Chapter 38

1325 Words

Chapter 38 Church begins at ten-thirty, and though I'm properly dressed and primped, there are still my keys, coat, scarf, and boots to gather. But I can't seem to get motivated. My mood has me sitting here at the breakfast table staring through the windows. Outside, chilly blue skies hold high cumulous clouds, while the ground is covered in untouched snow. Chickadees chirp, flickering from branch to branch, playing a game every child knows: catch me if you can. A sense of gratitude overwhelms me, which is strange because there are dark secrets I've yet to face. When did I first confuse nightmares with real life? I sit here stranded like a seal out of water, wondering did I kill Leland. Or did I want him dead so badly my dream came true? Reconstructing events of that day hasn't helped.
