CHAPTER ONE: The Return
The rain began just as Zara Williams crossed the town limits. Large drops struck the windshield of her car, turning the familiar roads into blurred shadows. She tightened her grip on the steering wheel and stared ahead. Seven years. That was how long she had stayed away from Blackwood. Seven years since she had packed her belongings and left without looking back. Seven years since the town had become known for a disappearance that still haunted its streets. Emily Hart. Even now, the name lingered like a ghost. Zara sighed and switched on the wipers. The old welcome sign appeared through the rain. WELCOME TO BLACKWOOD Population: 12,406 The number hadn’t changed. Neither had the feeling in her chest. An uncomfortable mixture of nostalgia and dread. Her phone vibrated. It was her aunt. “Have you arrived?” Aunt Rebecca asked immediately. “Almost.” “Good. Drive carefully. The roads are slippery.” “I know.” A brief silence followed. Then her aunt spoke again. “You heard about what happened last week?” Zara frowned. “No.” “There was another sighting.” Zara’s stomach tightened. “A sighting of who?” “You know who.” Emily Hart. Even after seven years, people still claimed to see her. At first the reports had been dismissed as grief and imagination. Then the stories multiplied. People saw a girl standing beside the lake. A girl crossing empty roads after midnight. A girl watching from the windows of abandoned buildings. Always the same description. Long dark hair. White dress. Bare feet. Emily. “People are still talking about that?” Zara asked. Her aunt’s voice lowered. “More than ever.” The call ended shortly afterward. By the time Zara reached the center of town, darkness had settled across the streets. Most shops were closed. Streetlights cast pools of pale yellow light onto wet pavement. Everything looked smaller than she remembered. Yet somehow more threatening. She parked outside a small diner and decided to eat before heading to her aunt’s house. A bell chimed as she entered. Warm air rushed toward her. Several customers looked up. For a moment, silence filled the room. Then recognition appeared on their faces. “Zara?” She turned. A man rose from a booth. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dark eyes. Ethan Cole. Her former best friend. And the last person she expected to see. “Ethan.” He smiled. “I heard you might be coming back.” “It’s been a while.” “Seven years.” The exact number hung between them. Neither mentioned why she had left. Some memories remained dangerous. Ethan gestured toward an empty seat. “You can join me.” Against her better judgment, Zara sat down. They talked about ordinary things. Work. Life. The years that had passed. But eventually the conversation drifted toward the one topic everyone in Blackwood seemed unable to avoid. Emily Hart. “You remember her?” Ethan asked. “Of course.” Everyone remembered Emily. She had disappeared at sixteen years old. One moment she was attending a school fundraiser. The next she was gone. No witnesses. No ransom. No body. Nothing. The case had become one of the country’s most baffling mysteries. Ethan leaned closer. “Someone saw her again three nights ago.” Zara rolled her eyes. “People have been seeing her for years.” “This time was different.” “What do you mean?” “The security cameras caught something.” That got her attention. “What?” “A girl.” Zara laughed. “Probably another teenager playing a prank.” “That’s what everyone thought.” His expression remained serious. “Until they reviewed the footage.” A chill moved through her. “What did it show?” Ethan hesitated. Then he said quietly: “The girl looked exactly like Emily.” Outside, thunder echoed across the town. At that exact moment, every light inside the diner flickered. The room fell silent. A strange tension spread among the customers. The lights returned seconds later. But something felt wrong. Very wrong. An elderly woman sitting near the window suddenly gasped. Her coffee cup slipped from her hands and shattered on the floor. Everyone turned toward her. She was staring through the glass. At the street outside. Her face had gone pale. “What is it?” someone asked. The woman pointed with a trembling finger. Zara followed her gaze. A figure stood beneath a streetlight. Motionless. Watching the diner. Rain poured around her. Long dark hair hung over her shoulders. A white dress clung to her body. Bare feet rested on wet pavement. The girl’s face was partially hidden by shadows. Yet something about her felt terrifyingly familiar. No one spoke. No one moved. The figure remained there for several seconds. Then lightning flashed. The street exploded with white light. And when darkness returned— She was gone. Vanished. As though she had never been there. The diner erupted into frightened whispers. Several customers rushed outside. Others crossed themselves. One woman began crying. Zara remained frozen in her seat. Her heartbeat thundered inside her chest. Ethan slowly stood. “You see now?” She looked at him. “What exactly is happening in this town?” Ethan’s answer sent a chill through her entire body. “That’s what we’re trying to find out.” And somewhere beyond the rain-soaked streets of Blackwood, someone was watching. Waiting. And preparing for the next move.
