chapter 1 An Unexpected Proposal From The Man Who Always Wanted Me
Note: This is a fictional story. Both characters are adults 22+ years old and are NOT blood-related. Their families have been family friends for 20 years. This is a consensual arranged marriage story. The music outside had stopped. That was the first sign that something was wrong. Inside the bridal room, Inaya was sitting on the edge of the bed. She was wearing a heavy red bridal lehenga that her mother had selected with so much love. Her hands were dark with fresh mehndi, and the name of a man who would never come was hidden inside it. Her jewelry was heavy, but her heart was heavier. The door opened with a loud sound. Her mother entered, her face covered with tears, her hands shaking. "Baraat wapis chali gayi, Inaya. Larka bhaag gaya. Usne phone par kaha ke usko ye shaadi nahi karni. Wo America jana chahta hai." For a second, Inaya could not breathe. She could hear the whispers of 200 guests sitting outside in the lawn. She could see her father in the corner, sitting on the floor, holding his chest. The man who had never bowed his head in front of anyone was crying because of his daughter's broken marriage. "Papa," she whispered and ran to him. "Papa please utho. I am okay. Main kahin nahi jaungi. Main aapke saath rahungi." Her mother pulled her back, her voice harsh because of fear, "Chup ho jao Inaya. Socho zara. Tumhari choti behen Zara ka kya hoga? Log kya kahenge? Kahenge badi behen ki baraat wapis gayi, to choti se kaun shaadi karega? Humari izzat khatam ho gayi." At that exact moment, the main door of the house opened again. Everyone became silent. Zayan Ahmed Khan walked in. He was wearing a simple black sherwani. His eyes were calm, his face was always respectful. He was the son of her father's oldest friend, the man who was considered the most respectable man in their whole family circle. Inaya had known him since she was 10 years old. He was 5 years older than her. He had never looked at her directly, always with respect. He went to her father, sat on his knees on the floor, and said with utmost respect, "Uncle, agar aap ijazat dein to main kuch kehna chahta hun." Her father looked at him with helpless eyes. Zayan took a deep breath and said, "Uncle, we are not blood-related. You know our families are friends for 20 years. If you and Inaya allow, I want to marry Inaya today, right now, to save your honor. But I swear, this will only happen if Inaya says Qubool Hai from her heart. I will not force her. If she says no, I will still stand with you in front of all 200 guests and tell them that this is not Inaya's fault." The whole room was shocked. No one expected this. Inaya looked at him. Her eyes were full of tears. "Zayan, you don't have to do this. This is my fate." Zayan stood at a respectful distance, keeping his eyes down, and replied, "Inaya, I know you hate this situation. I know you always wanted to marry someone else, you wanted to marry Sameer. I let you dream, I let you go to college, I never stopped you because I thought you were still young. I have liked you, respected you since childhood, but I never said it because I wanted you to choose your own life. Today is not about my feelings. Today is about your father's respect." Before Inaya could answer, Zayan's father entered. He was a man of few words. Everyone respected him. He said loudly so everyone could hear, "If Inaya agrees, then her Nikkah will be with my son Zayan Ahmed Khan. And it will be with full respect, with Qubool Hai from the heart. No force." Her father looked at Inaya, tears in his eyes, "Beta, izzat ka sawal hai, lekin tumhari marzi sabse pehle hai. Agar tumhe ye nahi karna, to mana kar do. Hum sab sambhal lenge. Hum yahan se chale jayenge." That was the moment. 200 guests were waiting outside. Her father's honor was on one side, her unknown future on the other. And in front of her was the one man who had always protected her in every family wedding, who never let any boy misbehave with her. Molvi sahab was called inside. He sat down with the Nikkah register. He looked at Inaya softly, "Beta Inaya Fatima, kya aapko Zayan Ahmed Khan walid Ahmed Khan ke saath, haq meher 50 lakh, ye nikkah qubool hai?" Inaya's hands were shaking. Her mother was holding her hand tightly. She thought of her little sister Zara, her father's tears, and Zayan's respectful eyes that never forced her. She took a deep breath. Her voice was shaking but clear. "Qubool Hai." The room was silent. Second time, with a little more courage, "Qubool Hai." Third time, with a brave heart, looking at her father, "Qubool Hai." Her father started crying loudly, but this time with relief. Then Molvi sahab turned to Zayan, "Zayan Ahmed Khan, kya aapko Inaya Fatima ke saath ye nikkah qubool hai?" Zayan looked straight, his voice loud, proud, and full of respect, "Qubool Hai. Qubool Hai. Qubool Hai. I will keep her happy and respect her all my life." Everyone in the room said, "Mubarak Ho." The Nikkah was done. Inaya was no longer just Inaya. She was now Mrs. Zayan Ahmed Khan. The man who had silently loved and respected her for years was now her husband. The night was still long, the guests were still outside, but for the first time in the last one hour, Inaya felt that her new life, though unexpected, was starting with respect and safety. She felt a small hope in her heart. She remembered her father's face. He was crying but was also relieved. He was also trusting Zayan. He knew this night was difficult for everyone. Her mother was worried about Zara, her younger sister. The guests were waiting outside. His hands were difficult to handle. That one line gave her some strength. She took a deep breath and said Qubool hai for her family, for her father's respect. The room became silent. Everyone heard it. The Nikah was done. Her heart was beating fast. She did not know what will happen next. The guests outside were whispering. Her mother was holding Zara's hand. Her father was looking at her with tears. Zayan was still standing with respect, not coming close. He was waiting for her decision. Inaya closed her eyes. She remembered her childhood, Zayan always protected her in family weddings. He never let any boy disturb her. He was 5 years older but always treated her like a sister, with respect. Now he was becoming her husband. It was unexpected. It was scary. But it was also safe. She opened her eyes and felt a little calm. The room was still quiet. She took a deep breath again. The lights were dim. Her red lehenga was heavy. Her mehndi was dark. But her heart was now calm. She knew Zayan will respect her. She knew her family was safe now. She smiled a little. The night was long. But her new life was starting now with hope and respect and trust. Inaya looked at Zayan one last time before Molvi Sahab closed the register. Zayan did not smile big, he only nodded with respect, as if to say, I will never hurt you. That small nod gave Inaya more peace than ---
