Chapter 1: Rejected Before the Moon
It hung above the Silver Fang Pack like a polished silver coin, bathing the village in a soft glow that made everything seem almost magical. Hundreds of lanterns decorated the enormous oak trees surrounding the ceremonial grounds, while music and laughter filled the warm summer air.
Tonight was the Moon Bonding Ceremony.
For years, Elara Ashwood had dreamed about this night.
She stood near the edge of the crowd in a simple silver dress, her fingers repeatedly brushing over the moonstone pendant around her neck. The dress wasn't expensive. Unlike the young women from wealthy families, Elara couldn't afford silk imported from the southern territories or jewelry decorated with precious stones.
But she had sewn the dress herself.
And tonight, she didn't care about wealth.
She cared about one person.
Her eyes found him almost immediately.
Alpha Kael Blackwood stood beneath the ancient Moon Tree, surrounded by members of the pack council. Dressed in black ceremonial clothing, he looked every bit like the powerful Alpha he had become.
At twenty-seven, Kael was admired by almost everyone in Silver Fang. He was a skilled warrior, a respected leader, and one of the strongest Alphas in the northern territories.
To Elara, however, he had always been something more.
He had been her secret.
Her impossible dream.
Her heart's weakness.
"You're staring again."
Elara quickly looked away.
Nora, her closest friend, was standing beside her with an amused expression.
"I wasn't staring."
"You were."
"I was looking at the Moon Tree."
Nora followed her gaze toward Kael.
"Of course. And the Moon Tree just happens to be standing directly behind the Alpha."
Elara tried not to smile.
"You talk too much."
"Someone has to keep you from embarrassing yourself tonight."
Elara lowered her voice. "What if he's my mate?"
Nora's teasing expression softened.
"Then I'll be the first person to congratulate you."
Elara looked back at Kael.
"What if he isn't?"
"Then you survive."
The answer made Elara laugh quietly.
Nora squeezed her hand.
"Whatever happens tonight, don't let it decide your worth."
Elara nodded.
She wanted to believe those words.
But deep inside, she knew that if the Moon Goddess chose Kael, her entire life would change.
She had loved him for years.
She had never confessed those feelings because she had always been afraid of rejection. Yet some foolish part of her believed fate would make the decision for her.
She didn't need to tell Kael she loved him.
If they were truly mates, he would know.
A deep horn suddenly echoed across the ceremonial grounds.
The crowd fell silent.
The High Priestess stepped beneath the Moon Tree, holding an ancient silver staff.
"Tonight," she announced, "the Moon Goddess will reveal the bonds destined to shape the lives of those standing before her."
One by one, young wolves stepped forward.
Some discovered their mates immediately.
The celebrations that followed were filled with tears, laughter, embraces, and excited congratulations.
Elara watched nervously.
Her heartbeat became faster with every passing minute.
Then the High Priestess looked toward her.
"Elara Ashwood."
The world seemed to become strangely quiet.
Elara took a deep breath and walked forward.
She could feel hundreds of eyes following her.
When she reached the center of the ceremonial circle, the moonlight fell directly upon her.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then everything changed.
A powerful warmth suddenly spread through Elara's chest.
She gasped.
Her wolf stirred inside her, crying out with recognition.
Across the ceremony grounds, Kael stiffened.
Their eyes met.
And Elara knew.
She knew before anyone spoke.
The invisible thread between them had awakened.
Her mate.
Kael was her mate.
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
After all those years, the Moon Goddess had answered her.
The crowd erupted.
"The Alpha has found his mate!"
"She's going to be our Luna!"
"Look at them!"
Elara barely heard the voices.
She could only see Kael.
She smiled through her tears and took a hesitant step toward him.
"Kael..."
He didn't smile.
In fact, he looked as though he had just received the worst news of his life.
The happiness slowly disappeared from Elara's face.
"What's wrong?"
Kael's hands tightened into fists.
For one painful moment, their eyes remained locked.
Then he walked toward her.
Every step felt strangely heavy.
When he stopped in front of her, Elara could see the conflict in his eyes.
She reached for his hand.
He pulled away.
Her heart sank.
"Kael?"
His voice came out cold.
"I reject you."
Elara stared at him.
She thought she had misheard.
"What?"
"I said I reject you."
The words echoed across the silent square.
The crowd stopped breathing.
Elara's lips parted, but no sound came out.
The bond between them suddenly tightened.
Then pain exploded through her chest.
She bent forward, clutching herself.
"Kael..."
He looked away.
"Please," she whispered. "Tell me what I've done."
Kael's expression hardened.
