WILLS AND WISHES
'Good morning, Dhivya!' the person greeted her with a warm smile as soon as she opened the door.
'What is it?' Dhivya asked still drooling in her beauty sleep. She had a pastel blue floral nightdress on, with her messy bun and sleepy eyes smudged with last night's kajal forming thick dark circles below her eye bags she looked like a witch about to hunt but she was a pretty witch!
'Look I have got your parent's will,' Raj her lawyer beamed in happiness.
'What? You can't be serious right now?' Dhivya groaned in frustration. She had decided long back not to entertain her parent's will and wishes but her lawyer seemed more curious about it than her.
He barged in before she could welcome him, it was more like a habit now. With her half sleepy eyes, she walked into the washroom to freshen up after ordering her best friend to make some morning coffee.
Raj and Dhivya were best buddies since school days, though he had to move to another city for his further career in Law, they had a very healthy friendship that stood strong against society and its judgments. Apparently, he was the only guest at her flat in the city.
'I think your parents really love you,' Raj said going through the copy of the will which he had secured after risking his job. Dhivya rolled her eyes at his statement which seemed quite absurd.
'I am least interested in whatever I am going to get!' she muttered.
'Anyways let me brief it to you one last time before you make your decision,' Raj said making her sit on the chair. Dhivya huffed and nodded at him when he handed her some caffeine.
'Okay!' Raj smiled at her and started to read out the details, 'All the land properties so held by your parents together will be divided among your brother and you equally.'
'I m aware of that, it was discussed before too!' Dhivya said.
'Next, all the gold currently in possession of your mother will go to you,' Raj said, 'You are quite a princess bro!' He added.
'Next!' Dhivya sounded least interested and waved at him to continue.
'The mansion house will go to the.....' Before Raj could finish Dhivya completed the statement for him, 'Charity. I am aware of it and I have already told you that I am least interested in all these matters, I don't understand why you brought it here early in the morning,' Dhivya ranted.
'Girl, you are losing the mansion house, and considering the financial support your brother had received during his business venture in the past, you are at disadvantage now. Your dad is quite sick and his chances of recovering are actually very less,' Raj uttered his last words carefully.
Dhivya was nodding at him, her face read no expression. Silence surrounded them, 'This coffee is better than before, keep up the good work buddy!' she said taking the last sip from the cup.
'Dhivya, the mansion house!' Raj said in a serious voice.
'I know I am losing it, I was aware of that since the very beginning. I love that place because it was my home for two decades. I grew up there, all my memories with my parents, my brother, my grandparents still reside there and I have already understood that being materialistic is just like being a fool in love since I am already past that phase so let's not go back to that,' Dhivya said with no sadness in her voice.
'Try talking out about it with your parents, I know you love that place,' Raj suggested.
'Love and Bargain!' Dhivya looked at him and said, 'Weird combination of words as well as worst choice for life so No!' She was quite determined and Raj understood it.
'Your brother is asking for more financial assistance from your dad,' Raj said after a pause, Dhivya looked at him in surprise, 'Sorry! I overheard their conversation at the hospital,' he answered before she could question him.
'What is it about?'
'No idea! You want me to check on him?' He asked.
'Just forget it!'Dhivya nodded at him with a small smile that didn't reach her eyes, 'Thanks for everything!' she said.
'Hope there are no more surprises for you!' Raj muttered to himself collecting the papers from the table.
Dhivya sighed and walked towards her room still lost in her own thoughts, 'I won't see you out then, I still need to go to the hospital and then I have a meeting to attend so lock the door before you get out,' She banged her room door shut leaving Raj behind in the drawing-room, all alone.
Raj who was used to her behavior by now didn't seem to mind. He washed the cups for her and ordered some breakfast before leaving the house.
As soon as she stepped out of the cab her phone started ringing. She decided against driving considering the annoying Monday Morning traffic of the city!
'Can you be more responsible?' chided the person without any pause.
'I am at the entrance mom,' Dhivya said plainly and hung up the call.
She walked into the elevator to reach the fifth floor, reserved for VIP patients. The corridor was silent enough to echo her clicking heels, she knocked on the door before entering the room carrying two takeaway food bags.
'What's wrong with you? Can't you cook some food?' her mom Latha asked in evident anger.
'I did! It's in my bag and this takeaway food is for you and Rahul,' Dhivya glared at her mom and took out a small hot pack from her bag.
'She should be patient before making awful statements at me!' Dhivya thought.
She sat next to the patient's bed looking at her phone waiting for her dad, who was in the washroom for his morning rituals.
'What did you bring today?' Vasudev her father asked as soon as he caught sight of her.
'Usual stuff, no salt, and no spice!' Dhivya smiled at her father making him sit on the bed.
He was weak and tired, she had never seen him like that. As far as she remembered her father, he was an angry young man, strong and widely respected for his smartness and compassion in the business field. Seeing him like that did pain her but she was accustomed to concealing everything her heart feels, the lesson she had received from the man himself.
'What's with your new start-up?' He asked having food from the box she had brought.
'It's still under consideration so will take time!' she replied obediently.
'What about the previous one?' He asked.
'Closed down what else!' her mom mocked.
Vasudev was aware of her habits, Dhivya was a spontaneous child since school. She worked hard for the things she wished to possess, once she succeeded she used to discard everything she had in her hands to make new adventures.
'Success is short living so I want to keep exploring things which make me happy!' Dhivya had told her father once when she was questioned about her changing priorities. But according to her mom, Dhivya was a spoilt girl who can't hold on to things for longer durations, a fickle-minded with the worst attitude for any girl.
Dhivya sat there in silence,' Do you have any reason for doing so Dhivya?' her father asked, she nodded in no.
'Get married!' Her father spoke after a pause which sounded like a pure order.
'Yeah! Get married!' Her brother Rahul, stepped in with a smile to ease the atmosphere of the room.
Dhivya stood up from her chair to greet him. The siblings shared some deep bonding which their parents were not aware of.
'Neha?' Latha asked about her daughter-in-law.
'She went to drop Nishanth to school,' Rahul said having his favorite food from the covers his sister had brought. The family started having their breakfast together with small talks.
'I will come back in the evening!' Dhivya said when she received a call from an unknown number, she left before her mom could say anything.
'So this is your new way of blackmailing me?' Rutvik asked his mom in surprise.
'You should get married someday!' his mom Radha stated.
'And that someday is not right now....' Rutvik retorted.
'I wish you to see happily married!' She played her mom's card this time yet again.
Before she could say anything further, her husband Kamal walked in, 'We are going to the hospital this evening!' He told his wife sitting next to her on the sofa.
'Rutvik, Can you join us?' He asked his son who was trying to escape from that place.
'I have a meeting!' Rutvik said in a soft voice.
'Fine ask Karthik to come with us!' Kamal said before indulging himself in the newspaper.
Rutvik looked at his mom and gave a victorious smile, which she returned back with the same enthusiasm making him doubt her intentions.
'Dinner at home!' Radha ordered her son who always skipped food at home due to his work.
'Bye!' He glared at her and left.
Rutvik loved his work, he had places to be every single day, and his schedule being unpredictable kind of made him happy, he had no attachments to any place and no promises to be kept. Though working the whole day felt tiresome, he had his escape doors ready all the time, and thankfully his adventures had caused no harm so far.
