Chapter 2
Selene’s POV
I sat in the corner and pulled my knees together to my chest, my wrists were paining me from where they had tightened the iron cuffs. The silence was heavy before it was disturbed by the sound of dropping water from the ceiling.
I tried not to think but when the body isn't active, my mind starts to act on its own , forcing hurtful memories.
I had lost everything in one night, my pack, my family, my mate. My parents had never loved me, they never even pretended to love me. Their disgust for me was so obvious.
To them, I was the mistake of the weaker daughter, the one who never fit in. Lila was the golden one, born perfect, adored by everyone. Father trained her to lead while I was told to stay quiet, stay small, stay out of sight.
If I spoke, Mother scolded me for sounding ungrateful. If I cried, Father said I was embarrassing him.
So I learned to be silent, the only one who ever made me feel seen and loved was Caleb.
He was the Alpha’s son, very strong, confident, always surrounded by others. I used to think that he was kind. I used to think that he saw me for who I was, not what I wasn’t.
When the heavens marked him as my mate, I thought maybe my life was finally changing but the heaven must have been cruel.
It was only a few hours before everything fell apart. I went to see him that night, the door to his quarters was half open, his light was still on then I heard the sound of Lila's voice, she was laughing.
My stomach twisted into a knot.
I pushed the door open, and there they were.
Both started naked, Caleb’s hands were on her waist. Her lips were on his neck, their scents mixed, and the bond that should have felt sacred between us burned me.
“Caleb?” My voice broke.
The both of them froze, stood up at once and wrapped clothes around their body.
Lila turned towards me, her voice was calm. “Oh, sister didn’t anyone teach you to knock?”
“Get away from him.” I said, my voice rising.
“No.” She retorted.
I looked at Caleb. “Say something.”
He didn’t, he just stood there his eyes flicked between us, it was full of panic and shame.
“Tell me that you didn’t know.” I whispered in a trembling voice.
Lila smiled. “He knew, he just didn’t care.” She said, her tone laced with venom.
“Lila, stop.” Caleb finally said, his voice was low.
But Selene didn't stop talking. “He doesn’t want you, Selene, you are weak, you are nothing.”
Her words hit harder than I had expected, my hand moved on its own and then I slapped her the sound echoed through the room.
Her eyes went dark, and she stepped toward me in a fighting stance but Caleb stopped her, standing in between us.
“Enough.” He said.
“You are defending her?” Lila hissed.
“I am trying to fix this.”
“Fix?” I repeated angrily.
“There is nothing to fix, you betrayed the bond.”
“You don’t understand, If this gets out, it will destroy everything.” He said in a low, dangerous tone.
“I don’t care! you are my mate!” I shouted.
“Not anymore.” He said quietly.
He stepped outside and called the guards outside. “Arrest her.”
I froze. “What?”
“She is a traitor, she has been meeting rogues I have seen.”
“That’s a lie!”
Lila folded her arms, smiling like it was a game. “Poor Selene, always the victim.”
“Do it.” He ordered and they lifted up their guns.
“Caleb, please.” I begged.
“I can’t let you ruin everything that I've built.” He said coldly.
Before I could respond, the first bullet hit my shoulder, the second bullet was about to meet me but I sped outside.
“Find her! “Finish her!” I heard Lila scream.
I ran until I ended up here chained, waiting for a death that I didn’t deserve.
The sound of footsteps pulled me away from my thoughts. The door opened followed by two guards entering.
“Get up.” One of them said,
“Why?” My voice was hoarse.
“Alpha’s orders.”
My stomach twisted into a knot, they dragged me out of the cell to a narrow hallway.
My whole legs trembled, every step I took sent a wave of pain up around my body When we reached the main hall, I saw him.
Damon was standing near the window, tall, broad-shouldered, The then guards shoved me forward.
“Alpha.” One of them said, “She is here.”
Damon turned around and for a moment, the world went silent. His eyes were fully on mine.
And then I felt it, the air suddenly shifted, my heart skipped a beat. And then it hit me. I felt a wave of heat and tingling sensation around my entire body.
My knees went numb and i gasped for breath, my wolf screaming a single word in my head
Mate.
No No, this can't be happening.
Damon’s jaw tightened, he walked closer towards me, his eyes darkened in anger.
He felt it too.
His breath came out uneven and he clenched his fists at both sides trying to contain his anger, the matebond snapping into place.
He stared at me for a long time, fury burning behind the calm expression that he had masked. I knew what he was thinking that fate had bound him to an enemy, to the same blood he despised.
I took a step backwards in disbelief. “No…”
Damon’s eyes darkened. “The heavens must be mocking me.”
Damon was my second chance mate.