"You know what you've done."
"I don't."
"Don't lie to me."
Tears rolled down Elara's cheeks.
"I would never lie to you."
Before Kael could respond, Elder Magnus stepped forward.
The elderly councilman carried several sheets of parchment in his hands.
"Perhaps she should explain why these were found in her room."
Elara looked at the papers.
Her blood ran cold.
"What are those?"
"Patrol routes," Magnus answered.
She shook her head.
"I've never seen them."
"These documents contain information that was used during the rogue attack three nights ago."
Elara stared at him.
The rogue attack had killed five Silver Fang warriors.
She had spent the following morning helping treat the wounded.
"Why would I have those?"
Magnus's expression remained emotionless.
"Because you gave the information to the rogues."
A wave of whispers moved through the crowd.
Elara looked desperately at Kael.
"You don't believe this."
Kael said nothing.
"Kael, look at me."
He slowly raised his eyes.
"I didn't betray the pack."
Something flickered across his face.
Doubt.
Elara saw it.
For one brief second, hope returned.
Then Magnus spoke.
"We also found evidence that she had been communicating with outsiders."
Elara's stomach dropped.
"That's a lie."
Kael's face hardened again.
"You have nothing to prove."
"Then investigate!"
Her voice broke.
"Please. Just investigate before you condemn me."
The Alpha stared at her.
Elara searched his eyes for the man she had known all these years.
The boy who had once helped her climb an old apple tree.
The young warrior who had protected her from bullies when they were children.
The man she had secretly loved.
But the person standing before her now seemed like a stranger.
"I can't trust you," Kael said.
Those four words hurt more than the accusation.
Elara shook her head slowly.
"You don't trust me?"
"I'm sorry."
"No."
She stepped closer.
"You don't get to say you're sorry."
Her tears continued falling, but she refused to wipe them away.
"You haven't even asked me what happened."
Kael's jaw tightened.
"The council has made its decision."
Elara turned toward the elders.
"And that's it?"
Magnus nodded.
"You are no longer welcome in Silver Fang."
The words barely registered.
Then Kael spoke.
"Elara Ashwood, I strip you of your place within the pack and banish you beyond our borders."
Her legs nearly gave out.
She stared at him.
"You're banishing me?"
Kael looked away.
"Yes."
"And the mate bond?"
His eyes closed briefly.
"I reject that too."
The moment the words left his mouth, the bond shattered.
Elara screamed.
Agony tore through her body.
It felt as though something inside her had been ripped apart without mercy. She fell to her knees, gasping for breath while the world around her blurred.
Someone shouted for the High Priestess.
Nora tried to reach her, but two warriors stopped her.
"Elara!"
Elara lifted her head.
Through her tears, she saw Kael standing several feet away.
He was watching her.
For a moment, their eyes met.
She desperately wanted him to change his mind.
To run toward her.
To tell everyone that he had made a mistake.
He didn't.
Instead, he turned his back.
That was when something inside Elara finally broke.
Not her heart.
Something deeper.
The part of her that had spent years believing that love meant safety.
Two warriors grabbed her arms and pulled her to her feet.
"Let me go."
They dragged her through the crowd.
Whispers followed her.
"Traitor."
"She killed five warriors."
"She doesn't deserve to be Luna."
Nora was crying.
"Elara!"
Elara tried to reach for her, but the warriors continued pulling her away.
The pack gates opened.
Cold night air rushed across her face.
She looked back one final time.
The lights of Silver Fang glowed behind her.
Her home.
Her childhood.
Everything she had ever known.
Kael stood beneath the Moon Tree.
He didn't come after her.
The gates slammed shut.
Elara stood alone outside the territory.
For a long time, she didn't move.
Then she looked toward the dark forest ahead.
The Forbidden Forest.
Every wolf in Silver Fang had been warned never to enter it. Ancient creatures were said to live beneath its trees, and even experienced warriors avoided its borders.
But Elara had nowhere else to go.
She wiped the tears from her face.
She had lost her mate.
She had lost her home.
She had been branded a traitor.
Yet she was still alive.
And as long as she was alive, she refused to let them decide how her story ended.
Elara stepped into the forest.
The trees swallowed her almost immediately.
She didn't see the figure watching from the darkness.
A pair of crimson eyes followed her every movement.
The stranger remained hidden among the ancient trees, silent until Elara disappeared deeper into the forest.
Then he smiled.
"Interesting."
His voice was low and dangerously calm.
"The Moon Goddess has finally brought you to me."
And for the first time in centuries, the Devil Lycan King stepped out of the shadows.
