I follow the smell for a little bit until I hit the edge of our little town and realize that it is coming from the woods that surround us. I strip down and shift into Ivory, she is a pure white wolf with piercing blue eyes, and she is quite large. As a matter of fact, she is the biggest female wolf anyone I know has ever seen but that is because I am an alpha. In human form I am about 5’8 but as Ivory I am easily 6-foot-tall measuring from the ground to the top of my head.
I make a mental note of where my clothes are and I mind link my father, “Dad, I am on the edge of town heading into the woods to the West. I smell a rouge and it is either injured or it has attacked someone else.”
“Okay,” He linked back “just one?” he asked and then said “I’ll meet you over there” before I could even reply.
I continued to follow the scent for a few moments, and it continued to grow stronger. I crouched low and peered through fallen leaves and branches. I was now a short distance from a small greyish colored female wolf that was covered in mud, leaves, and appeared matted. She was curled up licking her hind leg where she appeared to have a decent sized wound.
“We should save her,” Ivory says to me
“Save her from what?” I ask her. I mean it is obvious to both of us she is injured but we don’t know why, she could betrayed her pack and have been expelled from them.
“We can trust her,” Ivory says to me, knowing what I am thinking as we are of one mind.
I approached the rouge slowly, and she takes no notice of me until I am inches from her face. When she notices me, she begins to growl and turns to face me. Once she's face to face with me, she bows her head to show submission, and I can only assume it is because of my size and alpha aura. Ivory opted to lick her muzzle to show her we do not mean her any harm and she bows her head again.
I used my head to motion for her to come with me and I stand next to her to lean on while she struggles to her feet. Once on her feet she follows me, and I walked slowly to accommodate her limp. We leave the woods the same way that I came in and I notice my father is waiting outside up against his 2016 blue single cab dodge truck. I grab my clothes and step behind the cover of the trees and get dressed.
My dad approaches me as I step back out of the woods, I hear a little growl escape him as he looks at the female rouge who I’ve brought with me.
“What’s the game plan here?” he asks me in a serious tone.
“Ivory senses that we can trust her. I don’t know the situation yet, but she needs to see doctor Paul or his daughter doctor Grace.” I reply and he nods. “Do you still have some of my clothes in your truck?” I ask and he nods again.
I motion for the rouge to follow me to the truck, and I open the driver door and reach behind the seat to get the clothes. I set the clothes on the seat of the truck and stand cover in the opening of the door so that she can shift and put on the T-shirt and running shorts that were in the truck. My dad being the respectable man he is has his back to us while she dresses. Once she is dressed, I help her into the truck, and she slides over to the passenger seat.
“Dad, we can go now.” I call out and he turns and heads our way as I climb in the truck and slide into the middle seat.
The drive to the small clinic is silent, but the upside is the clinic is only about a block from the pack house so after we take this rouge to the doctor the ride to the pack house will be short.
As we get about a block from the clinic, I mind link Grace and her dad Paul, “Hey, I’m not sure who is on duty today, but I found an injured wolf in the woods today and we’re bringing her in.”
“Okay, I’ll be ready for her.” Grace links back.
“You’re bringing a rouge into our territory?” Paul asks in shock. In many packs questioning the alpha is punishable but here in our pack we have encouraged open conversation among us. We try to value everyone’s opinion, within reason.
“Yes, I know we normally kill rouges, but she wasn’t attacking, she's already injured, and Ivory said she could be trusted.” I responded.
“Well, I guess we will have to wait and see but I will say I trust your wolf’s judgement. I don’t know where your mom got her information, but she said your wolf is special even though we don’t know how yet.” Paul replied and left it at that.
When we got to the clinic, I climbed out the driver side with my dad and we both went around to the passenger side and helped the rouge out of the truck and into the clinic.
As were helping her into the clinic I ask, “What’s your name?” just now realizing I hadn’t even thought to ask.
“My name is Vanessa.” She replied in a soft almost whisper.
We opened the door to the clinic and Grace was inside waiting for us, after seeing Vanessa she unfolded a wheelchair that was folded against the wall by the entrance next to us. Once in the wheelchair Grace took control over pushing and we followed her to the hall and through the door where she had to scan her ID to enter.
“Don’t worry we will get you taken care of,” Grace said in a loving voice to Vanessa as she pushed her into one of the patient rooms. “Help me get her up on the bed.” Grace said to no one in particular and my dad picked her up out of the wheelchair and set her on the patient bed with little effort.
“While doctor Grace here is cleaning your wound out can you tell us how you got to where I found you?” I asked as nicely as I could trying not to frighten her anymore than we already might have.
Vanessa nodded and then began, “Well it was my 16th birthday party, and it came time for me to shift for the first time. My parents had previously asked me if I wanted company for my first shift, but my older siblings had all told me how wonderful it was to feel the ground beneath their feet for the first time and I wanted to revel in the experience just me and nature. Anyway, I shifted into my wolf and just ran and enjoyed my first shift. Then, I returned home to an all-out fight in the backyard, wolves that weren’t familiar to me were fighting with my family. My little brother and sister were cowering under a picnic table. I snuck over to them and got them into the house to safety and then I turned around just in time to see a large red wolf lunge at me. I wasn’t prepared to defend myself at that moment, so I rolled out of the way of the wolf just in time to avoid the strike. Luckily the red wolf, caught off guard hit the ground hard, and I was able to take a moment to get away. I saw a grey wolf standing over my mom, so I ran at him and took him down. My mom looked up and noticed it was me and then mind linked me, and I quote ‘these people are here for you, run’ and just as I was going to run away the grey wolf, I had knocked over grabbed my hind leg. My mom attacked him so I could get away and when I looked back, she was wounded. I don’t even know if she’s alive,” at this point tears were streaming down her face, but she continued. “I got as far away as I could, and I heard my dad in my mind telling me he loves me but asking me to stay away because it wasn’t safe for me. I remained in wolf form because I wasn’t sure I could walk in human form much less survive. At some point I lost consciousness and Silva carried on because I don’t remember ever crossing the Blood River into your pack. My leg hurts like hell, but I am alive thanks to my wolf.”
“Do you know how long you were in the woods alone?” I asked.
“No, I would ask my wolf, but she is sleeping. I just came to earlier today sometime before you found me.”
“What day was your birthday?” I asked her.
“November 10th.” she said.
“Vanessa today is November 13th. You left your house the night of the 10th, so you have been missing from your pack for a little over 2 days.” I reply to her.
“Oh wow,” she pauses a moment. “I thought my dad and my brother would have come for me by now, my brother is top warrior so they had to have won the fight and my dad is the best hunter and tracker in the whole pack so he should have been able to follow my trail.”
“Well, I will contact your alpha and we will see what we can do, I am sure they notified the alpha that you are missing. I assume you are from the White Oak pack to the West of us?” I ask.
“Yes, I am but I don’t think our alpha will be around for a couple days. He left for pack business and should be back the 15th last I heard.” She said.
“Alright well, I will see what I can do.” I say to Vanessa before turning to Grace. “How’s it going over there?” I asked
“Great, you have distracted her long enough that I was able to clean her up, numb her, and I am just about done with the stitches.” She replied to me and then spoke to Vanessa. “I want to keep you here for a couple days to observe you and keep you off that leg. With the stitches pulling the skin tight you should heal in no time."
“Thank you, Grace.” I said as she gathered up her stuff to leave us in the room.
“Thank you,” Vanessa said to Grace.
