellow Jeep Wrangler at a little after 8 but she brought a couple guys with her to get me which had me feeling a little nervous.
“Hey Nessa, how are you doing? Ready to go?” She asked and I laughed a little, “What?” she asked.
“I dig the nickname,” I said laughing again. “Who are these two?” I asked.
“This is Levi,” she said motioning to the guy to her right that stood about 6-foot tall, with a muscular build and curly blonde hair. “And this is Andrew,” she said motioning to the guy to her left who was also had a muscular build but was shorter than Reign. He had dark brown hair that was cut into a fade along the sides and a little longer on top and combed back. “They are two of our top warriors here and they are coming with us to ensure our safety tonight,” Reign said.
“Well, I am ready when you are,” I replied, and I got up.
The ride in the jeep is nice, we listen to music and Reign, and I sing along while the two warriors sit in the back quietly playing on their phones. We ride to the edge of the woods where we first came out of when Reign found me, and we park along the road and climb out.
“Alright Nessa, after we get to where I found you, you will have to take lead. Now these two will remain with us at all times but they are going to creep around in wolf form so that if anyone tries to attack us, they can catch the attacker off guard and link for help if need be.” Reign explained as the two warriors stripped behind us and shifted.
The warriors went into the woods first and we followed. When we entered the woods, the wolves were already out of sight, so we followed the path to where Reign found me. “Okay Nessa, lead from here. If you’re unsure, then let Silva guide you.” Reign instructed and stepped back to let me examine where to go next.
Silva instructed me every step of the way until we got to the border where I could see my father waiting with a box of my stuff, sitting right across the river. “Do not cross the river or they will sense your presence on the pack lands,” Silva warned me and to my surprise my dad was already a step ahead of her, he crossed through the river and set my stuff on the land at his feet and put his hands up to show he meant no harm.
“No need for that sir,” Reign said as we came closer until we are standing close enough to have a conversation.
“Thank you, dad, I love you,” I said.
“No need to thank me sweety, I love you too,” he said to me before turning to Reign. “Protect her please, if she inherited anything from her mom, she may be a powerful witch and please don’t let her use her powers for evil like her mom.”
“I will do my best sir,” Reign replied.
“Okay sweety give me a hug and cut your ties. I’d love to prolong this but it’s not safe.” I did as he said, and we hugged. I saw a few tears escape his eyes as he turned away to recross the river.
Reign picked up my box of stuff and turned to go back from where we came, “Take your time, I’m not in any hurry and you are still protected but as soon as your ties are cut we need to bail because everyone will feel the loss of a pack member. I don’t think anyone is out here to chase after us other than your father who gave his blessing, but I could be wrong.” She said and then walked into the cover of the trees away from the riverbank.
I was glad she was letting me have this moment alone, I took a few seconds to take in the peaceful night. After a few moments of silence pass I recite the words, “I Vanessa Ranae Miller cut all ties that bind me to the White Oak pack and choose to live my life as a rouge for the rest of my days or until another pack accepts me as their own.” Once I finish, I hear howls erupt from the woods in front of me and I turn around and run to catch up with Reign.
Once we get back to the jeep we climb in and wait for the 2 warriors to dress.
“How are you feeling?” Reign asks
“Odd but free,” I said. “I don’t feel held back or like I am in anyone’s shadow.”
“Once we get to the house, I will welcome you to the pack before I show you up to your room.” Reign assured me and in return I give her a polite smile and she starts the jeep while the 2 warriors climb in and buckle up.
