Prologue
CONFUSION, UTTER CONFUSION WAS ALL the boy could understand in himself right now. At six, the young boy had a good amount of intelligence, there were just some things he couldn't analyze. His parents barely even explained one thing. He knew he should've ignored it, he just couldn't. Here's what he did understand. They're hiding, he doesn't know who exactly he was supposed to hide from, but they are. He always secretly watched his parents in their distressed state, watching as they exchanged a bag and worried looks. Although he was young, he knew that whatever they were doing, it wasn't the answer to all their problems.  Here he is now. In a state that wasn't where he originally lived. He never gets to say good bye to his friends, not that he ever had much. He had Desean, Rego, and Tadii, that's all he could think of. He liked them because they understood him and that made him feel better, but that's all gone now. His parents started a new life, they told him that everything will get better now that they're in Chicago. He didn't believe them but he had no choice. Looking out the window of the car he rode in, he saw gigantic buildings, yellow cars, and people rushing around. He wanted to be excited, but it just didn't feel right. As they drove on, they went into the darker side of the city, until they reached a small looking house. He got out of the vehicle while his parents did and marched straight into his new "home". He barely took time to look around and went straight into what he already claimed his. He picked the smallest room and set his little luggage down. He looked around the room, it wasn't the best but, it also wasn't the worst room he's had. He sat on his bed carelessly and started to blank out. As he did, a girl's voice filled his head "No please! Don't hurt me! I don't want to die!" The boy whipped his head around the room, tears filled his eyes "Veronica! Is that you!? Answer me!" He started to scream desperately for what he thought was his dead sister, "Please Roni!" His parents rushed in the room and shushed him "Veronica isn't here bub, it's okay, she's in a better place now" His momma hugged him as he sobbed. While he cried, the voice reappeared faintly, "Who's there!? Who's Roni?" He shut his eyes and the voice stopped immediately. His parents left the room to let him rest. He closed his eyes slowly, feeling drowsy. Suddenly, a loud BANG jolted him fully awake and alert. He looked outside his window to see cars with blue and red lights. Frightened, he called for his mom and dad. He ran downstairs to see the men banging the door. His momma rushed to him, her hands shaking "Bub run. You have to trust me, run through the back door. Momma and Daddy will catch up." He nodded and hesitantly moved towards the back door. He looked at her once more and she mouthed "Go". With that, he ran, he ran as fast as his little legs could. And before he shut the door he heard "GET DOWN ON THE GROUND"
