Loic's POV
I jogged for what seemed like a decade to me before I broke into a race as I made my way to the lake, sprinting down. My feet came to a crashing stop just in front of the lake where she was.
My heart sank so fast that I couldn't think, I was unable to take in air for seconds before I jumped in, not caring about how cold it was and how I could order others to do it for me. This was Adele. The one who I had known for just days, but she had left an impact on me.
Pulling her out of the lake, I carried her princess style as I dropped her on the carpeted grass where everyone stood, staring down at me.
" Is she alive?"
" Will she live?"
" Was she so sad that she pushed herself in?"
" Do you think seeing the Alpha with his fiancée made her that way?" The gossip filled the air, but I couldn't care about them now.
All I wanted was for her to get up and call me by my name. For me not to be greeted with hands so cold that they could be used as ice. I swallowed before scooping her in my arms. "Search around for evidence. Something that I can use. Someone has to pay for this. Something has to be found. Anything!" I yelled before rushing in.
It had happened too fast. If I had my attention on her all the time. If I hadn't been distracted by Dominic, then this wouldn't have happened. She would still be here. Still be fine. I wouldn't have had to hold a cold body to myself.
My feet led me to my room, where I dropped her on the bed. The pack doctor and physician were waiting.
" Alpha."
" I want her alive. I want to hear her speak, and I don't want her deformed. Do whatever it is that you have to do. I don't want her harmed."
" We will do our best, Alpha."
My hands clenched around his collar. " I don't want you telling me that you will do your best. I want you to do everything you have to do. If she ends up dead, you will tag along, and I mean it." I warned.
I could see him fidgeting, but I couldn't care about whatever he was doing. I shouldn't have thrown this party. When she came earlier today, letting me know that she didn't want it, I should have gone with her wish, and should have made sure that she got what she wanted.
Because if I had granted her that, then she wouldn't have been here lying down almost dead without waking up.
I watched the pack doctor as he went about his work, my fingers in-between my lips while I paced up and down.
" You have to calm down." Astrid tried to talk to me, but I wasn't having it.
"I am calm."
" You are not calm, Loic. She will be fine."
"HOW EXACTLY DO YOU EXPECT ME TO BE CALM WHEN SHE IS THIS WAY? SHE WILL BE FINE? IS THAT ALL YOU HAVE TO SAY?" I yelled, having regrets the minute she recoiled.
" I'm sorry Astrid. This is just too much for me at the moment, and I shouldn't have yelled at you. It is none of your fault. Don't be vexed."
" It's fine." She threw herself into my arms." It will be fine."
I could have sworn that she smirked, but I didn't pay heed to that because it had to be me overthinking, which I wasn't supposed to be doing right now.
" I will be back." I instructed the doctors before I stepped out.
The room was stuffy, and I was cruel. I wasn't supposed to be thinking about the time we had spent in bed together when she was lying down almost dead. I ought to have kept my thoughts to myself and waited until she was better.
I was ashamed of myself for having thoughts that illicit when I should have done better not just to her but for myself as well.
" You look like a mess." Dominic stood at the door I was in as he gawked at me. "Like your love has left you."
I threw a punch at him, which he missed as he ducked to the side. "You know I was right about it. I saw it right through you, and I wonder if she knows as well. If Astrid knows what is going on and what she will do when she finds out."
" This isn't the time for your mind games; you either say what you have to say or get out."
" Get out?"
" Yes, why are you even here in the first place? I am sure everyone else has gone, and yet here you are lurking around when no one else wants you to."
" She was a friend, you know. A new one, but I am here to offer my help."
" Your help? Like I would ever need it." I brushed past him, making my way back when he blurted out," Love, you are beginning to fall in love with her. Does Astrid know? Have you thought about what she will do when she finds out?"
" I am not in love with anyone."
" You can lie to yourself, but you will finally come to the realization when it is right. Why do you feel that pain whenever she scrunches her face in pain? Why do you do everything to please her? Why did you get pissed at me because I was dancing at her?"
" You place yourself too high, Dominic. She is a breeder to me, and that is what she will ever be to me and nothing else."
" Hmmm," he drawled. "Then how about we do this? You know I have the best healers, and they will get the job done. I bring them over, and you hand her over to me once she gives birth to your heir, and she leaves your life. What do you say?"
