Chapter 12
I put my head to my palms.
"Go away now. I just need to think right now." He needs to think? I need to think. And where was I supposed to go? Outside? I am certainly not an animal. I'm also wondering where I will go to the bathroom. It seems like this strange place wouldn't even have a bathroom at all.
"Come on Crystal. We can talk." Frankie beckoned me. She walked down the hallway slowly. I peered over at Adam, or Jay, one more time. Now he had his head in his palms. I rolled my eyes. I stood up cautiously. Frankie was now just standing there at the end of the hall. She called for me to come with her. Fine. But this doesn't mean I like this women. For all I know, maybe she is Jays wife! Then I definitely would have to hate her. Frankie seemed like she was in about her late 20's though. Jay seemed like he was 50.
"This will be your room." It was a pure gray block. Literally. The room was in a block shape and was gray. There was nothing in it at all. All there was was a rectangular window at the edge of the top of the right side of the room. Except the window had 6 metal bars on it, crossing over each other.
"You've got to be kidding me, right?" I said. I tried not to show it but I was have a panic attack inside.
"It's really comfortable. You just have to let it grow on you. I'll let you get settled in." She nudged me forward and shut the door. I breathed heavily. This isn't like my bedroom at home at all. There are no posters on the walls. There is no closet or dresser. There isn't even any stuffed animals. I slid down slowly up against the cold hard wall. A tear fell down my cheek. No, no. I can't be giving up this early in the game. In fact, this was all sort of like a game, right? I mean, there are players. There is one main goal. And that one main goal is for me to stay alive.
I wiped away the stray tears. No, I must be strong. I have to keep my best poker face if I want to keep breathing. It was vital to my existence.
I stood up and went for the door. My first thought was to open it. But then I stopped myself, thankfully. I propped my ear against the door. Maybe I could hear if Frankie and Jay were talking or not.
"I don't want you f*****g this one up to, Franks. We just can't afford that kinda crap." I heard Jays low voice say. Following that I could only make out silence, and then footsteps. I cowered quickly back into the corner of the room. I sat straight up and flattened out my clothes. I wanted to show them that this room did not put a dent in my confidence they think I have.
"Hi, sweetie." Frankie entered the room once more.
"Come out here again, Jay wants to talk to you." I reluctantly followed her command. I pushed past her though and walked to the "living" room where Jay was at.
"Okay Crissy-" He said, folding his hands.
"No. My name is Crystal, got it?"
"You have a little attitude on you don't you Crissy?" I clenched my fists in anger. He stood up from his recliner and thrust me onto the floor. I rubbed my shoulders, man did is guy have some strength.
"I'm gonna tell you a little story. And it might make your attitude issue a bit less severe." He scooted to the edge and stared down at me. Still, I did not want to look him in the eyes. It was too much.
"Look me in the eyes, Crissy!" He brung up my chin. I shut my eyes as tightly as I could. But Jay made sure that my tightest wasn't tight enough. He poked me in each eye lid. I instinctively opened them. His menacing eyes stared into mine. They were gray, almost like the shade of gray as my new "room" was. I could see years behind his actual eyes. It's hard to explain, just that he's had some times in his life. You know?
"Alright. Crystal---" He said mockingly, "I will begin my tale. . It began 20 years ago. Long before you were born."
"Well I turn 13 in November." I interrupted. He shushed me.
"Anyways! I had a two friends of mine. Me and them and a few others were real close. Kinda like the cast of friends, but less comedic." He chuckled at his own joke. "The two friends always had these secret little crushes on each other. But they never had the guts to say anything. So one day, I told them. And then, eh, you know, one thing lead to the next. They got married! I was so happy. I felt like a matchmaker! Which I actually was in that situation. After the marriage they really wanted kids. I really wanted kids too but I hadnt found the perfect lady yet. So I tell them, why don't you just make a baby for me? A simple request from their friend, me. I said why don't you just have a child, and give it to me? I would soon enough find the right women, then we could raise it together. They got really upset. So upset that they left the city. I was the one who was truly crushed! The least they could have done for me was give me a child! I made their whole relationship possible."
I thought for a quick second that he choked up. Who just asks for someone's child? That's insane. I had no idea how this whole thing will give me the slightest attitude change.
"Ah, okay. Continuing. The women got pregnant. She gave birth to a beautiful, baby girl. They even sent me a card with her picture in when she was born. I tried visiting them numerous times, but they always were out of town when I came into their town. I really jus needed to see that child. She was so gorgeous. So 8 years after she was born, I finally got my chance to visit. The girl was well beyond her years in knowledge. And she was still simply gorgeous. When I got to visit, her parents invited me for dinner. With their forgetful antics, they had to go and buy dinner after I already arrived. They asked me to watch the girl, so I did. But I couldn't control myself. I had to take her. It was so easy too. Like how I took you, Crissy. She was so good to me. So kind and willing. She always did as I told her. And she did everything happily, too. Only because she knew it was her job to please me.But when she turned 15 she changed..."
15?! He did not just say fifteen! My mouth hung open. He had had her for 7 years! I tried to shake the idea out of my head that I would be here that long. Or even longer.
"She started being strange. She was very, very disrespectful. I had done so much for her! And this was how she repaid me? When she turned 17, I hit my breaking point. Numerous failed escapes, and other unspeakable crimes... I couldn't do it anymore. I killed her. She wasn't a problem anymore. But since then, I've been lonely. I need another girl in my life who was like her before she changed. So that's why I have you now."
Did he even know how crazy that all sounded? And to top it off he was incredibly dramatic too.
"What was her name?" I asked.
"Mary Dodger." Mary Dodger! That girl is pretty much the most famous person to ever be kidnapped. How was Jay not found out about? Mary's parents must have knew he took her.
"All is I'm saying is don't be a Mary Dodger, and you won't have the same fate as her." Well, Jays little story worked. He's officially scared the hell of me.
