Chapter 1
Ava's POV
"Hi, good morning, I'm here to see Neil Adams" I said to the receptionist when I got to the office.
"OK ma'am" she responded politely. "His office is on the seventh floor. "When you take the elevator, it's the second door to your right".
"OK, thanks" I responded.
I got to the office as directed. Opening the door, I saw his secretary.
"Good morning, I'm here to see Neil. Can you please tell him I'm here". I said to the secretary. She was giving me an irritating look.
"And who are you and do you have an appointment with Mr Adams?" She asked dryly.
" I am his wife and I want to see him," I said, returning the irritating look she gave me.
She burst into laughter. " First, you're not his wife. I mean, you can never be his wife. "It could be a part of your imagination, but Mr Adams can never choose someone like you as his wife," She said, looking at me with disgust.
I was so furious. I mean, why would she say that? Does she not think I'm good enough for him? I felt embarrassed. " How dare you talk to me like that!" I snapped back." I demand to see Neil right now!" I said, dropping the lunch I had packed on the table.
" Oh, so I see you brought his lunch. Then I guess you must be his maid. Well Mr Adams is not on, seat today because today is his wedding day, and you're obviously not his wife," she said, snorting.
My eyes widened in disbelief. " How do you mean he's getting married, and who is he getting married to? That cannot be possible because he's already married to me."
" You're so full of dreams, but you are in no position to ask about my boss, and I'm not going to tell you anything about the wedding. "You may take your leave now. "Leave the lunch box behind, Thank you, and please close the door on your way out." She said as she faced the monitor to continue with her work.
I did not know what to do, but if what she said was true, I had to find out. Neil could not betray me like that. Deep down I hoped all this was just some kind of joke, but the secretary sounded so sure of what she said.
" Can I at least get the venue of the wedding?" I asked, hoping she would respond."
"And why should I give it to you? You look like you are a stalker".
" You're right. I'm not his wife, I'm just his daughter's nanny and I need to know where I'll take his daughter to when she's back from school." I lied trying to convince her.
She gave me a stern look." I was right. Well, next time, watch what you say so you'll not lose your job." She handed me a wedding invitation card.
"Thank you so much" I said as I hurriedly collected the card and left.
"Neil Adams is not going to take me for a fo I said to myself as I exited the building.
*******
The venue was a beautiful resort. It was small but elegant, which meant they invited a few guests. Even with the few guests, there were still some reporters outside. When I reached the auditorium, I discovered I was too late as Neil had already exchanged vows with his new bride.
It was Scarlett!!?" My husband was getting married to my own younger sister !
I suddenly felt numb and hoped it was just a nightmare I could wake up from. Even my parents were at the wedding.
The guests soon cheered as they kissed. I was determined to stop the wedding, but my mother stopped me.
"What do you think you are doing here Ava", my mom said, grabbing her arm and dragging her out of the premises.
I expected someone to stop me, but not my mom.
"Mom! What are you doing?." I exclaimed as I yanked my hands off her grip.
"I am trying to stop you from doing anything stupid." She said,
" No mom. Don't tell me you're going to let your daughters marry the same man. Neil is my husband and Scarlett was clearly over Neil when she abandoned him at the altar four years ago." I explained.
" You're no longer married to Neil or haven't you signed the divorce papers?" She said, trying to make sure no one saw me.
My eyes widened." What divorce papers?." I paused, struggling to get words out of my mouth. Is this really happening?
