The Moon's Call
As Lyra walked through the forest, she felt the cool breeze brush against her skin, carrying with it the sweet scent of wildflowers. The forest was alive and brimming with anticipation feeding her own impatience to run. Lyra couldn't help but smile, feeling at peace for the first time in a long while. She had always felt a deep connection to the woods in the outskirts of the pack territory, but lately, it had been overshadowed by the stress of her everyday life. Now, surrounded by the beauty of the forest, Lyra felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her nostrils fill with the scent of the woods breathing the cool air deep into her chest and letting the tranquillity she found in this solitude wash over her. When she opened her eyes, Lyra noticed something strange. The trees around her seemed to glow with an otherworldly light, and a faint humming filled the air. Lyra looked around, confused, but before she could make sense of the change in atmosphere, a sudden otherworldly gust of wind knocked her off her feet. She tumbled down a small hill, her head hitting a rock, and everything went black. Lyra blinked her eyes regaining consciousness, her head pounding. It was impossible to know how much time had passed exactly, but the sky overhead was still dark. She groaned and tried to sit up, hitting a wall of dizziness and nausea, forcing her back down. As her vision cleared, and her senses Lyra realized she wasn't alone. A figure was standing over her, their face hidden by a dark hood. "Who are you?" Lyra asked, her voice weak. The figure didn't reply, but instead reached out a hand and helped Lyra to her feet slowly. As they stood face to face, Lyra could see that their eyes were a piercing shade of green, almost glowing in the dim light. "What do you want?" Lyra asked, her heart racing. The figure didn't speak, but instead pulled back their hood, revealing a cascade of bright red hair and a mischievous grin. "Lyra, my dear," the figure said, their voice smooth as silk. "It's time for you to awaken." ********************************************************************************************************* I jolted awake, my heart pounding in my chest. Sweat coated my skin, and my long silver hair stuck to my forehead and the back of my neck. The nightmare had been so vivid, so real. It took me a moment to shake it off, to remind myself that it was just a dream. I looked around the room, half-expecting to see the person from my nightmare lurking in the shadows. But there was nothing there, just the familiar shapes of my furniture and the glow of the streetlights outside. I sighed and sank back onto my pillow, feeling the dampness of the sheets beneath me. I knew there was no chance of me getting back to sleep now. The night was still and quiet, but my mind was racing. The fear from my nightmare had faded, leaving adrenaline in its place. Like a caged animal, I paced back and forth in my room. I was desperate to break free from the suffocating routine of my life. I had been told what to do, how to act, and who to be my entire life. Ever since my father passed and I inherited the pack, I have carried the burden of the survival of the Moonwood Pack. As I gazed out of my window, I saw the glowing full moon. It was as if it was calling out to me, begging me to come outside and bathe in its luminous glow. I slipped on my shoes and made my way outside, the soft grass crunching gently under each step. I took a deep breath, and the sweet scent of blooming flowers filled my nose. I looked up at the moon, and felt my heart quicken at the sight, I felt truly alive. It was as if the moon was speaking directly to me, its light pulsing with an otherworldly energy. I closed my eyes and let the moon's light wash over me. Suddenly, I felt a jolt of electricity run through my veins. The sensation was both exhilarating and terrifying. I heard the sound of soft grass crushing under shoes nearby and snapped my eyes open to catch the sight of Ethan, casually strolling towards me with his face partially illuminated by the soft light of the moon. I don’t know how he always knew when I couldn’t sleep, without fail every time I wound up out here at midnight he would saunter towards me with that same charming smile. I wondered if he found himself out here most nights of his own accord, or if the moon called to him too, if you asked him he would say it’s a mate bond that hasn’t yet revealed itself. He stood tall and proud, with broad shoulders and a muscular build that spoke of hours spent on the training fields. His chiselled jawline and sharp cheekbones were framed by short, dark hair that added to his rugged appeal. But it was his piercing blue eyes that really captured my attention - they seemed to see through to my soul and always left a lingering impression long after he had looked away. I drew in a sharp breath as he moved towards me. He moved with a confident grace, exuding an air of power and control that was hard to resist. Every step he took was deliberate, as if he knew exactly where he was going and what he wanted. He had been in training his whole life to be the alpha of the Moonwood pack, my pack. Despite his obvious physical strength, there was a gentleness in the way he held himself that gave away the goofy kid I grew up with. He dropped to his knee and swung his arm out in an exaggerated gesture “My lady, Luna Lyra. What does such an esteemed and distinguished leader of ---- oof!” I crouched and launched myself at Ethan, driving my shoulder hard into his stomach and knocking him to the ground. I caught a glimpse of him as I pounced back to strike again, I had managed to wind him – serves him right! Smart ass. “Please your highness, mercy” Ethan jested, laughing softly as he rolled to his feet. I c****d an eyebrow at him, daring him to keep going. Ethan raised both hands in submission and then held a hand out to me. I took a step closer, brushing my long silver hair behind my ears. Ethan slid his hand around my waist to the small of my back and pulled me closer. We stood there for a moment, feeling the heat of each others breath and the pulse of our hearts beating. Feeling the light of the moon washing over us. As he leaned in, his scent enveloped me, he smelled like the woods, comfortable and safe but undeniably wild, the thought left my mind as suddenly he was pressing his body firmly against mine, cupping my face and kissing me passionately. I let myself relax into his arms, feeling his hand slide from my cheek round the back of my neck, deepening the kiss and sliding his tongue into my mouth. I felt myself flush with anticipation and pulled back. “Want to go for a run?” I asked him under a guise of nonchalance I doubt he was convinced by. Ethan humored me anyway, respectful to a fault. He nodded slowly and we headed into the woods to shift.
