Mom grabbed me as soon as I came in the door. "Where have you been? I've been worried sick. The school called to say that they'd closed for the day."
I pulled free. "I went to the mall with Trisha."
"The mall?"
"I didn't want to bother you," I said. "What's the big deal?"
"The big deal? I get a call like that? Didn't it ever cross your mind that you might at least call your mother?"
Actually, no, it hadn't. I felt a twinge of guilt about that but not much. It isn't like she knew what was going on right now. Otherwise she would realize that a trip to the mall really didn't matter that much. I couldn't tell her that, of course. "Sorry. I just didn't think."
