The Man Who Lived Two Different Lives (Part 2) Daniel woke up before the alarm rang. For a moment, he lay on the bed staring at the ceiling of the small room. The same cracked paint. The same weak fan turning slowly. Everything looked the same… But this morning was different. Today was the last day he would live like a poor man. He stood up quietly, folded the old blanket, and washed his face in the small bowl near the window. He looked at himself in the broken mirror. Unshaved beard. Old shirt. Tired eyes. Anyone who saw him would think he was a man who had failed in life. Daniel smiled slightly. “Perfect.” He wore his old shoes and left the apartment. Outside, the street was already noisy. People were rushing to work, buses were full, traders were shouting. Daniel walked like every other day. No one knew this man owned more money than everyone on the street combined. When he reached the warehouse, the workers were already there. One of them shouted when he saw him. “Hey Daniel! You didn’t run away after your girlfriend left you?” Another laughed. “I heard she found a rich man.” Someone else added, “Women don’t stay with poor men, my brother.” They all laughed loudly. Daniel just nodded and picked up a box. His boss came out of the office. “Daniel! You are late again.” “I’m sorry, sir.” “Sorry will not pay my bills. Carry those boxes to the truck now.” “Yes sir.” Daniel worked harder than everyone that morning. Not because he needed the money… But because he knew this was the last time. At lunch break, the workers sat together eating. Daniel sat alone with his bread and tea. One of the workers came to him. “So what will you do now that Clara left you?” Daniel looked at him calmly. “I told you yesterday… I’m traveling.” The man laughed. “Traveling where? Village?” Daniel shook his head. “No.” “Then where?” Daniel stood up slowly. “You will see.” They laughed again. “You think we care?” Daniel smiled. “I know you don’t.” He removed his work gloves and dropped them on the table. “I won’t be coming back tomorrow.” The boss heard him. “What do you mean?” “I quit.” The boss looked angry. “You quit? You think jobs grow on trees?” Daniel shook his head. “No sir. But I don’t need this one anymore.” Everyone started laughing. “Listen to him!” “He doesn’t need the job!” “Maybe he won lottery!” Daniel picked his small bag. “Goodbye.” Nobody followed him. Nobody believed him. To them, he was just another poor worker with big talk. Outside, Daniel stopped at the gate and looked back one last time. Two years. Two long years. Working like a normal man. Living like a normal man. Suffering like a normal man. All for one reason. To know the truth about people. He turned and walked away. A taxi stopped near the road. The driver lowered the window. “Where are you going?” Daniel opened the door. “Airport.” The driver looked at his clothes. “You sure?” Daniel smiled. “Yes.” The car started moving. As they drove through the city, Daniel looked outside quietly. He remembered everything. The first day he came to this city pretending to be poor. The day he rented the small apartment. The first day at the warehouse. The first time Clara laughed at his old shoes. Every moment was part of the test. He wanted to know… Who would respect him without money. Who would love him without power. Who would stay when he had nothing. Now he knew the answer. Nobody. The taxi stopped at the airport. The driver turned back. “That will be the fare.” Daniel gave him money. Real money. More than the fare. The driver looked surprised. “Sir… this is too much.” Daniel smiled. “Keep the change.” He carried his small bag and walked inside. People were everywhere. Families, businessmen, travelers. Daniel walked to the counter. The lady looked at his passport. Her expression changed immediately. She stood up. “Good morning, Mr. Daniel.” The man behind him looked surprised. Daniel nodded. “Good morning.” She smiled politely. “Your jet is ready, sir.” People around turned to look. “Jet?” Daniel didn’t react. “Thank you.” A staff member came quickly. “This way, sir.” They didn’t take him to the normal gate. They took him to a private entrance. Outside, a private jet was waiting. The pilot stood near the door. “Welcome back, Mr. Daniel.” Daniel handed him the bag. “Let’s go.” Inside the jet, everything was quiet and luxurious. Soft seats. Cold air. Fresh drinks. Daniel sat near the window. As the plane started moving, he looked down at the city. The same city where people laughed at him. The same city where his girlfriend left him. The same city where nobody respected him. He closed his eyes. “Test finished.” Hours later, the jet landed in London. When Daniel came down, three black cars were waiting. Men in suits stood in line. One of them stepped forward. “Welcome back, Sir.” Daniel nodded. “How is the company?” “Everything is ready. The board members are waiting for you.” Daniel looked at the city lights. “Good.” They opened the car door. Daniel entered slowly. As the car drove through the city, tall buildings passed by the window. The man in front spoke carefully. “We were worried, sir. Two years is a long time.” Daniel looked outside. “I needed the truth.” “Did you find it?” Daniel smiled slightly. “Yes.” “And?” Daniel’s face became serious. “No one stayed.” Silence filled the car. After a moment, Daniel said, “Take me to the office.” The driver nodded. “Yes, Mr. CEO.” The car stopped in front of a huge glass building. On the top was written: DANIEL GROUP INTERNATIONAL Workers were waiting at the entrance. As he stepped out, they all stood straight. “Welcome back, Sir!” Daniel walked inside calmly. The poor warehouse worker… Was the owner of everything. And tomorrow… His old life would see the truth. END OF PART 2
