Chapter 1:A Million dollar proposal
The hospital hallway tilted.
Elena Carter's phone trembled in her grip as the voice on the other end—cold, efficient, merciless—delivered the final blow: "$48,000. Due by Friday, Miss Carter. Or we stop your mother's treatment."
Three days. She had $112 in her account.
She slid down the wall, her scrubs catching on the rough hospital plaster. Two shifts at the diner. One at the grocery store. Still wouldn't be close. Her mom needed this surgery. Without it, she wouldn't make it past the summer.
That's when the shadow fell.
**ADRIAN**
Adrian Knight didn't usually pay attention to broken women on hospital floors. He paid attention to profit margins, shareholder meetings, and the three women trying to win his attention at tonight's charity gala—none of whom interested him.
But he'd overheard this one on the phone with his finance director.
*"$48,000. Due by Friday."*
Interesting.
She was young. Early twenties, maybe. Dark hair escaping a messy ponytail. Wearing scrubs with a hole in the knee. Everything about her screamed *desperate*, and desperation was Adrian's favorite negotiation tool.
He watched her for a moment—really looked at her. Red-rimmed eyes. Trembling hands. The kind of beautiful that didn't know it was beautiful. The kind that came from grief, not makeup.
"You look like you need money," he said.
She flinched. When she looked up, her eyes were the color of storm clouds. For a second—just a second—Adrian felt something crack in his chest. He ignored it.
"I'm fine," she whispered, but her voice shattered on the second word.
He handed her the black folder from his briefcase without sitting down. Power move. Let her look up at him. Let her feel the weight of what he was about to offer.
"I have a proposition."
**ELENA**
The man standing over her was expensive. Everything about him screamed *money*—the tailored suit that probably cost more than her car, the Rolex catching the fluorescent lights, the way he held himself like the world bent around him instead of the other way around.
She knew who he was. Everyone knew who Adrian Knight was.
The youngest billionaire in the city. Ruthless CEO. The man who'd destroyed three companies before his thirtieth birthday just because they got in his way. Her boss's boss's boss.
Heartless. That's what everyone called him.
"I'm Elena," she said stupidly, then looked down at the folder in her shaking hands.
Inside was a contract. She blinked, reading the header twice.
*Marriage Contract.*
"What is this?" Her voice cracked.
"An opportunity," Adrian said coldly. "I need a wife. For twelve months. You need $1,000,000. Seems like a mutually beneficial arrangement."
Elena's laugh came out hysterical. "You're insane."
"Read the terms."
She did, her eyes scanning the typed words like they might change:
*Duration: 12 months*
*Compensation: $1,000,000*
*Rule 1: No love.*
*Rule 2: Live together.*
*Rule 3: No other men.*
"Why?" she whispered. "Why me?"
For the first time, something flickered across Adrian's face. Something almost human. "Because you're desperate enough to say yes. And invisible enough that no one will ask questions."
The words should have stung. Instead, they felt like permission—like the universe was handing her exactly what she needed and she was insane enough to refuse it.
"I don't even know you."
"No," Adrian agreed. "But you have three days to decide. Your mother or your pride, Miss Carter."
He started to walk away.
"Wait—" The word tore out of her before she could stop it. "What's the catch? Why would you—a billionaire—marry a stranger?"
Adrian stopped. Without turning, he said, "I have an inheritance clause. I need to be married by next Friday to claim it. You need money. I'm offering both." He paused. "After twelve months, we divorce. You keep half a million. You disappear from my life."
"And if I can't follow the rules?"
Now he turned. And the look in his eyes—dark, dangerous, *hungry*—made her pulse spike in a way that had nothing to do with fear.
, her heart hammering against her ribs.
A million dollars.
Her mother's surgery. Her future. Everything she'd been desperately clawing toward since her father died.
All she had to do was marry a heartless billionaire for a year.
What could possibly go wrong?
